Warriors pull away from Sharks for exhibition win, 90-70

Gibson Johnson scored 18 points and shot a perfect 7 for 7 from the field and 4 for 4 on free throws, and Mike Thomas added 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead the University of Hawai’i to a 90-70 exhibition win over Hawai’i Pacific on Wednesday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Leland Green added 13 points, Drew Buggs had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Sheriff Drammeh scored 10 points for the Rainbow Warriors.

The final result and statistics will not count toward the season. Hawai’i will open its regular season on November 10 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Hawai’i shot 52.2 percent from the field (35-67) and 93.3 percent from the free-throw line (14-15).

The Warriors led by as many as 12 points, and eventually took a 41-36 lead at halftime. They started the game with five returnees: Brocke Stepteau, Leland Green and Sheriff Drammeh at guards, and Thomas and Johnson at forwards.

Buggs replaced Stepteau to start the second half, and the Warriors increased their lead to 55-42 within the first five minutes after intermission. HPU got as close as 65-59, but Drammeh drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Warriors back in control.

Buggs and Leland Green hit 3-pointers and back-to-back possessions to increase the Hawai’i lead to 80-65 with 4:28 remaining. The Warriors then pulled away in the closing minutes, and all 14 players in uniform eventually saw action.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.
