Hawai’i will play California on Friday at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena at Spokane, Wash., in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

The official 68-team brackets were announced this morning on CBS, including the first round of eight teams in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday.

The Rainbow Warriors (27-5) are seeded No. 13 in the South Region; the Golden Bears (23-10) are seeded No. 4 after an 82-78 overtime loss to Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals.

Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. (Hawai’i time), and it will be televised on TBS (Oceanic channels 551 and 1551 in Hawai’i).

The winner of the Hawai’i vs. Cal game will advance to the round of 32 on Sunday to face the winner of a game between No. 5 Maryland and No. 12 South Dakota State.

UH was one of only 10 top-seeded teams to win its conference tournament and secure an automatic NCAA Tournament berth; 20 other top seeds lost in their tournament and needed to wait for at-large bids.

Hawai’i advanced to its fifth NCAA Tournament (and first since 2002) with a thrilling 64-60 victory over Long Beach State in the championship game of the Big West Conference Tournament on Saturday at Anaheim, Calif.

The Warriors remained in Anaheim on Sunday, and gathered at a restaurant near the Honda Center to watch the NCAA Tournament Selection Show.

Cal closed its season by winning nine of its last 11 games. The Golden Bears finished the regular season tied for third place in the Pac-12 with a 12-6 record.

They were regarded as the top defensive team in the Pac-12, finishing first in the conference in points allowed (67.0) and opponent field goal percentage (.393).

Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin said of the Warriors: “I’ve watched them here and there during the season. I know they won their conference tournament. Very talented team. I know their big guy (Stefan Jankovic) is probably their best player. He was at Missouri when I was at Tennessee. He’s 6-11, can put the ball on the floor, can make shots from the perimeter, so I know he’s very talented but I can’t tell you about each individual guy.”

The Bears have five players averaging double-figure points. Tyrone Wallace, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, leads the Bears in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and assists at 4.4 per game.

The Bears can also boast two of the top freshmen in the entire country in 6-7 forward Jaylen Brown and 6-11 forward Ivan Rabb. Brown is averaging 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game; Rabb is averaging 12.5 points per game, and also leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game and a .622 field goal percentage. Both are projected to be first-round NBA Draft picks.

The others averaging double-figure points are 6-4 junior guard Jordan Matthews (13.2 points per game) and 6-6 guard Jabari Byrd (10.4 points per game).

There are four other players in the regular rotation, but they are mostly role players who are all averaging less than 3.6 points per game each.

Hawai’i and Cal shared just one common opponent this season – UC Santa Barbara. The Bears beat UCSB, 85-67, way back on November 16 at Berkeley, Calif. Hawai’i went 3-0 against UCSB, winning the three games by an average of 10.7 points per game, including an 88-76 win in the Big West Tournament semifinals last week.

  1. Even though Cal is talented I like this matchup in Spokane.

  2. I’ll tell you right now, Hawaii is going to beat California on Friday. Why? Because Charles Barkley is taking California and Charles is always wrong. Charles likes the Pac 12 because he lives on the West Coast. But, he doesn’t know squat about our Rainbow Warriors. Charles said the Golden State wouldn’t win the NBA title last year because they were a jump shooting team. He was wrong. He also said Golden State is NOT going to win the title this year and I think he’s going to be wrong again. Charles is funny, Charles is entertaining, but Charles is a joke because he shoots from the hip and doesn’t do his homework and he doesn’t like analytics and he makes wild predictions. Put in the bank, I believe Hawaii can win against California. California is very good at home, but they are not that good on the road. Game will be in Spokane, like a game in Pullman. Hawaii plays well on the road. On a neutral court, anything can happen. As the underdog Hawaii has more motivation to prove something. Can we say history in the making?

  3. Damn hard match with there talented freshmenand projected lottery picks Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb and projected lasts 1st round pick Tyronne Wallace and 2nd round projected Jabari Bird

    Nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com

I still gotta believe Hawaiii can do it Cinderella run

  4. I feel confident about our chances of beating Cal if everyone healthy, focused, and composed. We also have the advantage of being overlooked. There’s talk already of Cal playing Maryland in the next round. Also, they’ve played teams we’ve played in recent past and had similar results: Colorado, Oregon State, and UCSB.

    One game at a time

  5. Also, how is Maryland 5th and Cal 4th? I like our chances much better against Cal than Maryland.

You can bet our Cali players love that we’re playing a Cali team. Extra motivation.

  6. Once again. Hawaii dynamic ? Athletic from Q to Janks. Bench solid contributions. Defend big or small teams from Oklahoma to Fulerton. Warriors can win get to next round of 32. I think perfect draw for warriors. Pac12 teams bigger overall. Warriors quickness and defensive help rotation outstanding. They caise other teams to miss easy shots. Any team in south region look past warriors. Trouble. This game against Cal. Warriors have real chance to win first ncaa game and more. 27 wins. 11 wins away from Hawaii. And focus to do damage. My bracket Hawaii wins faces South Dakota St. next.
Go bows!! One for all warriors who helped you get here!

