Warriors hope to be at full force for Diamond Head

The University of Hawai’i basketball team is not necessarily asking for a Christmas miracle this week, but there are some items on the wish list it would like to get checked off.

Among the Warriors’ wishes are a healthy Negus Webster-Chan and final clearance for participation for Stefan Jankovic. The Warriors could end up getting both on Monday, which would lead to greater wishes later in the week – namely the championship of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.

The Warriors will face Nebraska at 8 p.m. on Monday, which is the first of three days in the eight-team tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center. Other first-round games on Monday are Ohio vs. George Washington (9:30 a.m.), DePaul vs. Colorado (11:30 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount vs. Wichita State (6 p.m.).

“They’re a very good ball club out of the Big Ten and they’re very physical,” UH acting head coach Benjy Taylor said of Nebraska. “They got good guard play and they got good size, athleticism.”

Hawai’i is 8-3; Nebraska, which opened the season in the Top 25 polls, is 6-3.

It should help the Warriors to have Webster-Chan back in the lineup after he missed the previous two games with a sprained right ankle. The 6-foot-7 sophomore is averaging 9.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, and ranks second on the team with 16 3-pointers.

“I’ve been through a lot of rehab with (trainer) Jay Goo, six-plus hours a day,” he said. “I think I’m fine right now.”

A bigger addition would be Jankovic, a 6-11 sophomore who is set to make an eagerly-awaited debut in a Hawai’i jersey. He transferred to UH from Missouri last December, and still needs to have his grades cleared by UH officials from the recently-completed semester before he can suit up.

“I’m eligible,” Jankovic said. “It’s just on administration … they just have to go through the paperwork and stuff, but Monday morning I should be good.”

Taylor said the addition of Jankovic will make the Warriors “a whole different team.”

“He will augment what we’re doing,” Taylor added. “We’re a pretty good ball club, so like I said, we don’t need rescuing, but he’s an awfully good player to add to the mix.”

Sophomore forward Aaron Valdes continues to lead the Warriors in both scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.5), and also leads the team with a .573 field goal percentage. Senior guard Garrett Nevels is next at 12.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, and junior point guard Roderick Bobbitt is contributing 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.

The Cornhuskers return all five starters from a team that played in the NCAA Tournament last season. They were ranked No. 21 in the Top 25 polls in the first week of the season, but dropped out after losses at Rhode Island, and home losses to Creighton and Incarnate Word.

The Huskers’ offense revolves primarily around two players – 6-6 junior guard Terran Petteway and 6-7 junior forward Shavon Shields.

Petteway, who is on the top 50 list for the Wooden Award, is averaging 19.8 points per game and has scored at least 20 points in six of the nine games. He was the Big Ten scoring champion last season with 18.1 points per game.

Shields is averaging 17.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and scored 35 in a victory over Omaha earlier this season.

“They’re good players,” Taylor said. “The numbers they’re putting up now are the same numbers they put up last year in the Big Ten towards the end of the year … they were a NCAA (Tournament) team last year and all those guys are back, so they’re used to making big shots and taking big shots.”

This year’s Diamond Head Classic field features just one ranked team – No. 11 Wichita State. The Shockers were a Final 4 team in 2013, and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation last season, when they finished with a 35-1 record.

The Shockers are the clear favorite in the field, but the other seven teams appear to be fairly even. Here is a capsule look at the seven teams, other than Hawai’i:

Just having fun fans.. love UH MBB hoops..
hope they can go 2-1 or better DHC, the 2-0 last two games of year at SSC, enter BWC play at 12-4, 13-3 or the least 11-5.. 4 of first 5 BWC games at SSC start Jan 2015.

Hey Maniacs, almost 2 1/2 weeks winter break , come out and support the Men’s Basketball team, and women too, see if Laura can get 1100 and men can get 6100 per game !!

