Thomas, Coleman show hops; Johnson range
Instead of an intrasquad scrimmage, the Hawaii basketball team played 15 minutes of exhibition hoops with some local celebrities at the ‘Ohana Hoopfest on Oct. 15 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
“We were out there, just having fun,” said forward Joston Thomas, who threw down several dunks during the exhibition. “We tried to get everybody involved, give the fans a show.”
Among the celebrity participants were the comedy duo “Da Braddahs,” surfing champion Sunny Garcia, former UH and NFL receiver Ashley Lelie, Taylor Wily from the Hawaii Five-O cast, and members of Dog the Bounty Hunter’s team (although Dog and his wife Beth were not able to attend).
The participants were split into two squads, so each team had a blend of players and celebrities.
“Sunny Garcia, I’m a fan of his,” senior point guard Hiram Thompson said. “It was pretty cool to see him, talk with him.”
Perhaps fittingly, the exhibition ended in a 35-35 tie after Zane Johnson drained a 30-foot 3-pointer at the final horn.

Fun event. It was simple, well-paced and entertaining. The camaraderie was palpable, something that has been absent from that floor for a while.
Checked the website and read the comments. Keep it up. Good job!
