Warriors appear in latest “bracketology” projections

With first place come some spoils. For the University of Hawai’i basketball team, a recent surge to the top of the Big West Conference has led to some attention.

In particular, the Rainbow Warriors are now showing up in the projections for the NCAA Tournament, otherwise known as “bracketology” to college basketball fans.

In the ESPN version – “Bracketology with Joe Lunardi” – Hawai’i is listed as a 16 seed, to face 1 seed Virginia. In the CBS Sports version, Hawai’i is projected as a 15 seed to face 2 seed Xavier.

Of course, these projections mean very little for now – especially for a conference such as the Big West. It appears the prognosticators generally look at the weekly standings for the Big West and put the first-place team into the projected bracket for that week. For example, Cal State Fullerton was showing up as the Big West representative in the bracketology reports last week, and UC Santa Barbara was in before that.

The official Big West representative for the 2018 NCAA Tournament will be determined at the Big West Conference Tournament at Anaheim, Calif., March 8-10.

As of now, the Warriors are sitting atop the Big West standings with a 4-1 conference record (13-5 overall).

For the second consecutive week, Hawai’i will play just one game this week. The Warriors will host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday in yet another crucial Big West game.

Fullerton is 11-7 overall and tied for second place in the conference at 4-2. The Titans host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday before heading to Honolulu for Saturday’s game.

Saturday’s game is part of a UH basketball doubleheader at the Stan Sheriff Center. The UH women’s team will host UC Riverside at 5:30 p.m. Fans with tickets to the UH men’s game can arrive early to watch the women’s game.