    🙂

  2. These guys just seem like soooo much fun. I like Benji but I have to give Gib the credit for putting these guys together and starting that Ohana feel with beach workouts, neighbor island trip. How in the world does someone pick any place other than here?

  3. ROB T : you hit it on the Head.. a caller into Dickman’s post game show, after their win against Delaware St… reminded everyone, a nice woman, probably relative or close supporter of Gib.. She said.. Remember the success of this team, the 14 now.. Those are Gib’s recruits…since as HC he goes in, or has them here on visits.. the assistants do the work in the field. phone calls, going to games, writing reports. etc, And then Gib closes the deal, the sign LOI, non binding scholarship agreement or are invited as preferred walkons, at last count,

You know, I believe Isaac Fleming, Benjy contact and get.. Que.. just waiting, if Admin. gets Benjy and Que locked, in , say UH MBB at 16-6 going into first 4 games or so of BWC.. if Admin wants a quick fix, and keep this thing going.. sign Que and Benjy for next season, as HC and associate.. I mean it would not be too expensive, and keep the guys on board, and recruits would sign…sheesh !!

Love this Team ROB T.. even if they lose some games. The effort. and sticking with it.. absolutely FANTASTIC..!!

Negus and Janks.. another level, former SEC Mizzou tigers.. their addition. a complete UH MBB team will be , or can be scary good.. come on BWC.. going be a battle.. I like , NO LOVE UH MBB chances to grab that crown.. and NIT auto bid, then go for ncaa bid too.

Hey fans.. same old story.. older guy with two bad legs, and homebound.. I would if I could. be part of 5000-7000, key that UH upsets Nebraska,.. then Wichita St. .. then etc.. fans will come out.. bedroom community and so much to do holiday season in Honolulu.. however these 12 active players DESERVE at least 5000 in SSC every home game. and When Jamie Smith is back.. maybe 6500 and more !!

    Go Bows !!
    🙂

  4. Healthy and ready for 2015 BWC team:

    PG: Bobbitt…. Quincy
    SG: Nevels…..Fleming
    SF: Aaron ……Brandon Jawato
    Hybrid 3/4: Negus……Thomas
    PF/C: Jankovich….. Jovanovich..

There you have 2 deep at every spot from 1 through 5.. they continue to play great D and rebound as team.. get the steals.. and run smartly… Janks, NWC, Nevels.. Jawato start hitting consistent 3 ball.. Bobbitt, Q running team., Fleming slashing to rim and one, Nevels.. captain the ship..

Plus emergency when ready and needed, can help win games too.. Niko and Dyrbe Mr O and Mr D..

Go Bows.. Fans.. Almost ready .. the TERRIFIC TWELVE. ready for Battle
    Wow !!
    🙂

  5. My Boy, total respect for that May 2015 UH graduate to be !! J… Wato.. got to Bring it.. Benjy wants you aggressive, smart.. go to the rim.. rebound defend, not tentative,.. and no be shy.. gun that 3 ball, ,get that 7 for 7 three ball streak going.. will make this UH MBB team even more dangerous. having Janks, Nevels.. NWC and Jawato.. healthy Bobbitt., settled down Fleming in good shooting stance hitting some three ball treys.. and AV.. plus our secret weapon if he play D.. Dyrbe Enos.. come on Dyrbe. represent the 808, relax, hustle d up, and stroke some 27 foot 3 bombs..

    Go Bows !!
    🙂

  6. Just for now all our concentration should be on winning out this classic and doing a lot of damage in the big little west conference. With this team and if they play unselfish should go way into the playoffs rather than one and done dive they entered this conference. It’s Warrior Time. !! Show up at the game everybody we got some good games coming tomorrow night finally! It’s game time !

  7. The Diamond Head schedule makers didn’t do UH any favors. What happened to the days of the much more famous Rainbow Classic when UH would get an “easy” draw on opening night to make sure they at least had a chance at the title. Looking at the schedule for this week, UH has one of the toughest draws with Nebraska first and then possible Wichita State next. If they get past those two, looks like could be Colorado from the other side in the title?

