The postseason begins this week at Big West Tournament

The regular season is now over. Let the March Madness begin.

The University of Hawai’i had one of its best regular seasons in program history, posting an overall record of 24-5. That includes a 13-3 conference record that was good enough to earn a co-championship in the Big West Conference and the No. 1 seed for this week’s Big West Conference at Anaheim, Calif.

The Warriors closed the regular season with a disappointing 74-72 loss at Long Beach State, but they will have the advantage of staying in Southern California, instead of returning to Hawai’i, to prepare for this week’s tournament.

Of course, this week represents a whole new slate, as the win-and-advance structure of the conference tournament does not allow for second chances.

Hawai’i is scheduled to face the No. 8 seed, Cal State Fullerton, in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (Hawai’i time) at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The Warriors swept the home-and-home series from the Titans, though neither victory was particularly easy.

In an 86-79 win at Cal State Fullerton on January 16, Hawai’i needed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to force overtime. In a 76-59 win over the Titans in Honolulu on February 13, the Warriors relied on a second-half surge to pull away.

Should the Warriors beat Cal State Fullerton for a third time this season, they would then play the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals. The choices would be No. 4 UC Santa Barbara, No. 5 UC Davis, No. 6 UC Riverside, or No. 7 Cal Poly.

A potential meeting between No. 1 Hawai’i and No. 2 UC Irvine or No. 3 Long Beach State cannot happen until the championship game.

The winner of the Big West Tournament will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hawai’i, as the regular-season champion and No. 1 seed, has already secured a spot in the NIT, should it not win the Big West Tournament.

Here is the tournament schedule (note that the times listed are Pacific Time, and Hawai’i time is two hours earlier):

  3. The Bows really set themselves up nicely for the first round. It’s good that we’re having a few days to rest up and prepare. Thursday can’t come soon enough for me though!

Let’s go warriors!! It’s your time!!!

  4. If it’s your first time to the Honda Center, parking is usually cheaper at JT Schmidt’s restaurant across the street. The food is really good there too, but you don’t have to eat to pay and park.

    Go Bows!!

  5. You worked wonders to earned this once in your lifetime privilege.

Here’s the opportunity to create a legendary success with UH MBB.

May Lady Luck be with you all the way!!!

  6. Janks or Rod for POY!

Bows will need to come out ready and take care of business from the get-go.

Those new to the Honda Center will want to dress warm and, yes, parking can get quite expensive. The food is good. I recommend the pizza

Speaking of dress, here is what is planned for games:
    1. UH fans are to wear black/Hawaii will be in white uni’s/Fullerton in blue uni’s
    2. If we go to game 2, UH fans are to wear white/Hawaii in white uni’s
    3. If we go to game 3, UH fans are to wear green/Hawaii in white uni’s

    Go Bows!!!

  7. KelleyO: Thanks for the parking advice. I’ve never been to the Honda center but am pretty familiar with the Anaheim/OC area.

DaBoyz808: Are the shirt color coordination an official thing that is being organized or was that your suggestions? Only asking because if it’s an official thing I’ll have to buy a white UH shirt (I only get black and green ones)

Also, This is my first time going to a road game and I’m going up by myself. Is there a section already unofficially reserved for Hawaii fans in the Honda Center? I have general admission tickets but does anyone know where the Hawaii fans will be sitting that already got the UH allotment of court side seating?

Also, looks like the weather is pretty cold this week in Anaheim. I still cannot find an affordable UH sweater/Jacket down here on Oahu. Anyone here on Oahu know of any stores that get deals or what, haha? I tried checking K-mart close-out specials in Iwilei but only had small size (I stay one XL or XXL) I also checked the H zone but they’re a rip (sweaters cost about $40) None of the Ross’ stores get. Does Walmart or Target get?

  8. go bows congrats to all players including those back at UH

  9. Congrats to Coach Ganot, Janks and Valdez.

  10. If you haven’t already heard, The Big West Conference has just announced that Stefan Jankovich (Janks) has won the Player of the Year award and Coach Ganot has won the Coach of the Year Award.

Here is the list of the full all-conference awards.

  11. Kaneohe97 – It is an official thing that is being organized. You may hear more about it from people familiar with the DOBO. Section 223 is where UH fans have been sitting previously and our tickets for this tournament are for this section.

Layer it up! undershirt, long sleeve shirt, covered with the shirt of choice. If you have been to the games, you should have the straight out of manoa shirt, the white out shirt, and they will be selling the black conference champions shirt at JT Schmidts on Wednesday night.

Costco has the most affordable jackets around. $20. They may have a few left and keep you very warm. Don Q has some good UH apparel for sale too.

    See everyone on Thursday.

    Go Bows!!!

  12. Cheehoo! Thanks Daboyz808!

I’ll be checking out Costco and Don Q today. I fly out tonight, redeye, so not much time to prepare, haha. I’ll also be going to the JT Schmidts on Wed night but I already bought my black conf. champs shirt at the H-zone store. Just need a white UH shirt and a UH sweater/jacket.

I’ll be looking for you guys in section 223 at the Honda C. Got my signs made and ti-leafs packed 😀

  13. I’ll have red label (“heart of a warrior”) shirts for sale in green, black, and white at Honda center or in the area, if anyone needs…daboyz and I both…it’s the shirt that a lot of the players wear, as the team had it special made/ordered themselves at the red label shop…limited sizes and quantities