  7. Look at this way, would you rather face the other 4 seeds? Duke , Kentucky? Iowa State?? I would not.

  8. Cal freshmam foward 6’22” 220. Good one. He played at Bishop O’Dowd HS in cali? Was that same school Stef Jovanovic played at? Pac12 teams so tall guards. However warrior guards will disrupt their offensive flow. Plus Cal has never faced any 6’11” skilled inside out big who plays like a 2-4 ever. Anyone seen anyone in country with Janks at his size pop threes so easily and make them. Ability to drive and finish. Then Eran smart move Janks in trouble
Stef Jovanovic..playing as well as any center in paac12. He has to be most improved. A starter next year for sure!

  9. Hey, Janks made that All West Coast Team…wouldn’t that have included Cal players? Anyway, I was worried about playing Utah, who is used to the altitude, in Denver. I thought that would give them a big advantage. I am happy with the seed and all I can say is hey man, we’re dancing now! We’re playing the best of the best so everyone’s gonna be good, and we just gotta be better! Long Beach State worried me. Cal excites me. I’m in a whole new mode now, BRING IT ON!! FOCUS but HAVE FUN!! Show your skills, show your spirit, show the world you’re the Warriors baby! This team’s gonna represent! They already make us proud!!

  10. I like this matchup as well. I feel Hawaii has a good shot at this. Same old game plan.. stay out of foul trouble and rebound.. and yes have FUN out there!

    So proud of you guys!!!

  11. Yes. So happy for juniors and seniors! Win or lose. They personally given enough credit. Even with change in leadership they ALL stepped up got better. Like beautiful mansion all rooms pool landscape everything foundation in place Eran blessed to be able to put finish touches on masterpiece. And make sure mansion the team stayed strong not topple. Joint success. We proud 808. KeleyO you going to Spokane? Northwest thousands of Hawaii people live there. Warriors will have great fan support!!

  12. Great 1st Round Opponent!

    1) We get to stay on the West Coast.
    2) We are NOT at altitude.
    3) Our common opponent is UCSB…Cal won at home early when UCSB was missing a starter or two, 87-65.
    4) Cal beat St. Mary’s by only 4 points. Our offense is similar to St. Mary’s.
    5) We will get a very good scouting report from Coach Bennett.
    6) Cal lost 2 of their last 4 games.
    7) I liked the look on their faces when they announced UH as their opponents.
    8) It will be #4 vs #13 seed game…always an upset each year.
    9) This is a winnable game if play our best defense.

This will be our chance to play them as a make up to that $186K Vegas Tourney debacle.

    GO BOWZ

  13. and Jaylen Brown on the All-District team.

  14. Derek,

If Chuck had chosen UH to win I would’ve bet the house that we were going to lose….THAT would’ve been the death of us.

  15. Cal is 5-10 in away/neutral games this season (18-0 at home).

  16. 4 versus 13 seeds. Historically March Madness even playing field. No surprise UH rebound defend hit dagger threes . warriors Will win! I believe S. Dakota St. can upset Maryland!
Janks. Aaron.Mike. Big Stef. If this it for this season. Maybe next pending ncaa appeal. Go for Houston takeoff!!

Oakland follow team on ride of lifetime!!

  17. Just Win BOWS

  18. KelleyO … I see Ivan Rabb on the All-District IX team with Janks.
    http://www.sportswriters.net/usbwa/news/2016/alldistrict160308.html

  19. March Madness fun!!
    Darn ncaa appeal!!
Well Warrior nation just focus on This year.
Another win? Beat Savo led 27 win season 2002 with 26 wins against DI teams. 28 overall
    Go Warriors!!

  20. Clyde, thanks for the research in the previous post, i wasn’t at home for awhile.
Here’s a video on California vs Arizona in January.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr6PXFGbqQw

  21. Anyone know how to get tickets to the game?

  22. The defense will keep Uh in the game, but they need to hit shots to win it. Janks, Valdez and Rod need to show up and play up to their potential and need some offense from one of Sai/Q/Drammeh to step up. UH can do this!!

  23. Karl, I was wondering the same thing. Maybe UH ticket office has info?

  24. Looks like tickets can be purchased online from spokanearena.com

McInnis has the game scheduled for an 8 a.m. (Hawaii time) tipoff. Judging from the four stations showing games, it could be shown on TBS (551 or 1551, Oceanic), but that’s just a guess at this point.

  25. Selection show saying Cal had possibly 2 lottery picks?
I liked Ex tarheel Kenny Smith saying Cal better watch out. Hawaii has Bobbitt and Jankovich a mobile big. Kenny did his homework! Hawaii CAN have Sheriff.Niko.Sai. Jovanovic and Valdes in there for several minutes. Level of play still intense smart team ball. Funny not steals or blocked shots defense changer.. It is TAKING CHARGES..refs call lot of offensive charges.
Both teams key who takes charges.

  26. It will be on tbs! It’s been verified.

  27. Stay Healthy guys!! First Big West regular season and tourney championship banners going up at Stan Sheriff Arena. Plus wahine tourney champs to! I think made ncaa 2016 banners too?
Yes. The year for bsketball teams.!!

