Let the hype begin: Hawai’i vs. Long Beach State

A three-game winning streak, a shot against the first-place team, and a chance to watch a game in the Stan Sheriff Center for the first time in nearly three weeks have created quite the buzz around the Hawai’i basketball team this week.

Well, that and free tie-dye shirts.

The Warriors will host first-place Long Beach State on Thursday evening at the Sheriff Center. It will be Hawaii’s first home game since January 19, and the UH students – also known as the Manoa Maniacs – appear to be ready to cheer on the Warriors again.

More than 200 students showed up for “Warrior Tie-Dye” on the Manoa campus on Monday evening. They each got to create their own tie-dye design to wear to the game on Thursday, and some of them waited in line for nearly one hour to get a shirt.

Thursday’s game is being promoted as’60s Hippie Night, and fans are being encouraged to wear tie-dye shirts and Afro wigs.

Jamie Smith, who has emerged as the volunteer coordinator of the student section on game days, helped organize the Tie-Dye Day along with UH’s Campus Center Board Activities Council. He said he is aiming to get more than 650 students to attend Thursday’s game. The first 200 students will receive free Afro wigs.

This is Hawai’i’s first season in the Big West Conference, and Thursday’s game will be the most significant to date. The Warriors are 13-9 overall and in third place in the conference at 7-4 following their three straight road wins.

Long Beach State is 13-8 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The 49ers, who have won the last two Big West regular-season titles, defeated the Warriors, 76-72, in Long Beach, Calif., on January 12. The 49ers won that game by scoring four points in the final two seconds to break a 72-72 tie.

And below is a video from UH Film Productions promoting Thursday’s game:

  1. Keep on working to get better MBB team! Continue great effort. Have to be agressive on offense and defense, win the rebound and turnover battles and close out games to win.

    Should be a great game against the Beach! Hope there will be 7000+ at game Thursday night and Sat night.

  2. Also, very nice promotion. Tie dye shirts, retro!

  3. I love Davis! And the whole team…you guys rock : )

  4. COMPLETE HAIR EXTRAVAGANZA.

    >> 42 – FroTo;
    >> 32 – Short Cut;
    >> 13 – Skin Shine.

    Davis: With your experience, mental capability and long.. If you want to really shine and help the TEAM, you got to produce at least half of what “the King” has showing you! You just being here?

  5. Great video. Great promo. Jamie Smith comes up with some great promotions for the athletic department.

  6. I wish I was a student again – Davis is awesome!!!!

    Great job Jamie Smith!!!

  7. PS Michael’s washing turns out like his tie-dying

  8. Aloha, Big Guy:
    Just by your luck, magic, physical stature.. all of you be able to returned home as true Road Warriors. Great job!
    The desirable momentum is with you. If same kind of TEAM synergy exhilarated, the remaining BWC games are winnable!
    Meanwhile, a couple of shaky concerns need to be addressed for THE BETTER:
    >> Forcing a half-cocked trey with only 1-point advantage in the closing seconds instead of passing to a dedicated-shooter.
    >> After a travel whistled then, demonstrating the Ref’s wronged and, holding the “rock” with eyes inflamed toward that whistle, contemplating to target practice!?
    With your luck, the trigger malfunctioned (whew, my poor heart!).
    Your mentor grooming you for BWC POY.. Waiting for the best of stats to handover to his NBA contacts..
    GIVE IT YOUR BEST NOW; THERE’LL BE A LOT FOR YOU TO TAKE HOME!

  9. The videos cracked me up. Really fun stuff. It’s great to see the imaginative promos and the students getting behind the team.

  10. It is simply amazing what starts off as an idea can explode into something amazing! 200 students in line around the building to show their support of UH Men’s BBall!

    Kudos to Jamie Smith for pulling together one great idea after another! He is causing the entire student body to come together to support the team! Thursday nite is snowballing into hopefully the largest student body turn out! It is a great way to tell the team, you are HOME!

  11. I believe you guys do a better job on tape than on the court lol…..BIG GAME THURSDAY!!!
