CSUN speeds past Warriors, 77-71

Tavrion Dawson and Michael Warren each scored 22 points tonight as visiting Cal State Northridge sped past slumping Hawai’i, 77-71, in Big West Conference men’s basketball action.

Terrell Gomez contributed 16 points for the Matadors, who improved to 6-19 overall and 3-8 in the Big West. Drew Buggs scored 17 points and Mike Thomas added 14 points for the Warriors, who dropped their fifth straight game in falling to 13-10, 4-6.

UH led 16-9 in the early going, but Gomez capped a 12-5 run with a 3-pointer to tie it at 21-21 with 8:38 remaining in the first half. Warren later gave CSUN the lead for good on a jumper with 3:18 left, igniting a 9-0 run culminating in Jalon Pipkins’ layup on a baseline drive which put the Matadors ahead, 37-29, with 1:07 remaining.

Jack Purchase hit a jumper from the right elbow 20 seconds later to close it to 37-31, which is how it stood at halftime.

The Warriors closed it to 42-39 after Gibson Johnson’s free throw five minutes into the second half, but that is as close as they would get as CSUN eventually stretched the lead to 72-56 after Pipkins’ reverse layup with 3:18 left.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. 5 game losing streak…3 at home…? Csun you know theus has talent..Riverside decimated team..wins here..warriors have to fight to make bwc tournament. Ganot had to recruit that first year 28 win NCAA first win type of talent..from guards to bigs.. recruits.. athleticism..good coaching equals success…
hope..team wins bwc tournament ..NCAA bound..see how guys respond
I guess just stay positive guys!..

  2. Staying real positive. Eran nice man. Love his guidance of first year team. His disciplined offense and defensive schemes. Other BigWest teams seemed to be peaking. However Team I think can go 4-2 the last 6 games. Enter bwc tournament 8-8 . And..can win it all. Team stay positive. Eran look for good talent to replace gibson and Mike. Plus athletic guys.
    Go warriors bows!!
