Meet the Warriors: Zigmars Raimo

img_0100

As a true freshman from Latvia, Zigmars Raimo understands that his learning curve with the University of Hawai’i basketball team is just beginning.

“I’m a freshman, so my role is not like a big leader on this team,” the 6-foot-7 forward said.

Although he might not yet be looked at as a “big leader,” he is one of the few healthy “bigs” on the roster, so his playing time could come sooner than expected. It is a role he welcomes.

“I will support all my teammates and help on the court,” he said. “If I will be (playing) on the court, I will give my all.”

Raimo said he is adjusting to the American style of basketball practices, as well as college courses.

“University is a little bit higher level,” he said. “It’s tough on the court, but I am slowly getting used to this basketball type, and I love it.”

Raimo’s first language is Latvian, so he is focused on improving his English, and eventually wants to major in Business or Economics.

If there is something that Raimo is taking a quick liking to, it is the Hawai’i weather. His family and friends in Latvia are currently enduring temperatures in the 30s, and it will get even colder there in a few months.

“I will be really happy in December here,” he said.

  1. Welcome, Zig
    Sorry you’re getting out of shape for Cold Weather; yes, be careful@ Sandy’s and with mopeds…

    Zigmars (along with Ido Flaisher) True Freshmen among the youngest talents at Under-20 Euro Championships;
    Zig reminds me (a lot) of Petras Balocka who joined UHMBB out of JC, had a 20-20 game, physical, one of the best rebounders all-time with easy range to three — under This C.Staff with emphasis on rebounding and shooting, Zig ‘should’ really flourish…

    I’m really liking the Buy-in of this staff’s recruits; there’s nothing to resist, or fight about; the coaches are smart, the players are smart And Mature, egos on ‘stun’; the system works and works to the benefit of all, is very watchable and super-fast-paced;

    Similar to the football pre-season “predictions”
    (tough job to measure “heart”–
    NOW UH Projected as a Bowl Team)
    Based on What? NO Starters/Returnees,
    UH already @159 –predicted 16-11, 9-7 by kenpom…
    I expect some steady climbing

    GO ‘Bows!
