Warriors lose at buzzer

The Hawaii basketball team lost a heartbreaker in China, 81-80, to the Qingdao Eagles on Friday night (China time).

The Warriors trailed by as many as 10 points late in the fourth quarter, but cut the Eagles’ lead to 81-80 on a layup by Davis Rozitis with around 40 seconds remaining.

After a defensive stop, the Warriors had the game’s final possession. Shaquille Stokes drove from the wing to the free-throw line, but his attempt at the game winner rattled out.

Stokes led Hawaii with 23 points, including 19 in the first half. Hauns Brereton added 17 points, Davis Rozitis scored 13, and Joston Thomas 12.

Zane Johnson, the leading scorer from last season, sat out the game with a sprained ankle.

Qingdao is a professional team from the China Basketball Association.

Around 3,000 fans attended the game, and several hundreds of them gathered on the court after the game to take photographs with the Hawaii players and coaches.

Video highlights and more details will be posted later.

  1. Sounds like Stokes is doing really well

  2. To play an experience China team as close as they did, that’s pretty good. And, UH didn’t have all the starters on the court. Sounds like this team has lots of potential to get even better. 🙂

  3. sounds like they played well even though we’re not at full strength. can’t wait to see the vid. thanks!
man, i wish i made this trip. dang work. heh. maybe if they go again in 4 years.

  4. so how good are the two teams hawaii played? 70 in first then 80 in second game is good offense but i guess it doesn’t matter if the other team score more

  5. Sorry, I should have noted that all of the games on this tour are being played with a 24 second shot clock, so the games are played at a faster pace and thus the higher scores.

Still, though, the teams that Hawaii are playing are older, bigger and stronger. Plus the Warriors have a limited roster — they basically used a rotation of seven players in this game.

  6. where is the video of the game going to be posted

  7. Shaq Stokes looks like he’s gonna be a 4 year starter! Bows playing tough despite having a limited roster.

  8. I think they would be winning these games with Zane, Vander, Garrett, Gerry and Dillon.

  9. Josh: They’d probably have won both games if they just had Zane and Vander. At least the others are benefitting from the increased minutes on the court.
