Next four games are at home

Did the schedule-makers of the Big West Conference do the University of Hawai’i basketball team a favor this month?

The Rainbow Warriors will play their next four conference games at home, and those games are spread over a period of three weeks. After going 1-1 on the road last week – a loss at Long Beach State followed by a win at CSUN – the Warriors will spend the remainder of January in Honolulu.

If Hawai’i is to prove its worth as a contender in the Big West, a successful home stand this month is vital.

The Warriors will host Cal Poly (6-10 overall, 1-1 BWC) on Wednesday, then UC Santa Barbara (12-4, 1-1) on Saturday.

That will be followed by Saturday night home games against UC Davis (10-5, 1-0) on January 20, then Cal State Fullerton (9-5, 2-0) on January 27. UC Davis and CS Fullerton happen to be the only teams that have yet to suffer a loss in Big West play.

Extended home stands are not exactly new for the Warriors, who had a five-game conference stretch at the Stan Sheriff Center last January. Hawai’i went 3-2 in those games last year, and eventually finished 8-8 and in fifth place in the Big West.
