Big week in the Big West for the Warriors

The only certainty about the Big West Conference regular season is that there will not be an undefeated champion. Other than that, the race is too close to call right now.

Each of the 11 teams in the BWC have at least one loss, thanks to UC Santa Barbara’s 73-65 road win at UC Irvine on Monday.

Four teams are now in the lead pack with one loss each: UC Riverside (6-1), Hawai’i (5-1), UC Irvine (5-1) and UC Santa Barbara (5-1). UC Davis (4-2) is right behind them.

The Rainbow Warriors, who started the week with a 58-51 home win over CSUN on Monday, are now on a road trip that will impact the top of the standings. Hawai’i will play at UC Irvine on Thursday (7:00 p.m. Pacific/5:00 p.m. Hawai’i), then at UC Riverside on Saturday (1:00 p.m. Pacific/11:00 a.m. Hawai’i). On Tuesday afternoon – less than 18 hours after the home victory over CSUN – the Warriors were on a flight to California.

“We’re not going to sit there and whine and complain,” Hawai’i head coach Eran Ganot said of playing three games during the week. “We’re going to flip the script and embrace the opportunity, because it is league play.”

The Warriors are 9-1 in their last 10 games, with the only loss coming on the road, at Cal State Fullerton, 79-70 in overtime.

More details about the upcoming UC Irvine game will be posted later.