The other side of the bracket looks weaker, so I wish UH would have been matched against Ohio for the first night. Winning the first game also gets UH into the prime time games and bigger crowds would come out so looks like Diamond Head officials weren’t thinking about that. With all the talk about budget deficits you would think UH administrators would really meet with Diamond Head officials to get a better draw next time.

Anyways, looks like these Warriors just have to go out and prove everyone wrong again! Three upsets in a row and run off with the trophy!

  8. I like our team, and i am interested in seeing how they play with Jankovic in the mix

  9. Haha! ChuckCheese:

I think only two upsets. When we beat Nebraska and Wichita State, we should definitely be the favorite team. We should run off with the trophy as the favs in the third game.

    Go Bows!!!!

  10. One game at a time, makes this group special.. even if playing with 5 guards against a big team, scrappy, defensive minded, athletic and quick.. Discipline.. Benjy is right.. they run some half court sets, to perfection.. even if they have the smaller team., they can beat these teams.. Hey, UH on Maui, remember you all?.. UH was the heavy underdog.. easy win for Pitt , an ncaa bound team.. UH plays disciplined, very well, follow scout, and they win.. Same thing. play within their scout.. and with NWC and Jankovich , if added to mix tomorrow.. same thing Discipline.. not helter skelter, along with great on ball defense, traps, doubles… help.. and shoot decently.. battle bigger guys on the board.. get 50/50 ball, the Tale of this Terrifc Twelve all season.. just battle.. fight.. and Play smart. together.. One goal. One win, one game at a time..

Gotta love the group.. till the final buzzer.. they will fight , Finish Strong.. and getting stronger.. gotta win at least 2.. or shoot for the Big One.. and why not? Battle for DHC trophy..

    Go Bows !

  12. warriorhaw, you are correct! I didn’t think about that, if UH upsets Nebraska and Wichita then definitely would be considered favorites in the final to beat Colorado or George Washington or whoever comes out of the weaker bracket. Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves and just take it one game at a time as all the coaches like to say.

  13. UH used to get a good tourney draw during the old Rainbow Classic because Riley himself seeded UH as #1 every year. Truly, he said so himself and none of the other teams minded.

Now ESPN I believe is in charge of running this tourney, and putting it together. So they do the seedings, and it’s out of UH’s hands.

Hope that UH progresses in this tourney. At least win the first round, of ANY tourney that you are in. Failed to do that in Florida…cannot fail to do that again.

  14. Speaking of looking ahead, should we as the paying fans be satisfied with what the Diamond Head Classic is giving us so far? I was already little bit disappointed with this year’s teams, but next year looks even worst. Oklahoma and New Mexico are good programs but if thats what is being hyped as the big name teams then the Diamond Head Classic needs to find a new schedule maker.

I wrote this before about how when this tournament first came out they were saying that ESPN would make this into a big time tournament like Maui. So far the two are not even close. I don’t expect the Diamond Head to be Maui because Maui is the best tournament in the country but would be nice to at least get one of the historic programs here every 5 years. I’m talking North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Louisville, those kind of teams.

If I count right next year is the 6th year of the tournament and still not one of those teams have been here, unless you count Arizona couple years ago. Maybe you can count Wichita State this year but I still rather see one of the teams that has NCAA championship history.

  15. When do we find out if janks is able to play?…..UH officials should be working on this first thing this morning

  16. Lol ^^^

Read your second sentence and think about it for a second.

  17. ^^^ Should be working on it 7:00 am…….wherever time zone NCAA is.

