NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The University of Hawai’i basketball team had its best shooting night of the season in an 84-73 victory over CSUN on Thursday evening at The Matadome.

The Warriors shot a season-best 53.7 percent from the field, and held the lead for most of the game.

Four Hawai’i players finished in double-figure points: Stefan Jankovic with 15, Aaron Valdes 12, Isaac Fleming 11, and Roderick Bobbitt 10. Four others scored eight – Garrett Nevels, Quincy Smith, Negus Webster-Chan and Stefan Jovanovic.

Hawai’i improved to 15-7 overal and 3-3 in the Big West Conference, including two victories over CSUN. The Matadors dropped to 6-16 and 2-5.

The Warriors hit four of their first seven shots, and raced to a 10-4 lead to open the game. They increased the lead to 27-17 midway through the first half, but the Matadors responded with an 8-0 surge to cut the Hawai’i lead to 27-25 with 7:14 remaining in the half.

The Warriors answered right back with a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 37-25. Nevels hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to give Hawai’i a commanding 50-34 lead at intermission.

Hawai’i shot 58.8 percent (20 for 34) from the field in the first half, while CSUN shot 40.6 percent (13 for 32). Valdes scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in the first half.

A 3-pointer by Jankovic early in the second half gave the Warriors a 55-37 lead, but the Matadors got back in it with a 15-3 run that cut the Hawai’i lead to 58-52 with 12:16 remaining in the second half.

The Warriors regained control with a 11-2 surge that pushed their lead back up to 69-54 with 9:16 remaining. The surge included seven points on free throws. CSUN never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Stephen Maxwell did his part to keep CSUN in it, finishing with game-highs of 28 points and 17 rebounds.

The Warriors will remain on the road for a Big West Conference game at Long Beach State on Saturday.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. Referees had such light whistles on a ton of plays that should be no-calls. I guess I can’t complain because we ended up shooting more FT’s than csun.

    I noticed Jawato wasn’t there…. Hmm.

  2. Tremendous win.

  3. Great win fellas….very happy with Bigwest.tv that gives online streaming for road games…unfortunately doesn’t stream on iphones and only on desktops, but I am not complaining….just saying.

Good luck with the rest of the road streak. Go bows!

  4. Great win! The team was focused! Jankovic, 15 points (led team), 7 rebounds (led team), and 2 blocks (led team)… and the rest of the team, balanced scoring.

  8. Great win BOWZ, 1st conference win on the road…albeit against the easiest team on this road trip.

Coach, this is the referee crew that you DO NOT want in the tournament. That head ref has always had it in for UH going back years! Tonight, however, they were balanced, but they love to call T’s.

Been looking forward to our match up against the Beach in the Pyramid for months now. Who is going to “try” and stop Caffey?!

With a little over 4 minutes left tonight, Fullerton had an 11 point lead over Long Beach. Caffey stepped up and made 4 out of 5 from more than 3′-5′ beyond the arc. He scored 18 pts from that point and on into the OT, which they won.

Saturday’s game will really show whether we are a Contender or a pretender.

    GO BOWZ

  9. Jawato..Unless you know..left home back spasms..

  11. Great start to this road trip. Keep up the energy and focus for the next game.
    Go Warriors!

  12. I’m so looking forward to watching Saturday’s game against Long Beach… My bet is that Garrett Nevels is going to be assigned to guard Caffey, with Bobbitt proving some weak side help and steal a few balls…

If we beat Long Beach… that’s going to help open things up…

  18. This year we got CSUN’s number. Although I missed the first half they don’t seem to like playing zone. I guess they felt that they had a better chance beating Hawaii going man. But they played into Hawaii’s strength. When you see balanced scoring like that it’s awfully hard for opposing teams to defend all of them. And when one or two are struggling, the others will make up for it. With the exception of free throws down the stretch, Hawaii did what they had to do to get the win. Nothing fancy just tough out the first game with a win. The next game with Long Beach will be exciting. Look for Hawaii to resume their ball snatching ways and pressure defense. The second game is where they really shine.

  19. Espn3 game…national telecast…balance…7 guys scoring 8 to 15 ppg and 2 at 4 and 5 ppg
