Checking in on the Big West Conference

There are 10 weeks of regular-season games this season in Big West Conference men’s basketball. Two weeks have been completed so far, which means there is still a long way to go.

However, there have been a few noteworthy developments. Last week, only two teams (Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine) went 2-0 in Big West Conference games, creating a shakeup in the standings after Week 2 of the regular season.

• UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara (which went 1-0 last week) are now the only undefeated teams atop the standings. Both are 3-0.

• CSUF, Hawai’i and UC Riverside are right behind at 3-1. CSUF earned two crucial wins last week over Hawai’i and UCR.

• At the opposite end of the standings, CSUN went 0-2 last week and remains the only winless team in the BWC at 0-4.

Expect more shakeups over the next two weeks. New to BWC scheduling this year are conference games scheduled for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on January 16. It makes for a busy two weeks for some teams.

CSUN, for example, will play five games in 11 days, against five of the top six teams in the standings: vs. UC Davis on Jan. 11, vs. UC Irvine on Jan. 14, at Hawai’i on Jan. 16, at UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 19, vs. Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 21.

Hawai’i catches a break on the first day of this new scheduling (no game on Jan. 11) and will play four games over the next two weeks: vs. Long Beach State on Jan. 14, vs. CSUN on Jan. 16, at UC Irvine on Jan. 19, at UC Riverside on Jan. 21.

Guards Lead the Scoring

To describe the BWC as a guard-dominated league would be accurate, based on current statistical evidence. The top 14 individual scorers in the BWC are guards.

Currently at the top of the list is Zyon Pullin of UC Riverside at 19.6 points per game. Close behind him are Bryce Pope of UC San Diego at 19.0, and Elijah Pepper of UC Davis at 18.7.

Hawai’i junior guard Noel Coleman is 12th with 13.9 points per game.

The first non-guard to show up among the statistical leaders is UC Santa Barbara forward Miles Norris, who is ranked 15th in BWC scoring at 12.9 points per game.
