Blakes commits to Warriors

The Hawaii basketball team may have secured a “sleeper” recruit for next season in guard Gerry Blakes (White, No. 23 – Layup at 3:08).

Blakes said he is committed to signing with the Warriors for the 2011-12 season. He is currently a senior at Morningside High in Southern California.

“I really related to Coach (Gib) Arnold, and he really made me feel like Hawaii would be the best place for me,” Blakes said.

Blakes, who is 6 feet 4 and 175 pounds, is primarily a point guard, but can also play on the wing. He had limited statistics as a junior last season at Leuzinger High due to an ankle injury. However, he still played a key role in the team’s run to a state championship.

Blakes had a strong summer season on the AAU circuit, and transferred to Morningside High for his senior year. Morningside is a larger school than Leuzinger, so he should face better competition.

ESPN.com described Blakes as “a relative unknown out west, but he is one of the better sleepers.”

Blakes said he was also being recruited by Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.