  18. hawaiifan09 and warriorhaw:

Correct..remember, that registrar, the state worker, I was one, on Hawaii civil servant time, Hawaiian time.. Hope they kokua, don’t take the day off or week off. Help Jankovich, all they have to do is call ncaa or fax his grades, get it marked and approved.. then Janks is good to play tonite.. That is the least they can do.. Stefan since last Jan transfer, he has done alright and compliant.. ncaa says he is good to go.. just have to follow protocol.. By the time, I am finishing typing this comment.. about HST 940am.. pretty much that compliance/admin person, should be finalizing grades with ncaa in mainland by now.. Just hope they don’t go on Hawaii state employee time, ha, ha.. Not really a joke.. I never did that.,..always did honest day’s work..So Hope they help Janks out… not hard thing to do … and NCAA offices are open, they are not on holiday.. perhaps, about 4 hours ahead of us, so currently 142 pm CST?

Hope Janks is ready and eligible by tonite.. tomorrow at the latest..

  19. I like our chances in this tournament. Although they all know that we knocked off Pitt we still haven’t gotten the respect this team deserves. Even the announcers will try to downplay Hawaii at the beginning of the game. This tournament will be a great showcase for the team and particularly Roderick Bobbitt. Of all the players he is the guy who has elevated everyone’s game by his point play. Watch for the announcers to start scrambling for notes when it becomes apparent that this guy is the real deal. Confidence starts with the point. Hope to see you there!

  20. Per UH academic calendar (http://manoa.hawaii.edu/records/calendar/fall_2014.html), tomorrow is the deadline for instructors and professors to input grades. Therefore, there’s a possibility that Janks won’t play tonight. But hopefully UH basketball staff have been communicating with Jank’s teachers to ensure his grades have already been submitted. Most final exams and projects were due last Thursday, so there’s really no excuse for Jank’s academic standing not to have been updated this morning.

  21. Per tweet from Brian McInnis (Advertiser sports reporter) at 12 noon today:

“Have been told by UH spokesman that as of noon Stefan Jankovic has NOT yet been cleared to play by UH for Nebraska.”

  22. WHAT TO DO ABOUT UH ATHLETICS?

Gov. Ige, “I just got into office and it is too low profile of an issue to get involved in right now.”

Hawaii Legislature, “We already have our cronies serving on the Board of Regents…it is their problem, not ours!”

Board of Rejects, “We only have to get through another 6 more months to fulfill our term. Why rock the boat now?”

Board Member, Jeff Portnoy, “Hey, I already helped get rid of Gib and tried to get Riley back, but who knew the 73 year old would have a health issue. I have nothing more to say, I have a radio show to do.”

President David Lassner, “Sssshhh…I don’t want to get involved in this.”

Chancellor Bley- Vroman, “Let’s see, first we get rid of Gib. Ck. Then we make Ben resign. Ck. Then we renew Norm’s contract. Ck. Then we take 6 months to search for a new AD. Ck. Then we prolong the announcement of a new men’s head coach for as long as we can. Ck. Then we delay the registrar from getting clearance for Jankovic. Ck. Now, if we can only get Dave Shoji to retire this year…everything would be in place to keep that Damn Athletic Department from getting that 1% of our Academic Budget!!!!”

AD Ben Jay, “Don’t ask me, I am a Lame Duck, besides I had zero input on decisions anyway!”

UH Registrar- “I want to thank the Chancellor for this gift certificate today…got to go, only 3 more days until Christmas…besides the NCAA office closed at noon our time!”

Prospective UH Recruits watching the DHC, “Damn, Hawaii looks like a great place to go to school!”

Prospective UH Recruits’ Parents, “Yeah, but we don’t know who will be the Coach next season!1”

UH RAINBOW WARRIORS, “LET’S KICK SOME CORNHUSKER ASS!!!!!”

  23. BACKBEAT:

Ben Jay, made valid points, even Stan Sheriff, June Jones, the vestment to be big time, or even competitive level for NCAA DI sports.. Academically, with grants, and excellent schools, or research, world leaders, law and medicine.. And President of UH, and interim, must be the INTERIM part. Athletics so vital and part of UH , the front porch, asking for money from legislature, for Title IX etc.. and travel subsidies..

