Jankovic signs NBA contract with Heat

With the NBA Summer League still in progress, former University of Hawai’i standout Stefan Jankovic has apparently done enough to impress the Miami Heat.

The Heat announced on Wednesday that it has signed Jankovic to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The contract does not assure Jankovic a spot on the 2016-17 Heat roster, but it should give him a chance to earn a spot on the roster through the team’s official training camp later this year.

Jankovic is currently playing with the Heat’s Summer League team in Las Vegas. He had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of action in the Heat’s 81-77 win over New Orleans on Wednesday.

Jankovic, the 2016 Big West Conference Player of the Year, is the first UH player since Carl English (Indiana Pacers) in 2003 to sign a NBA free agent contract directly after leaving UH.

“We’re extremely proud of Janks,” UH head coach Eran Ganot said. “He’s worked hard to get to this point and it’s great to see him take this big step closer to fulfilling his NBA dream. We’re thrilled for him and his family and everyone here on the islands will continue to send our support his way as he continues his journey.”

  1. “If Jankovic doesn’t lock down a spot, the team likely will try to sign him to its D-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, S.D. That might be the ideal place for the organization to mold his unique skillset with an eye on him earning a spot on the Heat roster later.
“Defensively, he can get a lot better,” Howard said. “He can do a better job guarding pick and rolls, protecting the basket and rebounding the ball in traffic. As he spends more time with us, we’ll instill the Miami Heat culture in him.”

  2. ” The Heat scouted Jankovic, a 6-foot-11, 234-pound stretch forward, throughout his senior season at the University of Hawaii and had him high on their list of potential undrafted targets. He hasn’t been overwhelming in summer league, but Miami saw enough potential to sign him Wednesday and have him on board for training camp this fall. “

  3. Alright !!!
Way to go Janks !! Keep up the good work !!

  4. Juwan Howard played here, in the Rainbow Classic.
    That was great!

  5. Watch Jank’s playing time go up now that he is on the Heat roster. Don’t understand why he didn’t get more playing time if they already were high on him.

  6. One of the articles said he had a groin injury earlier.

  7. akuhead, i couldn’t find Michigan playing in the Rainbow Classic in the UH history, unless i missed it.

  8. Congrats to Janks! There’s no doubt in my mind he will play pro ball somewhere. He’s only going to get better with his skill set. He’s pretty much a mismatch for guys his size out on the perimeter.

Speaking of big guys, does anyone know if Ganot signed any big men? Half the team is 6’7, 6,8. Are there any 7 footers?
