Warriors end Down Under Tour with loss at Sydney

The University of Hawai’i basketball team gave the professional Sydney Kings all it could handle for three quarters, but faded in the final quarter of an 82-65 loss.

It was the fourth, and final, exhibition game of the 2018 Down Under Tour for the Rainbow Warriors. Thursday’s finale (Friday in Australia) was played at Abbotsleigh College in Sydney, Australia.

Junior college transfer Eddie Stansberry scored a game-high 15 points, and senior forward Jack Purchase (who is from Australia) added 14 for the Warriors. Brocke Stepteau scored 11 points, and Drew Buggs contributed seven points and eight rebounds.

Hawai’i trailed 38-29 at intermission, but got as close as two points midway through the third quarter. The Kings pulled away in the fourth thanks to a 12-0 surge.

Hawai’i finished the Down Under Tour with a 1-3 record in exhibition games.

The Warriors are scheduled to return to Honolulu on Saturday morning.
