Warriors will host Ball State on opening day of Diamond Head Classic


The University of Hawai’i will face Ball State on the opening night of the 2019 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The brackets for the three-day, eight-team tournament were revealed on Thursday.

The Hawai’i vs. Ball State game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center on December 22. It will be televised on ESPN2.

The Rainbow Warriors finished 18-13 last season, including 9-7 in the Big West Conference. They return four players with starting experience in guards Drew Buggs and Eddie Stansberry, and forwards Zigmars Raimo and Samuta Avea.

The Ball State Cardinals finished 16-17 last season, including 6-12 in the Mid-American Conference. They return three starters, including 6-foot-8 forward Tahjai Teague, who averaged 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior last season.

Other first-round games on December 22 are Houston vs. Portland at 10:00 a.m., Georgia Tech vs. Boise State at 12:00 p.m., and UTEP vs. Washington at 4:30 p.m.

Second-round games will take place on December 23, followed by the final day on December 25.

  1. Looks like it will be a good classic with teams that will test the Bows. Would like to see us win this one. I believe we will have a better team than last year but we still need to find that “go to” guy. Maybe he is already on the roster. Can’t wait for November. Was actually glad to see they cancelled the Summer League. Too many injuries in the past.