  28. A few weeks ago, when some were predicting that if we won we might go to Spokane, I checked out what ticket prices were gonna be like. All tickets were already sold out and the only way to buy them was through ticket outlets for minimum $150 nosebleed seats. Not sure, though, if school will get block of tickets. If so, season ticket holders will probably get first dibs or corporate sponsors, etc. Hope we find out soon. I doubt I can afford to go. Denver was a major hub and I had friends we could stay with. Spokane more expensive. Heavy sigh. Hard to resist though. Maybe save my money for sweet sixteen, lol. The only good thing about going to Denver would have been sweet 16 for Western Region back at Honda Center! Ok, ok. Just kidding. One game at a time, that’s my mantra. Kill Cal!!! Focus focus fun fun!!! We can do it!!! Go Bows!! Beat da Bears!

  29. Dan Dakich and Seth Greenberg also likes Hawaii. Dakich said I watched Hawaii and they’re good. Greenberg said Hawaii is a dangerous team, they turn you over, and they play hard. Someone also said Maryland always win their first game, but they lose in the second round. Sounds good! If Hawaii get by the first game, they probably get Maryland the next game. All this is great to speculate, but we’ll see what happens. The magical season, hopefully, will continue.

  30. Islandmand, check this one out, Cal vs. Oregon. Yikes. http://youtu.be/ekYZuNHO57g

The backwards dunk is kinda crazy.

Still, I like that they’re undefeated at home…not nearly as good on road, whereas we ARE the ROAD WARRIORS!!

  31. I think its very difficult to get tickets(at least at a reasonable price) to these games. I used to go to west coast regionals quite frequently(been to Oakland, San Jose, Phoenix, and Anaheim) but haven’t gone for the last 5 years and you kind of have to put in an applicant one year early and be put in a lottery. If they pick you name, you will be send an application and be asked to return it by a certain date or lose the priviledge to buy.

I think if you go on to the NCAA website now, you can put your name in for next year’s game.

I guess Stubhub might have some and UH might get a allotment for them to sell but I am assuming they will go to all the corporate bigwigs and UH’s athletics staff, administrators, etc…

  32. It’s magical,
    feeling good allover!

    One at a time.

May Lady Luck be with you always!!!!

  33. KelleyO going to follow Wahine? Probably there might be more seats available women ncaa opening round.?
Must have fun rush floor for fans. Been wild yet winning. 2 staff. New and most older team run. They said would finish second time appearance at Big West Cjampionship. They did it. Eran has to recruit maybe 6 guys similar heart and talent. Next season 32 wins regular season? Go for it bows!!

  34. A friend in Spokane (transplanted Honolulu native) called the arena and was told the session packages are sold out and they weren’t sure if they were going to sell tickets to individual games. She was told to call back in a day or two. As kahuna said, it’s a tough ticket to get. Hopefully, UH will have an allotment for those who can make it up there.

  35. NIT only selects 32 teams and UC Irvine was left out and they are mad. LBSU was selected, because they were in the Big West Finals ? Irvine has a slightly better RPI than LBSU and UH. So if UH didn’t get in the Big West Finals and didn’t have the top seed, they would not have been selected for the NIT.

  36. Brian McInnis ‏@Brian_McInnis 56 minutes ago

UH will have packages for a couple hundred tickets in its section of the arena. Athletic department is working on preparing a web page.

  37. islandman, you are a fountain of information.

  38. The Cal athletics’ site says 200 tickets to the Hawaii game are available to basketball season ticket holders and booster club members. They’re sold on a first come basis. Also, if you get a ticket to the first game and Cal wins then you’re automatically charged for the second game regardless of whether or not you want to or can attend. I haven’t seen anything about tickets on the Hawaii athletics’ site.

  39. Here’s one writer’s ranking of all 68 teams in the tournament. UH is ranked No. 48, the catch is Cal is ranked No. 17.

“48. Hawaii: The Rainbow Warriors are a 27-5 team! And ranked 61st in KenPom. Let’s give this group its due here. This is a physical team that is going to give Cal some trouble.”
    http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25515820/march-madness-bracket-ranking-the-2016-ncaa-tournament-field-1-68

  40. Monson and 49ers must have inside connection to ncaa/nit slection. Absolutely shocked Irvine not get nit bid. Political. Must be SOS? LBSU one of strongest in ncaa. Whom they played. Maybe if Irvine made finals maybe. Irvine class program under Turner. Warriors so important had top seed in case lost finals. True Big West no respect one bid ncaa or nit league. UH has to step up too. Overall athletic facilities what can offer recruits. I think 100 % we enjoy first time in 14 years ncaa bid. Very hard to do. Warriors core plus Niko.Sheriff. Sai All got it done. Ncaa ir NIT..NO CIT OR CBI if possible. Irvine right to be peeved!!

