Warriors starting strong in Big West

Believe it or not, the first quarter of the Big West Conference regular season is complete. There are still three quarters, or 12 games, of the conference season remaining, but the University of Hawai’i basketball team is faring well early.

Hawai’i is 3-1 and in a tie for second place. Cal State Fullerton (4-0) is the only Big West team yet to experience a loss in conference action. The Rainbow Warriors and Titans will meet on January 27 in Honolulu, then again on March 3 in Fullerton, Calif.

This week, the Warriors play just one game – Saturday against UC Davis at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Aggies are 11-6 overall and 2-1 in conference. UCD, which represented the Big West in last year’s NCAA Tournament, is currently the conference’s top-rated team in the RPI at 61. By comparison, Hawai’i is at 198, and Cal State Fullerton is at 110.

Prior to the trip to Honolulu, UC Davis has to play a crucial home game on Wednesday against Long Beach State. The 49ers are currently tied with Hawai’i for second place at 3-1.

Fullerton has two road games this week – at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, then at Long Beach State on Saturday.
