Warriors are now tied for first place in Big West

Without playing a game, the University of Hawai’i basketball team moved to the top of the Big West Conference standings on Wednesday night.

Long Beach State’s 63-56 upset win over UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton’s 78-74 upset win at UC Davis allowed the Rainbow Warriors to move into a tie for first place.

Hawai’i and UC Irvine are both 3-1. The Anteaters entered the game at Long Beach State as 10-point favorites, but the 49ers opened the second half with a 10-0 run to take control of the game.

UCI entered the game ranked among the national leaders in rebounding margin, but Long Beach out-rebounded the Anteaters 39-38.

The Anteaters defeated Hawai’i on January 11 at Irvine, so they technically own the tiebreaker for first place, for now.

In any case, it means that the Warriors’ next game will have first-place implications on the line. Hawai’i, which is 12-6 overall, will host UC Davis (8-12, 2-2) on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UCD could have made it a three-way tie for first with a home win on Wednesday, but Cal State Fullerton had other plans. The Titans got 21 points from Brandon Kamga, including 11-of-12 shooting on free throws, to hang on for the upset.