  41. Thanks islandman and Kelley for links

. Still think warrior defense team individual helpside. Just athletic and fast! The other top 25 teams? Their guards loose with ball. Lazy passes. Warriors move 3 times as fast. Great famtastic recruits brought in to produce this type of team. Yea. We had Fotu. Negus. Sammis in addition. Wow. Houston anyone ?Special warrior win against Cal history made!!

  42. Irvine will play North Dakota on the road in the CIT, per UCI website.
    http://www.ucirvinesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/2015-16/releases/20160313y23pgn

  43. From http://www.bearinsider.com, Cuonzo Martin said:

“I watched (Hawaii) here and there during the season,” Martin said. ‘I know they won their conference tournament and their big guy (Stefan Jankovic) is probably their best player. He was at Missouri when I was at Tennessee. He likes to put the ball on the floor and can make shots from the perimeter so he’s very talented. I don’t know a lot about their individuals.”

I really hope Cal are taking us lightly and planning ahead for the Maryland game.

  44. Yes, OAKLAND, just win bows!!!
Great sitting near you, as always, sir!!
Looks like my son will have to miss his second straight week of school! Lol
One of my friends back home joked that he’d call child protective services on me for my kid being away from home so long! Lol
I think this is a tremendous life experience, nonetheless, and tops his 5th grade private school edumacation!! And we have study hall EVERY day to keep up with his classes 🙂
Two free days for disneyland, then on to spokane, via car!! Father/son road trip = priceless!
Love our warriors! Speaking of warriors, Q was a true warrior last night. He could barely walk pre-game. Sheriff had his best game of the season, in my opinion. We will need EVERYONE healthy, focussed, and pumped up to beat this super talented and underrated (and underachieving) cal team. Let’s hope our age/maturity and schemes can trump their young, raw talent!!
Go bows, just win!!! (Shock the world, make sweet 16, and REALLY break my bank account, as I’d then have to take the son and I to Louisville, kentucky!! Hahaha)

  45. In the NCAA, to get on a run you have to have some good luck and some breaks. You needs good guard play to take care of the ball, score and distribute, and control the tempo. It is all about winning the close games and advance. You don’t have to beat everybody. Teams will knock off each other. Remember George Mason? Remember Virginia Commonwealth? Remember Wichita State? Remember Butler, twice? UH needs to get on a good run and play smart. It can be done. They seem to have some very good karma. We are very proud of this team, but we want more madness. Gotta believe.

  46. Btw, don’t anyone EVER accuse daboyz808 or I of NOT rooting hard enough. With 2 mins left in the game last night, a game being horribly officiated (Faust had about 9 fouls lol), the ref FINALLY had enough of our berating him from our second row seats and he called security to have us removed!!! Hahahah what a cry baby! Could it be that he knew we were right? We used NO profanity, but we did consistently call him by his first name and point out his bad calls. When he brought over security, his exact words were “they’ve been on me all night” rofl
We refused to move, told the security we did nothing wrong, others in our section backed us up, and we got to watch the final 2 mins in our seats (before storming the court) with 4-5 security guards surrounding our seats and watching our every move!! Hahaha
If that ain’t commitment, what is???!!
    True story 🙂

  47. Just noticed that all eligible players seem to be at the championship game except Cornelisson. Anyone know why he was left behind? Hoping he gets an invite to the big dance, shame for one player to miss out on all the hype, especially given the cheer leaders and band all made it. Seems a bit odd after all Ganot’s comments about them being one big family and doing this together. Maybe all is not what it seems? Not a good look for any future Aussie prospects

  48. team fan,

as far as i know, cornelissen hasn’t been on any road games this season. it’s also worth noting that he was a last-minute walk-on. based on his limited playing time, i find it unlikely that he’ll be around next season.

  49. Way to go, WeBleedGreen! Glad you were allowed to stay and got to “storm the court” with the rest of us. Refs/umpires are not supposed to have rabbit ears. To me, part of their job is to endure heckling from the crowd. It should be expected, and when you suck, well, not only should you expect it, you deserve it, ha!

  50. Bringing players on road trips comes down to budgets and league rules on the number of players that can travel and dress. I was contemplating flying to the regional game but Spokane is a nightmare to get to and there is such limited hotel space too. Denver would have been much easier logistically, but would have been tougher on the team with the time change and altitude issues.

  51. NOT That Any of it’s Easy…

BUT UH WILL BE Better Prepared for Berkeley (than Cal is for US)
    MORE Serious Coaching Staff
BETTER Students of “The College Game”
    Recruiting IS A Great Skill…
CAN They REALLY Get Into Berkeley?
BUT YOU ARE NOT Working toward Long-Term Goals Like Doing YOUR Homework, Studying and Preparing, Team Bonding (LOOK How Long it Takes OUR Good Guys to Come Together to PEAK Performance, Two, Three Years? FOURTH?), Skills Preparation, Mental Growth when YOU Commit to ONE-AND-DONEs (Why Do I Need to Go to ANY Semester Classes? MANY Spend their Second Semester on Probation…SO “They” MADE The “He Went PRO” Exemption Rule to Protect the Top Dogs…)

