SPOKANE, Wash. — Melo Trimble scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Diamond Stone added 14 points this afternoon to help Maryland defeat Hawai’i, 73-60, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

A sellout crowd of about 11,200 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena watched the Terrapins — seeded No. 5 in the South Region — improve to 27-8 and advance to Thursday’s Sweet 16 matchup against top-seeded Kansas in Louisville, Ky.

Mike Thomas scored 19 points and grabbed 11 boards and Stefan Jankovic added 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Rainbow Warriors, whose record-setting season ends at 28-6.

UH led for most of the first half and was up, 41-39, after Quincy Smith’s layup with 11:21 remaining in the game, but that would be the Rainbow Warriors’ last field goal for the next 7 minutes, 29 seconds. Maryland took advantage of the drought to run off 14 straight points during one stretch, building a commanding 53-41 lead after Robert Carter’s three-point play with 8:26 left.

The Terrapins extended it to 57-43 on Tremble’s two free throws with 5:56 remaining, and Hawai’i could not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Maryland led 28-27 after a tight, methodical first half in which Hawai’i led most of the way but again was plagued by early foul trouble, as starting point guard Roderick Bobbitt picked up two fouls in the game’s first 3 minutes, 14 seconds and was sent to the bench.

Still, the Rainbow Warriors led, 10-4, after Stefan Jovanovic’s short banker with 12:40 remaining, and 13-6 after Aaron Valdes’ 3-pointer from the left with with 11:03 left. The Terrapins then responded with a 12-2 run capped by Trimble’s layup which gave them an 18-15 lead with 6:24 remaining.

Maryland extended the lead to 24-20 on Jake Layman’s 3-pointer from the right wing with 4:03 left, but UH answered with a 7-0 run culminating in Jankovic’s putback with 49 seconds remaining to put the Rainbow Warriors up, 27-24.

The Terrapins then closed out the half with Trimble’s layup at the 35-second mark and then two free throws by Trimble with 5.6 ticks left.

  3. They gave it their all and that’s all anyone can ask for. Too bad many shots didn’t drop for us but that was true for Maryland as well. If we could have hit a few threes it might have been a different outcome but great effort regardless. I’m still proud of this team for their accomplishments and for the excitement they brought to Hawaii. It’s gonna be tough next year with so many unknowns, like NCAA appeal pending and possible player losses, but I hope Ganot can recruit some really good players.

Mahalo Rainbow Warriors for a great season !!!

  4. THESE LAST 24 Teams…

EVERY ONE Ends Their Season with a Disappointing Loss
    (Except One)

Feels Like Sweet 16 Ticket was ‘Primed’ for us
    (Maryland was SO Vulnerable
    Trimble Gets TOO Many Calls…)

  5. This wasn’t our best game by any stretch of the imagination… But what a year!!! Really proud of the way this team represented our state on and off the court.

Thank you to Rod, Q, Sai, and Dyrbe for all the memories. Much respect for sticking it out when you could easily have chosen greener pastures. Warriors for life.

  6. Thank you, UH Men’s Basketball TEAM for an amazing season, for staying together and for your tremendous EFFORT TO THE END! You made the entire state of Hawaii proud.

It was such a tough loss because we all know we could have, should have won. They didn’t play a good game, but unfortunately we didn’t play our best game either, NOT for lack of EFFORT! We clearly out hustled them, CLEARLY, which makes me bummed because it makes me feel like we DESERVED to win more than them!

I think we should have gone to that zone in the second half, since they were struggling on their three point shot, and we really looked like we finally hit the wall and looked weak in our legs. But what do I know. Big shout out to Mike the BEAST who really showed up today!

Love these kids! Thanks Warrior Insider, it was fun.

  7. t was a record breaking season –
You are the best team statistically.

Hawaii appreciate your hard-work and effort!

  8. Great game Bows, thanks for a fun year

  9. Great year for the BOWS !!!!!! I think the 31 freethrow to our 15 spoke for itself! Great season best ever for Hawaiii!

