Warriors prevail in late-night ESPN game

In the midnight hour, the crowd screamed “More! More! More!”

And the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team delivered in a big way, blitzing past Cal State Northridge, 86-67, for a rousing season-opening victory at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The victory came after an 11 p.m. tipoff before a late-night party crowd of 5,216 and a national TV audience on ESPN.

After taking a tenuous 37-34 lead into the locker room, the Warriors burst out of the gates with a stunning 18-6 run to open the second half and kept the Matadors (0-2) at bay the rest of the night.

Senior guard Zane Johnson led UH with 24 points — including six 3-pointers – sophomore forward Trevor Wiseman added 19 points and 16 rebounds, and freshman point guard Shaquille Stokes finished an impressive debut with 14 points, five assists and two rebounds.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. Fantastic! Way to go warriors. Can’t wait to see the replay on ESPN3. Hope they’re ready for Pangos.

  2. Wiseman was awesome last night/this morning.. He seemed to be everywhere.. Grabbing rebounds, leading the break.. Zane was money all game long, but I would say game ball goes to Trev..

  3. Way to go Warriors! And way to go Wiseman!

  4. Wiseman is the ex-factor on the team. He’s 6’7″ and runs and handles the ball like a point forward. He was doing that stuff in high school too. He’s always hustling, going for the ball, and getting garbage points. He’s a pest. I call him “chicken man”. He’s everywhere, he’s everywhere!!!!!!

I think he’s got a whole lot of confidence in his game now and that’s good for the team. With his energy and the intensity of Garret Jefferson I think UH’s defense will be very good on the perimeter. Also, I thought Bobby Miles looks to be very much improved. I’m waiting for Hauns Brereton to bust out. I think he just needs to relax, he seems to be pressing a little bit.

  5. Trev,
    that’s the way, brah!
“he got another one.. he got another one!” was all I hearing the guys amazed behind me.
rebounded, run all the way and, scored – paid for my eTicket.
    go show the Canadians?
TEAM, we hungry for more and more+.
