Warriors look to ride momentum on the road

The University of Hawai’i basketball team created a little bit of separation for itself from the bottom of the Big West Conference, but it will need to maintain momentum on the road this week.

The Warriors, who went 3-2 on the first five-game conference homestand in program history, departed Honolulu on Tuesday for a two-game road trip in California this week. They will play at UC Riverside on Thursday, then at CSUN on Saturday.

Thursday’s game will be available via internet broadcast on www.espn3.com, starting at 6:00 p.m. (Hawai’i time). Saturday’s game will be televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket (Oceanic channels 228 and 1228), starting at 5:30 p.m. (Hawai’i time).

Hawai’i is 9-11 overall and tied for sixth place in the Big West at 3-4.

The Warriors faced both UCR and CSUN during the recent homestand. They lost to UCR, 70-64, on January 25, and beat CSUN, 80-77, on January 18.

This is Hawai’i’s second road trip of this season, and the Warriors are seeking their first road win.

One player who would like personal redemption on the road is senior forward Noah Allen. In Hawai’i’s first two road games, he scored a total of two points on 0-for-8 shooting from the field and 2 for 2 on free throws.

However, in the five home games that followed the road trip, Allen averaged 24.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

The top of the Big West standings got a bit of a shakeup last week, as UC Davis took over first place via a 74-65 home victory over UC Irvine. UCD is 5-1; UCI, which played without all-conference guard Luke Nelson in two losses last week, is in second place at 6-2.

More details on the Hawai’i at UCR game will be posted later.