BACKBEAT, you must be ON All the Forums and Editorial page, You make too much sense.
For Now, the UH MBB program, the shining light for something postitive , love the WBB , however the driving engine that can draw 5000-7000 paid tickets, and hopefully as much in the SSC? UH MBB team effort and winning ball games, excitingly..

The Jankovic thing.. it boggles the mind.. must be why he told BM yesterday he was 99.9% certain UH would have him eligible by tonite.. with NCAA offices closed, For Holidays? What with no letter yet? Too much , same old…

However, BACKBEAT, Eagle, servante , warriorhaw, jjay, BigFan, Palolowarrior, Josh, clyde, etc, whomever can go, and Today’s early games good , several thousand turnout.. so Interest in MBB with a good field.. is there.. UH should Have, I will take a guess, maybe 6500 paid tickets, with hopefully 6000+ in attendance.. would be a shame if not at least 6000 in the house.. This Team Deserves it !!

Go Bows ! Warriors Whack the Huskers !!
The HC, at a small cost, plus associate and already on board staff, with Jamie Smith hopefully added very soon, at small cost 2 year package, lock in recruits, and assure players and families, This MBB program is stable.. Is There..Chancellor.. and JP and BOR..just hire the current crew.. what is the problem?

  24. And Chuck Cheese , Horssse, akuhead2, from across the sea.. enjoy tonite’s game.

And I know from time to time Tonganator checks the forum.
Hope the Fotu ohana is doing well.. and we all cheer on the Rainbow Warriors.. Go the Mighty Warriors !!
Don’t know if you have ESPNU… however. it will be on live HST about 800pm at SSC.

Shout out to your family , and take care.. .

  25. well , really feel for Jankovich.. maybe UH put in the paper work, faxed to NCAA and No response.. do it on Their time… man, it is messing with a guy, who did all the heavy lifiting, compliant, waited out the RS year, got B’s on his finals.. .. Would be sad if Janks were not eligible till Christmas day, however, hoping If Not tonite. by tomorrow at the least, lest it FALLS on UH for not getting out his grades to NCAA on time? Who knows…. UH small ball again, however WITH NWC.. so UH will have that extra 3 ball shooter and facilitator, very smart BB IQ player, a difference maker, and Bobbitt,
Fleming, Valdes, Thomas, Jovanovich, Q, Nevels and company just have monster games..

    Free Stefan Jankovich !!

Go Bows.. Another trial.. This Team is Ready for Anything Now.. just keep fighting, finish strong and win for Hawaii , your ohana, and Janks.. !!

  26. Stefan Jankovich just told he’s good to go for tonight against Nebraska according to Brian McInnis

  27. Per Brian McInnis (twitter), Jankovic has been told he’s cleared to play tonight. Woohoo! Warriors were 5pt underdogs this morn, I wonder which way the line will go. The “upset” seems very likely, but at this point I’ll just be happy if UH keeps it close. Should be a good game! Let’s GO BOWS!!

  28. Everyone got the same tweet from McInnis!

Here we go! Let loose the KRAKAN!

  29. Lee and IsaacM, welcome to the UH MBB train bound for glory through thick and thin, all the crud thrown at them, welcome fellow great fans!!
    Cheeeehoooooooo !!

Welcome back to NCAA DI ball, Finally NCAA, thankyou, and UH admin, right on.. now get this HC staff locked in for 2 years.. UH for 2 or 3 years out will be good. and getting better.

