Warriors’ Big West opener appears to be cancelled

Perhaps fitting for 2020, the University of Hawai’i basketball team appears likely to close the calendar year with two cancelled games.
The Rainbow Warriors’ scheduled Big West Conference regular-season opening series with Cal Poly is showing as “Cancelled” on the Big West’s website. However, no official announcement has been made by Hawai’i or Cal Poly, and the games are still being listed on both schools’ websites, with starting times and other game information.
The games are/were scheduled for December 27 and 28. KHON2 Sports is reporting that a positive COVID-19 case within the Cal Poly program is the reason for the last-minute cancelling.
Hawai’i’s next games are scheduled for January 8 and 9, on the road at UC Riverside. UCR is currently in a “pause” of its own due to COVID issues. The Highlanders’ games for December 27 and 28 (vs. Long Beach State) and January 1 and 2 (at UC Davis) are already cancelled.
Thus, Hawai’i at UC Riverside on January 8 will be the first conference game for both teams … should it remain on, as scheduled.
It is also worth noting that four of the five scheduled Big West series for December 27 and 28 are being cancelled due to COVID issues.
Per Big West Conference guidelines announced before the start of this season, cancelled games during the regular season will not be rescheduled.
