Only on Moloka’i …

AkanaMolokai

The weekend trip to Moloka’i was unique in many ways for the Hawai’i basketball team. The team’s pre-game meal was evidence enough.

A few hours before the Warriors defeated Chaminade, 104-93, they fueled up with a meal in an “only on Moloka’i” setting. Due to a lack of conference rooms and restaurants near the team hotel, they set up tables and chairs on a beach-front lawn and catered food.

“Pre-game meal on the beach – the ocean and the seaweed is right here, you can smell it,” assistant coach Brandyn Akana said. “We’re getting a great meal and the guys are really enjoying it.”

Akana, born and raised on the Friendly Island, served as the coordinator for the trip, and his contacts were put to good use. The food – which included spaghetti, grilled chicken, salad and Moloka’i bread – was catered through a business owned by one of Akana’s former classmates from Moloka’i High School.

His friends at the Hotel Moloka’i set up the tables and chairs under a large canopy, and it also served as the team’s meeting area for film sessions.

Thanks Molokai residents on a beautiful warm welcome for our boys

  4. Thank you Dayton and WI for wonderful video and report! We also thank Gib and staff for providing players with very unique Hawaii experience, not only on Oahu, but other islands as well. This group of young athletes will remember these islands for the rest of their lives. Wow, a lot of we locals, never had a chance to see some of these islands the way these young men are, great job UH coaches, staff, and WI!!

…and i can easily say that my cousins (including Minister Lance), uncles, aunties, Grandma on Moloka’i AND ALL their friends (Everyone i ever met) were really Good People…The Island even helped Create TWO SAINTS !

(I have given Santa some Tim Tams to give to you but I believe he has alot of requets this year for Tim Tams!!).

    GO WARRIORS

  10. Aussie Mum:

According to Eagle’s post about start of Call The Coach with Gib. I believe it is , if you Google it, ESPN 1420 KKEA radio on internet.. it is a live free stream of radio broadcast, just in case you want to listen in. That is how some of us listen to radio broadcasts, via online stream.

Just a thought,..and I am sure Michael is having a great time. hey better than a lot of us locals, who have visited maybe one or two islands in our lifetime here. Michael and team get to visit very special places!!

P.S. didn’t want to leave out any parent who are following their son’s journey in Hawaii from around the globe, also kudos, and thanks to Fotu Ohana(family ) following in NZ, in fact all families no following online from across USA and world wide. WI…a real blessing, thanks Dayton and staff and wonderful sponsors..this is the best sport coverage site for UH of any athletic program at the University hands down!!

  12. You certainly would not be the First Family, Friends or Fans to Listen In OR Better, Call the Show — Thatʻs Part of What itʻs for…Bobby Curran does a very good job of having many good questions for the coach, including (often) questions that he gets queried on during his daily a.m. radio sports show…

Although i would think that since the coaches have “sat in your living rooms” and are entrusted with your sons, youʻd have a Direct Line to The Coaches…

IF anyone wants to call in, the phone number is normally (808) 296-1420 .. during the show theyʻll also probably provide another toll-free (at least Hawʻn Islands) number…

Thatʻs ESPN Radio AM 1420 Honolulu, 6-7 pm HST Wednesdays (12/19 Start) — PH (808) 296-1420
(i often listen via Internet in Poor Reception areas…)

Let the phone answerer know itʻs Long Distance and they “ought to” provide priority on-air…

  13. Eagle: I think a call in, if ESPN 1420 KKEA, had a toll free number for player’s families, from Croatia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Cali, Chicago, Memphis, Angola, Latvia, Washington State , and Honolulu , would be awesome!

Imagine, hearing Ozi and Aussie Mum’s voice for first time…that would be hilite of the show , for many posters to this forum, those good mom’s truly have a vested interest in their sons careers here..Thank you again for sharing a part of your family with the UH MBB team!

And Mahalo(thankyou very much)plenty , to Aussie Mum, Ozi Mum and Tonganator for very concise, and excellent posts and comments..has to be the athletic background, in hoops for all those families..you all know your Basketball!! Thanks again!!

  14. Good stuff. What an experience for these guys. Only in Hawaii……Molokai.
The guys will never forget this past weekend.