  10. Mahalos for the amazing season ‘Bows! It was a tough loss, and as many pointed out earlier we are better than we performed tonight. The game was decided at the free throw line and they got there twice as many times as us.

Thanks to the seniors especially for all the memories, and bringing pride back to the islands this year!

    Go ‘Bows!

  11. Warriors: Thanks for a record-setting, historic season. It was a great ride, from the summer league right through the NCAAs. You truly restored pride to this program.

And a special mahalo to the Schmidt ohana, Dayton and Wes.

  12. I’m going to miss the seniors! I hope everybody comes back next year!

I’m so happy and proud to be a Rainbow Warrior fan!!

You can’t win them all.. We played against one of the best teams in the nation who
Pretty much made all of their free throws. We could of one it.. But not this time.

Thank you to all the players, coaches, and fans.. Who are the best in college bball!!!

Looking forward to next year! I want to see Zach and Brocke get stronger and work on their
Game. I see a lot of potential there!

    Let’s go Bows!!!!!!

  13. Quincy expression on his face summed up Rainbow Warrior Basketball program his past 3 years:Always fighting till end. Anything to get wins.Quincy most inpirational for past 3 seasons and for basketball fans. No matter ncaa ruling . He and others part of 70 wins over his career!
    Great job team
    Good support
    Give team a break ncaa.
Great Aloha for best UH men basketball in history so far.
Ganot go get good recruits like Rod. Q.Sai and the whole team Team first!! And thanks to battle tested leader .we know! Go Bows!!

  14. I think Terrapins agressive to rim even only making one 3 ponter. Then Maryland fantastic freethrow shooting.Bows had to make every one of the 15 attempts.Kind of story of game.plus terrapins inside must of had several blocked shots and alters. Great season Oakland Rod .we glad he helped team get 50 wins and to last 24 in field. Bows really will miss Rod and Q.

Thanks to Eran and team first Bows!!

  15. It was a great and enjoyable ride. These young men did an incredible job.
Thanks guys and thank you Coach Ganot for your excellent coaching.
    Go Warriors!

  16. Win the appeal! Everyone but Rod/Q/Sai coming back, recruit some outside shooters plus adding Purchase, Owie Wowie and Buggs and this team will be in contention to be in the sweet sixteen again next year. Crossing my fingers the NCAA throws UH a bone and lets them win the appeal soon.

  17. ^^^everyone not coming back lol
    Not a chance

  18. But great season. Proud of the team. Proud of the players, proud of the coaches, and proud of the fans that showed up thru thick or thin and cheered their hearts out!!
    Thanks for the ride warriors!!

  19. Amazing and record setting year that captured the hearts of basketball fans.

  20. We live and die with our Warrors. A season forever to remember We live our team. To you seniors , you are Warriors Forever !!

  21. Not the result I wanted but what can you do it wasn’t meant to be the guys gave there all the shots didn’t go down
Thank you for an amazing season

  22. Great season. What a ride!!

  23. Warriors thank you for the great memories. We get’um next year.

  24. It was a bad time to go cold and that run by the Terps and they had control after that. That’s basketball. This game is about runs. Good shots didn’t fall. I said we needed to shoot the ball well to have a shot and we didn’t. The free throw disparity also killed us. Still, it was a hell of a season, the best in UH history. Thank you Coach Ganot, the coaches, the players, the trainers, and the fans that got behind this special team. Looking forward to next year.

  25. Congratulations on a great season. Much thanks to the players who did a remarkable job through all the adversity thrown at them. It was an enjoyable season and very fun watching the team play.

Also acknowledgement to Gib who recruited all these players except 2. To Benji who kept the team together for another year. To Ganot and his staff for retaining the players except 1 and doing a fantastic job with them. To the players who stayed and experienced what was an opportunity not too many get a chance at.

Now the question of how the Amanda hate on Gib will play itself out for the future. Can Ganot be a better recruiter than Gib? It is apparent that Ganot is a better tactical coach than the last two, however recruiting is the life of any college sports program.