KENPOM ‘MATH’ Has CAL Favored By FIVE
UH Has Exceeded Predicted Margins By Five or More Numerous Times…
(Also Come Up Short) BUT Seem ‘MORE’ Likely to Over-Achieve ON-The-ROAD

BleedGreen and Boyz808: Wifey was ONE Of Those Shouting Down Refs and Backing YOU Up with Security — FREE Speech ! — Agree NO Vulgarities — REF! Cannot Handle The Truth Make Fair Calls BOTH Ways! After a While I Was SURE Security was Ready to Protect And Back YOU Guyz Up…

KO – Agree …The Best Refs Help the Players and Coaches Understand the Rules And What They Can see from their Perspective…NOT Thin-Skinned and Rabbit-Eared…

Technically, BY Playing Friday, They Already “MADE” The Final 48
    (4 Lose Tuesday,16 Lose on Thursday… )
Playing from 13-Seed (13-4)…Second Game, 5-12 IS Similar Level of Competition…
    (Versus Harder 7-8,1-16 Path)
That’s One Way Underdogs Make it to 16…

    GO ‘BOWS
    Just Keep On WINNIN’!

  52. This team has everything you needs to win it all!!!!!! WEBLEEDGREEN this is one hell of a reason to break the bank. I’ve been to all the games since Feb, 6 weeks straight of a great ass run to the Big Dance!!!! What can you say bad about those BAD TO THE BONE BOWS “nothing” these guys have put HAWAII sports back on the map and they’re havent finished yet.. I’m ready to start this up, Bows are a hard team to to scout in a week and one things everyone in this tournament better realize is we can score mid 70’s in a slow down half court game, that’s what coach built this season!!!!! That puts us way above other teams, if you want to run with us then be ready Q AV always above the rim ST JANK ROD sittin I’m the hot spot for kick back three Mr. T and J-Von cleans everything up and both have solid mid range shots! With addition of the 50 crew just adds more depth !!!!!!!! “HOW WOULD YOU LIKE A GLASS OF THIS NEW HAWAIIAN PUNCH”!!!!!!! JUST WIN BOWS

  53. Niko and Sheriff have really stepped up their game. We can go legitimately 9 deep now which is a great sign heading into the tourney.

  54. Televised on TBS per warrior insider article above and streaming, i think at
    http://www.ncaa.com/march-madness-live/game/204

  55. ESPN just posted a 38% chance we be Cal ummmmmm the must be doing some research on those Bows!!!!!

  56. We beat cal

  57. Heard Hawaiii50 have their bags packed and dancing shoes on!! Will we have the whole team together with Jack and Jakob as well Hope so as we have the best team and our players are there for each other. Go BOWS

  58. FYI: Game televised on TBS, Friday morning.

  59. OAKLAND, while espn knows nothing, I LOVE that amount of respect!! 38% is near 50-50…on of a 13vs4 matchup??? Unheard of!! The world is starting to take notice! I think we have an even better chance of beating Maryland AFTER we beat cal!
The key is staying outta foul trouble and rebounding against this very tall and athletic cal team!

Oakland, yes, a very good reason to break the bank!! I’ve missed only 3 games all season (Texas tech and the Santa barbara/cal poly road trip)!! I knew this team was going to be special for two years now, just had to mature and jel as a group, which is why we have the advantage on cal. They MAY have the higher rated players with superior (barely) athleticism, but our guys have taken 3 years to get better TOGETHER, mature, find love for one another. We are a “team”, cal is a group of players that play on the same team. Huge difference…our guys are a family.

  60. Ok, I found some fuel for the fire. This irritates me SOOOO much. ESPN and other media outlets are giving Hawaii some props, that’s good. On the NCAA website? Where they SHOULD BE IMPARTIAL? They have an articl titled “March Madness Prediction: Every 1st Round Game Examined” and on Hawaii they say:

“Maryland vs. South Dakota State. It’ll be a real fireworks show of talent if it’s Maryland vs. California in the second round.

    California vs. Hawaii (see above)”

In other words, WHEN Hawaii wins it won’t be a fireworks show of talent??? We will win because, what? We’re lucky? They had an off night? Isaac Fotu borrowed an IPad 2 years ago? The NCAA can go have relations with itself.

  61. Wow, breaking news, Cal just fired their assistant coach based on Sexual Harrassment charges!!

  62. That 38% just went up at least 10 percentage points!!! Not to mention seriously bad karma.

  63. I would be so stoked if UH can beat California in basketball, AND UH beat California in football in Australia to start the Rolo Era.

On yesterday’s ESPN, Jay Bilas liked Hawaii too. He didn’t think Hawaii would win, but he thought that Hawaii can win, emphasize CAN. I personally like the idea that we are underdogs by 6.5 points. That’s not a lot. Ganot and Company have all the motivation and chip on their shoulder in the world to pull up the upset.

There’s some talk already that Ganot is a hot commodity and teams are coming after him. Just the nature of the business I suppose. Can’t keep a good man down. Matlin might have to re look his contract and tear it up and give him a new one. Stay tuned.

