A look at some early rankings

Based on the preseason list for the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings released this week, the University of Hawai’i is expected to improve this season.

Hawai’i checks in at 206 (out of 351 NCAA Division I teams) in the preseason list. While that might seem to be a modest ranking, it is an improvement from the end of last season, when the Warriors finished the regular season at 269.

More noteworthy, Hawai’i ranks second among the nine Big West Conference teams in the current preseason Pomeroy Ratings. The Big West teams check in at:

192 – UC Irvine
206 – Hawai’i
231 – UC Santa Barbara
256 – UC Davis
262 – Long Beach State
270 – Cal State Fullerton
276 – Cal Poly
288 – UC Riverside
319 – CSUN

And here are the preseason rankings of the other UH opponents (in order of schedule):

228 – North Dakota
149 – Troy
73 – Nevada
NR – Adams State (NCAA-II program)

MIAMI AT NO. 12 IN COACHES TOP 25

Miami, which will face Hawai’i on the opening night of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on December 22, is ranked No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll released this week.

USC, which is also in the Diamond Head Classic, is ranked No. 11.

Among other teams on the UH schedule, Nevada received one vote.
