Warriors race past UC Davis, 84-76

Aaron Valdes scored 21 points and Stefan Jankovic and Mike Thomas each added 13 points tonight to help Hawai’i race past UC Davis, 84-76, in a Big West Conference men’s basketball showdown.

A late-awakening crowd of 4,410 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Isaac Fleming and Garrett Nevels each add nine points as the Rainbow Warriors improve to 14-6 overall, 2-2 in the Big West. The Aggies fell to 14-4, 4-1.

UC Davis led, 21-14, after Avery Johnson’s bank shot eight minutes into the game. But UH senior guard Nevels, who had missed the previous three games after undergoing surgery on his right (shooting) hand on Dec. 31, banked in a left-handed shot from about 10 feet out to ignite a 9-3 run capped by Valdes’ layup to close it to 24-23 with 7:48 remaining in the first half. Jankovic then later dropped a baseline floater to start a 14-2 run topped off by Valdes’ fast-break slam dunk off a Fleming assist to put the Rainbow Warriors ahead, 39-30, with 2:30 left.

Two free throws by Thomas later pushed the lead to 48-35 with 1:07 remaining, and Hawai’i took a 48-37 lead into halftime.

The Aggies closed it to 48-39 to open the second half, but that was as close as they would get until the closing seconds, as the Rainbow Warriors led by as many as 24 points midway through the second half.

The Warriors will remain at home for another Big West home game on Saturday against UC Irvine.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. Great win mbb team..enjoy for tonite..get ready yo be giant killers
    get mamadou and irvine !!

    Benjy cogratulations on win 14 and coubting (overall)and 2-2 bwc

    Go warriors

  2. Mamodou didn’t play again tonight vs. CSUN. Too bad some fans threw some things on the floor at the UH game tonight. Bad sportsmanship.

    Fleming was amazing on the steals . And the team defense causing UC Davis three back court violations.

  3. Those fans should be banned from the SSC. Have some class folks.This isn’t Fresno State, haah.

  4. Or UCSB with that crazy…safety first,….just a game..show class win or lose!

    Team get rebounds and they are awseome..
    can team go7-4 rest of regular season..hoping and probable
    that G..what a warrior like coach on the floor
    fleming= figure

  5. Flemings= fire
    nevels= ice

  6. student section guys , stay under control, we don’t want anymore techs, and Valdes , you’re doing well, but please stop whining to the refs, its getting old on them , and you got a tech, Flemmings, if you keep mouthing off at the other team it’s going to cost us a game one day and that would be Tragic , and you’ll be sitting on da pine for a lonnnnng time , come on man , shut it and just play the game., win with class .

  7. 7-5 rest of bwc season…9-7 and ready to rock in anaheim, if bigs can rebound !!
    Go bows !!

  8. Writer Steve Murray (via twitter @SteveMurray84):

    Benjy Taylor could Jankovic the rest of the season: “I think so because he’s played so well in practice. He’s my starting tweener.”

  9. Benjy staff lay down mbb law…play ball , passionately, with integrity, be hngry , humble, appears a few on team getting reputation for mouthing..could lose key guys and that one win that could get them to post season
    benjy and team captains Q and G..have players only meeting and address
    very emotional some guys..benjy make sure they stop getting t’d up
    could cost season of hard effort
    otherwise team is all heart.
    fun bunch.and 6 different guys hit threes !
    Go Bows !!

  10. I saw two fans in the student section get escorted out by SSC employees for throwing items. As someone else mentioned, these fans should be banned from all UH sporting events. Maybe even face school suspension or get expelled. What was even more concerning was I heard other students cheering on these idiots. Makes me think it’ll probably happen again.
