HONOLULU — University of Hawai’i men’s basketball coach Eran Ganot announced the addition of graduate transfer Matthue Cotton to the 2023-24 Rainbow Warriors roster. The former Yale guard will have one year of eligibility upon his arrival in Manoa this summer.

At 6-5, 200-pounds, Cotton brings size, athleticism and experience to the UH backcourt. He appeared in 77 games over the course of three years at Yale. During the 2021-22 season he was one of just four Bulldogs to play in all 31 games for a squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The New Jersey native finished second on the team with 44 three-pointers, while averaging 7.1 ppg, including a season-high 23 points versus UMass.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Matthue to our ‘ohana” Ganot said. “He brings great versatility with his ability to defend, get to the basket and spread the floor with his shooting. He comes from a winning program in Yale and is a great fit for us with his high character, work ethic, leadership and postseason experience. We look forward to getting to work with him this summer.”

Over the course of his career at Yale, the Bulldogs captured three regular-season Ivy League titles and made a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Cotton was sidelined during the 2022-23 season but still traveled to Honolulu with Yale when the Bulldogs captured the Outrigger Rainbow Classic last November.

Cotton, who was rated as one of the top 15 high school recruits out of New Jersey, will leave Yale with a degree in economics. He is the second Ivy League grad transfer in the last three seasons to join UH. Former Princeton Tiger Jerome Desroisers was all-Big West honorable mention as a Rainbow Warrior during the 2021-22 season.