  64. I was filling out my bracket on ESPN and noticed Cal is a 7pt favorite over us. Guess Vegas didn’t get the memo that this is a 4 seed vs. a 13?? LOL! Comparatively in the same division, #3 seed Miami is a 14pt favorite over #14 seed Buffalo, while #7 Iowa is a 7.5pt favorite over #10 Temple. Crazy, right??

People who actually know enough about the team seem pretty inclined to give them a legitimate shot at the upset. According to ESPN Insider, Hawaii’s best case scenario is making the sweet 16, which is how far I’m predicting them to go. Wouldn’t that be something, for Hawaii to play in the sweet 16 against Kansas??

It’s going to be crazy. I’m glad the game’s at 8am Hawaii time so I’ll actually be able to watch it before going in to work. So excited! And thanks for the intel on the ‘Cal drama’ KellyO!

  65. While I’m not a big fan of the attention Hawaii draws as being recognized as a potential upset, I definitely appreciate the national recognition that people do see us a legitimate threat to big-6 conference teams, AKA ‘Giants’.

Some quotes from ESPN’s Insider articles, for those who don’t have access…

(Posted on 7 MAR) “And now, on to the five most vulnerable potential Giants:

California Golden Bears (Giant Rating: 71.4): Subjectively, we would rather be rooting for Cal’s fantastic freshmen than against them, but our model sees several reasons to worry. The Bears are highly efficient at both ends because they can shoot from anywhere and work the boards, but turnovers are a problem. Cal loses the ball on nearly 18 percent of possessions, while forcing turnovers on just 13.8 percent of opponent possessions. That’s largely a result of their style — their players talk about “getting our safeties back” after they get shots off — but it’s extreme: The Bears rank 348th in the NCAA in defensive turnover percentage.”

    (Posted on 14 MAR)

“Giant Killers: Top 10 games ripe for an early upset

    5. California (4) vs. Hawaii (13) 36.4 percent

Conventional wisdom says California is peaking at the right time, but our model picks up the fact that the Bears have a problem with turnovers — Cal surrenders them on 17.5 percent of possessions, but forces them on just 14.1 percent — and recognizes that Hawaii is keyed by Roderick Bobbitt and Quincy Smith, a pair of highly disruptive guards. With the possession arrow tilted toward the Rainbow Warriors, this is much scarier than a typical 4-13 contest.”

  66. I think we can pull the upset!

  67. Oakland510.

.that is why called March Madness! A 13 seed can win several and go as far as they can. This team was put together to make this run. We can see the results. Key guys signed in? Rod and Janks. Rod the point man . Janks the All around 6’11” 235 threat. I don’t see any player his size that has guard skills. AV did not have to score much to affect winning.Q leadership. Big Stef Jovan. Now hot prospect. True center . one of best in country no joke. MT.Sai .Sheriff. Niko. They are at least 9 solid and who knows even 11deep. Agreed. Been watching hundreds of ncaa games past 2 seasons. Last year started run. Great fantastic thanks BT.Eran his schemes match talent. Eran recognizes he has next man up team all bought in. Now one of better teams in nation. You right. Fast or slow . warriors can win. Oakland what a way for Rod and team past 2 years to finish probably with well over 50 wins total.nows stay healthy and hot? They can be in Houston. No joke team has depth. Talent. Great coaching. And the Belief they can beat anybody!! By now they are a California/Hawaii based team acclimated to thr mainland. They can go far. Every team their guards take bows for granted. Loose with ball or not rotate ball quick enough. Ball taken. They try to score at rim.shot blocked or a bow is taking charge. Go anti analyst prediction. Not a One and done. Elite eight bows goal. Then go for it!! Go Bows!!

    Fans Oakland is right
Bows hard to scout. They have complete team!!

  68. The men staying on the mainland, i presume ? They have been there since March 1 while the Wahine who were there from around March 7 came back home. How can they keep up to date for their school work ?

  69. islandman. Good point. Know they have academic advisor or assistants make sure. Plus online submit work. The farthest this ncaa run goes is I believe 2 weeks. Must be economics? Or if warriors some magic make it to elite eight. Maybe come back few days. Listen to curran talk to Eran I guess. Or media. All teams facing same thing. However warriors home 2500 miles out in pacific ocean! They figure it out.Nobody homesick. They happy to be dancing!!

  70. UCSB is in the new Vegas 16 postseason tournament, but only 8 teams were selected. Nevada is in the CBI, one of 16 teams, along with Manroop’s Seattle team.

  71. We will be underdogs the entire tournament. Not many giving us a chance even Cal. Everyone talks about the Bears having a good defense and fail to mention that Hawaii’s defense is worthy of mentioning too. I really hope that this is the year Hawaii as well as other mid-major teams will pull one upset after another and show how smart so-called analysts are. Don’t believe they have even watched one game with Hawaii but looking at stats to make their predictions. After winning the Big West Tournament Hawaii was snubbed in the two major polls? If I were the players I would go watch the movie Transformers and become optimistic like the robot Optimus Prime. Then you can leek any body—not only California but Kansas!

