Warriors are eager to get to Vegas

A lot of people in Hawaii can relate to what the University of Hawai’i basketball team is going through this week. A trip to Las Vegas can’t come soon enough.

The Warriors continue to take advantage of their 10-day break between games by preparing for their first road trip of the season. They are scheduled to depart Honolulu on Thursday night for Las Vegas. The non-conference game at UNLV is scheduled for Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. Hawai’i time).

“I’m real excited, this is what college basketball is about,” senior forward Hauns Brereton said.

The Runnin’ Rebels are ranked No. 20 in this week’s USA Today Coaches Poll (No. 24 in the Associated Press). The last ranked opponent that Hawai’i faced was … UNLV last season. The Rebels were ranked No. 19 last December 31, when they beat the Warriors, 74-69, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Two of the key Rebels from that game – guard Anthony Marshall and forward Mike Moser – are still starters for UNLV. Mashall (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Moser (15 points, 12 rebounds) each posted double-doubles in last year’s game.

Hawai’i center Vander Joaquim had 15 points and six rebounds in that game last season.

This year’s game will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center, where the Rebels are averaging more than 16,000 fans per home game this season. It will undoubtedly be the largest crowd the Warriors play in front of this season.

“It’s going to take great effort,” junior guard Brandon Spearman said. “Everybody is going to have to bring their all and pretty much just play hard.”

Hawai’i, which last played in a 71-66 victory over North Dakota on November 20, is 4-1. UNLV is 3-1, and scheduled to play Big West Conference member UC Irvine on Wednesday evening.

know Gib and staff and you athletes want to settle for nothing more than a huge road victory over a 20th ranked team…there will be a lot of Hawaii fans near your bench cheering you on..Go get em Warriors..Get that signature victory…Have much success..hope you guys stay healthy..

  3. Well said Ozi Mum…Good luck Warriors!..

  4. jeff said anthony bennett might be out with a injury which is good for hawaii but i want to see how good the best rated pf in the 2012 class is

  5. ISAAC FOTU Can Show Them How the Best Power Forward in the Class of 2012 SHOULD Have Been Rated…

AND OZI (“When” He Starts Firing on More Cylinders) Can Show them they ought to Get Off Their Butts and Figure Out How to Rate Foreign Forwards as well….

In The Mean Time, GIB & Staff Can SCOOP The Rewards…

  6. You want to beat the other team at it’s best, but if not, the game will go on as scheduled. Too bad. Nobody on Vegas will feel sorry for Tavita or Jawato if they are sick. You think The Ravens and the Browns were sad to see Roethlisberger not plainf? No way, Jose! That’s the breaks.

  7. Sorry, typo. Meant playing.

  8. Diamond Head Classic (Dec 22 – 25) First Round UH Opponent University of Miami (4-1) handling #13 Michigan State really well … Michigan State 59 Miami 67 ending MSU’s five game winning streak…
At least for tonight, Miami Hurricanes of the ACC look like a very good defensive team also with good, controlled fast breaks, out-running the usually high-flying MSU Spartans…6-10, 284 !! lb. Reggie Johnson (he might be Bigger) is A Load … Toughest BIG Man in ACC; Miami with FIVE 6-10 or taller players Will Challenge Hawai’i’s Front Line….

UH schedule NOT Looking weak to me…

    FIRST, Next, Sweep UNLV !!

  9. National TV Tonight:

ILLINOIS Still Undefeated (Grrrrr!) Geogia Tech

  10. Check the fro on #23 UCI. Mean.

  11. Sorry, unfinished post. UC Irvine play UNLV right now. 22-30 Rebels.

  12. #23 with the Fro is Michael Wilder. He is their top returning player. All-conference BW honorable mention last season. Too bad the Fro hasn’t caught on in Irvine like it is in Hawaii. It should be an interesting second half for Irvine and UNLV. Both teams aren’t shooting well from beyond the arc thus far.

  13. Noted on Oceanic Cable that Saturday’s game is on TWC channel 400 or HD 1400 at 2:00pm Hawaii Time.

  14. I got my tickets… should be a great game. I think they are expecting 17,000-18,000 in attendance (19k capacity).

After watching UNLV for a couple games, they have a lot of issues to work out… Poor help defense, poor shot selection, and sloppy turnovers have slowed the Runnin Rebels a little this season. They have a ton of talent, but I heard the Vegas radio people mentioning that their top tier freshman recruits are still raw defensively (5 star & 4 star players don’t play a ton of defense in HS or AAU), their effort has been questioned, and the team chemistry doesn’t seem real strong yet.

UNLV is hammering Cal Irvine (Big West team) right now….

Hopefully they don’t figure out all their issues by Saturday. Hawaii is a very live underdog this Saturday.

BTW, UNLV tickets ain’t cheap!!! I paid $45 + fees for Plaza level (lower bowl). I think the 1st 10 rows are $120 + fees per seat if you can find them.

  15. But UNLV defeats UCI 85 – 57 (28 pt margin)

Illinois 75 Georgia Tech 62 (Illini Still Undefeated)

    and earlier Miami defeated # 13 Mich St. 67 – 59

    UH Fans !

    ENJOY UNLV Game !

  16. Warriors, re: Ozi mum – ditto from me.

  17. Aussie and Ozi Mums: Fantastic to know you are following your sons BB team, and you are part of a global family (ohana) and growing of Rainbow Warrior Men’s Basketball…!

We are just so happy that Gib and staff and the great 16 young student athletes they have on team come from very good families..Welcome aboard, hopefully this is a great season for Michael, Ozi and the whole UH MBB team

    Go Warriors!!

  18. Hopefully the Rebels will still have some defenisve issues and we can capitalize on it, Make your free throws Warriors . Put any of the sick players in the same room together. Gib, have the trainer bring some Tamiflu on the trip in case one of the others starts feeling ill. The rest of you players and coaches get your flu shots now!

  19. Stay healthy guys. And, bring your A game in Vegas. UNLV looks pretty good.
    GO WARRIORS!!!
