UH teammates Raimo and Thomas lift Ultimate Roofing in HD League

A long day of workouts was capped with a victory in the Hawai’i Development League for University of Hawai’i teammates Zigmars Raimo and Brandon Thomas.

Raimo (24 points) and Thomas (22) combined for 46 points to lead their Ultimate Roofing team to a 102-82 victory over Society Contracting in the second game of a HD League doubleheader at Manoa Valley District Park Gym on Tuesday night.

“I like this league a lot,” Thomas said. “It’s good for everybody to come out here and get better. I’m getting to run some point guard, so it’s real fun. And the team is real cohesive after only one game, so it’s really fun.”

Ultimate Roofing improved to 2-0 in the summer league, with Raimo and Thomas sparking the latest win after a late arrival for the 7:30 p.m. game. Earlier in the day, the UH basketball team had physical training, individual workouts, an open gym run, and a team dinner. Raimo and Thomas arrived at Manoa Valley gym a few minutes after the summer league game started (along with Drew Buggs, who was on the opposing Society Contracting squad).

“The way (summer league) helps me, I’m trying to focus on getting my defense better and my ball handling,” Thomas said. “For me, just being able to guard good players all the time, and just always trying to be on the best players, guarding them, and running pick-and-rolls a lot with Zigmars, and just getting comfortable dribbling the ball, that’s what’s really helping me.”

Buggs, the returning starter at point guard for the Warriors, scored six points in the loss for Society Contracting.

In the first game of the summer league doubleheader, Hooters defeated Island Movers, 106-98. Hawai’i players Samuta Avea (Island Movers) and Dawson Carper (Hooters) were unable to play due to the IUH team activities.

The HD League will continue this week with games on July 4, 5 and 7 at Saint Francis School gym.