  72. islandman,

players have tutors on the road, and professors are lenient with assignment due dates. look at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, they played 16 or their first 17 games away this season. Us being on the road since March 1 is nothing compared to what that team went through.

  73. FYI: Wahine seeded 14th and will play No. 3 UCLA in LA on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

  74. We see teams the Wahine played earlier in the season in the NCAA’s. ASU, South Carolina,Texas A & M and Penn.

  75. Rabb is from Oakland.

  76. In the true to life basketball movie, Coach Carter, starring Samuel Jackson, the story was about a high school team which was divided and came together under Carter (Jackson) who went far in the state tournament. The high school came from Oakland I believe. There are lots of good players from that area including Gary Payton, and Damon Lilliard, as well as Roderick Bobbitt, and I’m sure a lot more. Hope Ganot can get some good players from that area.

  77. will there be any replays of the game?…certain apps or sites that have video streaming and that doesn’t show the score before watching

  78. The Washington Post lists Hawaiias one of four Cinderallas that can make it to the Sweet 16!

  79. Like that old Marvin Gaye song!!!!! LETS GET IT ON!! The more the analyst watch highlights from our season the more respect we will get! JUST WIN BOWS! But monkeys off our back let’s make history! Team1 Cal record was mediocre we play great away from home. WEBLEEDGREEN don’t this feel good your boys have to love it!

  80. Oakland
WE. BELIEVE 808!! Reminds us of Warrior football 13-1 Suugar Bowl team. 2008. Oakland that 2002 Rainbow team tough guys. Led by future NBA free agent Predrag Savovic 6’6″ guard. They believed won 27 games. And 12th seed vs 5th Xavier. Rainbows led by 10 at half. Untilran out of gas. Warriors 2016 energized very athletic 5 guys on floor can score inside out defend 94 feet. No shock Bows veteran team win all the way to Houston!
808 believe because Bows are very good. Hope Rod future GS warrior or anywhere top level. Top tough as nails smart PG!

  81. Here’s the article from the Washington Post…..

    Hawaii

Opponents: vs. California; Round of 32 – Maryland/South Dakota State

Similarly to Stephen F. Austin, Hawaii forces a high number of turnovers (nearly 20 percent), and the Rainbow Warriors’ own sloppiness with the ball shouldn’t be an issue versus California, which is essentially turnover averse. Only four teams force opponents to commit fewer giveaways. Cal’s strength is its defense, a physical and well-executed man-to-man scheme that has given opponents fits this season. But Hawaii could exploit Cal with its three-point shooting and foul-generating offensive pressure.

Teams make 35 percent of their threes against the Bears, and while Hawaii isn’t the most accurate from beyond the arc (32 percent), it takes a high percentage of them (and both Sai Tummala and Stefan Jankovic are both capable from deep: 40 percent and 37 percent, respectively). Coupled with foul issues that have dogged the Bears’ Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb, Hawaii could advance.

That would likely generate a matchup against Maryland, a team that is very sloppy with the basketball, despite the presence of Melo Trimble. Hawaii guards the perimeter very tightly, and could take away the Terps’ jump-shooting. Hawaii’s defensive non-transition effective field goal percentage, per Hoop-Math.com, ranks 15th nationally (43 percent), and both the Cal and (potentially) Maryland matchups should be a showcase for Roderick Bobbitt, a 6-3 defensive stopper who could be the toast of the South region.

  82. Maryland Terrapins Dickman’s team? Who he for? 808 for bows. Once again point spread even on neutral court.
Warriors quickness on defense. Any Cal miss warriors get boards. Half court superior. Go Bows!!

Oakland ..you familiar with Ivan Rabb 6’11” forward possible nba draftee?
Send some bay area boys to Hawaii? Like Phil Handy?

  83. Rainbow Warriors ranked No. 3 out of 68, based on team name and mascot.
    http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/03/ncaa-tournament-2016-team-ranked-by-team-name-mascot

Didn’t know we had a mascot.

  84. Cal’s basketball forum has a new thread entitled ‘UH thinks Cal is a good matchup’. Interesting to see their fans’ perspective. Funny how some got confused between Jovanovic and Janks. They also really only talk about Janks. Very little mention of Bobbitt and Valdes. No mention of Q, Thomas, Tummala, and 5-0 at all. I like that a lot!

  85. I would like to see Sai hit 40 3’s over the course of the tournament. That breaks down to about 5 or 6 per game and doesn’t leave much room for misses. Everyone will have to pick up their games. Quickness, toughness, smarts, team play, all of it. Get those wins. Win ! Go Bows !

  86. Spokane up in beautiful mountain area. Ski. Pines. River. Stream. Lakes. Very nice area. Stan Sheriff they expand to 14000 and Hawaii has monies. Maybe one day host west regional. What 16 teams who have never been here would Not want to come? Great for economy and recruiting. Oh yes. Money and logistics! Smoked salmon.
NCAA host venue first class treatment for teams!
Warriors get used to. Might be snowing or rain? Or gorgeous. Get 2 wins. Move on!!

