Guard from New Zealand signs with Warriors

Tom Beattie, a 6-foot-5 combo guard from New Zealand, has signed to play with the University of Hawai’i basketball team, the school announced on Monday.

Beattie will be a true freshman during the upcoming 2023-24 season, and will have four seasons of eligibility. He is the third recruit to officially sign with the Rainbow Warriors for this season.

Beattie is a 6-5, 200-pound combo guard who has shown exceptional promise at the high school, club and national levels. As a senior at Rosmini College he averaged 27.4 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals per game while leading his team to the prep championship game.

Beattie has also gained invaluable experience against older players, appearing in 24 games over the last two seasons for the Auckland Tuatara of the New Zealand National Basketball League. He has also been a member of the Junior Tall Blacks, representing the New Zealand national team at the U18 and U19 levels.

Just this month, the native of Auckland helped lead Harbour Basketball to the U20 national championship in Rangiora. Beattie led all scorers with 28 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the championship game.

“Tom is a highly-skilled guard who can play multiple positions because of his size and athletic ability,” Ganot said. “His competitive nature has seen him tasked with defending the best players throughout the New Zealand professional league at a young age. Tom’s tireless work ethic and leadership qualities will fit seamlessly into our program and we look forward to his arrival here.”

Just two others in UH program history have hailed from New Zealand: Marty Winter (1991-93) and Isaac Fotu (2012-14).

Bettie is the third player – and the first prep player – to sign with the Rainbow Warriors this offseason, joining Division I transfers Matthue Cotton (Yale) and Justin McKoy (North Carolina).