Jankovich, finally with Partner, childhood bud, and Toronto to Virgina Prep, to Mizzou and Paradise, ready to Rock..
Stay Disciplined though Janks.. take time, relax and work with team, let shot come to you, and NWC too.. the guys even without NWC and Janks have been playing really well..However, we got to get MY Man Jawato Wato, J on board too.. Jawato, start shooting the rock and hitting 7 for 7 trifecta land.. and The Calvary Eagle, and Back beat, chuck, etc, Tavs, Warriorhaw,.. has finally arrived
Go Bows.. Warriors.. just keep on playing great D and be efficient on O.. go get the Huskers.. they are bangers, big, athletic, two great scorers. and a lot of attitude, they ARE BIG TEN.. and UH small kine BWC.. however.. no matter the size, UH the heart and effort.. will bring home a victory and hopefully a DHC championship.. win or lose, the effort and seeing Jankovich back home on the court Finally as a Rainbow Warrior…Awesome !!

And he was the subject of a paper error? come on.. ! Get it done UH.. take care the MBB program the current coaches, families, fans and the athletes.

Go Bows .. come on fans 7000 tickets sold and at least 6000 in the house !! rock on !~
    🙂
Imagine how Jankovich feels? and NWC and team, and Benjy.. Now we see the complete Terrific Twelve ready to rock the SSC and the BWC for the DHC crown..!!

  30. njacinto.. after a couple of years, and especially this one, I thought warriorhaw, servante…, myself and one or two more, were the rabid, faithful no matter what UH MBB fans, UH MBB and a few , a handful of fans against the world, the ncaa question? what happen? to that.. the exodus and termination.
I am so happy, other fans are coming out on this Forum to support the UH MBB program, HC and staff and the guys!!
More fans.. if not commenting ,that is okay, if you can, with a friend or your family. GO TO THE SSC and rock on , support the team , would be a shame if only 4000 went to game, should have 7400, however work night, however, schools, majority on winter break, plus,.Manoa Maniacs, if can afford the 10 dollars with ID.. come on down to game. ESPNU, national exposure

Join the MBB train bound for March Madness Glory.. or At least get 19 wins this year, so UH will have to retain team and coaches.. !!

    Go Bows !!
njacinto.. ready to listen and watch you fans from my chair bound, rocking and rolling on the tube…back in the day, at Klum, Bloch Arena, Blaisdell, we were there.. go Bows !!!
    🙂

Social media yeah !! Go Janks Go ,.. the Serbian Trio, Niko, Stef an Stef, or Stef x 2, Stef J. 2.0 !!

  31. IsaacM: odds makers before Jankovich’s eligibility and even with NWC on board, had UH at 5 point underdogs? At SSC, where the guys have played just 6 SSC home games.. I would call that a wash.. virtually anybody’s ball game, if it were 12 points, well that might be superiority..

However, with Healthy NWC and that special connection, though I bet Benjy will bring Jankovich off the bench.. since that first 8 guys with NWC.. healthy, have played really well without him for first 11 games. however. if Janks hits a couple of threes, a couple rebounds and blocked shots, steals.. or drives to the rim and flushes.. the WOW factor.. You are right..

Nebraska, probably , NO after a year, and Janks not playing too much at Mizzou, his freshman year, very sure not much video on him, except from HS/prep rank Youtube hilites.. Janks great skillset ,. like a 2 or 3 for a 6’11” guy.. beautiful stroke.. if he can knock down a couple early… SSC will go wild..
I like, NOW with NWC and Janks, chances to win the game.. At least take 2 out of 3 in DHC. and who knows. win the Championship, with all of your, hopefully 6000+ in attendance that can go.
Go Bows.. Husk the Huskers.. AC led team beat Tyrone Lue’s Nebraska team in NIT, ? I know Standhardinger will be happy if UH beats Nebraska.. he will go Boooooom !! all the way from Pro league in Germany..!! Sehr Guht !! very Good !

  32. From news article:

“He told a UH spokesman that he’s been cleared by the UH compliance office.”

Funny how the UH spokesman has to learn from Janks about it ?

  33. islandman:
Really makes you wonder..? Bury gib, akana, fotu, sammis gone , then janjovich has to work hard to make sure he eligible?
    Who running UH anyways?
    Just Go Bows !!
Despite craziness, have good season, do well in school, in community and on court..
no worry about other entity trying to bring you guys down
