Munoz will miss another season with injury

Juan Munoz will sit out the entire 2022-23 season for the University of Hawai’i basketball team due to an Achilles injury. The 6-foot guard limped off the court midway through the second half of the Rainbow Warriors’ 87-71 exhibition victory over Hawai’i-Hilo on Thursday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The extent of the injury was unknown immediately after the game, but it was announced on Saturday that Munoz will need surgery on his right Achilles.

Munoz, who is already a graduate student in his seventh season of NCAA basketball, will likely end his career with the Rainbow Warriors without playing a regular-season game. He also missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Munoz transferred to Hawai’i in 2021 after five seasons at Longwood University in Virginia. He also sat out two seasons at Longwood due to knee injuries.

In what amounts to his only public appearance in a Hawai’i uniform, Munoz tallied 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and five assists in the Warriors’ exhibition win over UH-Hilo. He played a reserve role in the exhibition game, but was expected to challenge for a starting spot in the backcourt this season.