  87. Thanks, Islandman. It doesn’t say how much the tickets are, does anyone know? Wonder if any will be available by my turn at 11 am tomorrow and what time I’d have to be there to stand in line. Not only do I have health issues, I live in Ewa…ugh. Not that I can afford to go, but I keep checking online all day like by some miracle there’s gonna be a cheap flight suddenly appear! Lol.

  88. Sai needs to step up and hit a lot of 3s. He did not have a good Big West tournament and in fact he shot poorly and he got in foul trouble. We need his firepower very badly to compete. If he can get hot he can make 3 or 4 in a row. Because he was off his minutes were limited. He knows it and I’m sure he’s more determined than ever.

  89. Got an email from a friend in Spokane. She didn’t want to wait so she bought tickets through Stub Hub. They cost $118. I’m guessing it’s just for Friday’s session.

  90. During the critical closing minutes of the epic UH-LBState final, at the request of one of the officials, several security people were called over to send one of our local fans to the showers. Sitting near courtside, this individual and one of his friends had spent the majority of the game yelling at the officials often by name. Although not profanities (the worst was you suck over and over), for those sitting nearby, it appeared actually quite justified as these “fans” seemed more interested in constantly riding the refs than cheering for the Bows.

Speaking as a former college player, I can testify that this kind of stuff if anything is counterproductive and affects some officials more than others. On the court, players that complain too much or visibly at times show up officials are often going to pay for it later. Human nature does come into play on those 50-50 calls! Coaches remind players about this problem all the time but occasionally in the heat of the moment some players have a hard time dealing with adversity on the court.

Can the same thing result from fans behavior as well? Are UH fans worse than at other arenas? The answer to the first question is in some cases it does while IMO the answer to the second question is probably in general no. Also does it help for a coach to ʻwork the officials”? Itʻs part of a coachʻs job to decide his approach, and youʻll get arguments on both sides.

However accounting for this kind of attention getting behavior raises some questions: First if you know the game as in the case of this particular situation, the majority of the calls were understandable and the officiating was OK IMO. In any game there will be judgement calls, and itʻs hard to take when you donʻt get the call. As a good player, you learn to let it go on the calls as you can lose focus on the court. Foul discrepancies are pointed out quite a bit especially in a loss but often it has to do with the way the game is played i.e. driving a lot vs more perimeter orientation, man vs zone etc. Actually in this game, UH only was called for 17 while LBST had 22.

No question how many beers is a factor, and some fans lose it as a result. Also some fans especially in the pros feel that the price of a ticket comes with the right to say anything or do anything they want. “Kill the ump” and other classic anti-official outbursts are OK once in awhile but not non-stop screaming can start to be pathological .Interestingly in major league baseball with the many available replays, managers have been less frequently tossed because the evidence is clear one way or the other and reversals can occur.

Lastly psychologically for some people, it appears to fulfill a need to take out lifeʻs frustrations on the officials. A friend of mine (a supervisor at a large grocery store) explained it this way: “All day I have to deal with peopleʻs complaints, yes maʻam, I understand how you feel, the customer is always right etc. When I go to a game, Iʻll sometime harangue the refs and I feel better!”

The bottom line is that continually screaming at officials (especially even when they get it right ) doesnʻt help your team, does not sit well with nearby fans, and often makes you look foolish in the process. One of the security people mentioned afterwards that the individual in question would have been escorted out of the arena immediately if the game wasnʻt so close to the end so for him he was fortunate to see the finish and have the opportunity to participate in the great post game celebrations.

Would these guys have been ejected at SS Center or Aloha Stadium? Possibly not but in a big time neutral arena like the Honda Center (where officials can easily get in touch with security people and target offensive individuals), itʻs definitely a no-no and an embarrassment to our school. So hopefully if they have a chance to go to Spokane, they will keep that in mind.

The lesson might be as we hear over and over here in high school gyms, is to try and “cheer with aloha.” Lately weʻve seen some pretty disgraceful fan behavior at high school games. Remember folks, your younger kids and other youngsters are
watching. Hawaii should be better than that at all levels!!!

  91. With this 2014 to 2016 great warrior run. From Zach to Sai and team first. To a man . They want to finish as one of top 8. 4. or 2 teams in ncaa dance. You can feel it. The confidence. One family. One goal philosophy is running 100 %.!! Go Bows!
Houston the warriors might be landing in 2 weeks! They have the athletes. And defend too well. And cam closeout close games with 4 good guards!!

  92. Thanks WeBleedGreen for being right there with us to let the refs know of their one sided calls. What’s upsetting is that a ref needs to say that something was thrown on the court in an effort to have us removed in addition to our meeting them know what we felt.Yes, The Security people knew that if they wanted to remove us that they would have to remove many people from the arena as everyone was on them about their calls. Back to back offensive fouls on UH, many over the back calls that we overlooked, and many other and one calls that were clearly missed.

On our way to Spokane to cheer this team on. See all of you there.

Any word on Q? Niko played some good minutes and glad to see that he and reef were looking a bit more of densely. Hustle for those rebounds, concentrate on those free throws, and okay your hearts out.

    Go Bows!!’
