A night to remember

The University of Hawai’i basketball team’s 76-75 win over UC Davis on Saturday night was memorable for so many reasons.

Of course, the game-winning 3-point shot by Eddie Stansberry in the closing seconds that kept the Rainbow Warriors in first place was reason enough. But for the 4,669 in attendance at the Stan Sheriff Center, there was much more that made it a night to remember.

• The game was promoted as a “A Celebration of 100 Seasons” of UH basketball, and dozens of former players and coaches were in attendance, including all five members of the legendary “Fabulous Five” group from the 1970s. The entire alumni group was recognized at halftime, and a few others who could not attend were featured in videos on the scoreboard screen.

• Former head coach Riley Wallace traveled from Las Vegas for the game, and sat on the baseline near the bench as the “honorary captain” for the night. Wallace was the UH head coach for 20 seasons, and has a record 334 coaching victories. Current UH head coach Eran Ganot was the Director of Basketball Operations for Wallace in 2006-07.

• New UH football head coach Todd Graham was introduced to the crowd during a timeout, and he led an impromptu cheer of “Go!” … “Bows!” … “Go!” … “Bows!”

• The UH players wore pink shoes and socks, and the UH coaches wore white sneakers with pink laces as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer’s “Suits and Sneakers Week” to help raise awareness for the American Cancer Society. The Rainbow Warriors also chose to honor Mary Buggs, who passed away from cancer-related complications in October 2019. She is the mother of team captain Drew Buggs.

• Hundreds of the fans in attendance stayed after the game to collect autographs and photographs from the team.
