UPDATED: Long Beach State hands Warriors first conference road loss, 74-72

The road sweep attempt by the University of Hawai’i basketball team hit a road block at Long Beach State.

The 49ers rallied in the closing minutes to earn a 74-72 victory over the Warriors in the regular-season finale at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.

Nick Faust scored on a driving layup to tie the score at 72, then Travis Hammonds made two free throws with 9.3 seconds remaining to give the 49ers the win.

Hawai’i dropped to 24-5 overall and finished the regular-season atop the Big West Conference at 13-3. UC Irvine also finished 13-3, and is officially considered co-champions with Hawai’i, but the Warriors already secured the No. 1 seed for next week’s Big West Conference Tournament at Anaheim, Calif.

Long Beach State improved to 18-13 and 12-4, including a sweep of the home-and-home series from the Warriors.

“Tough finish in a tough place to play,” head coach Eran Ganot said. “Wish we came out of this one. Proud of our guys because they expect to win these games, and it just didn’t come out for us in this one. There are things we could have done better, myself included, so we’re going back to work.”

The loss ended a school-record seven game road winning streak for the Warriors. Hawai’i still finished the Big West regular season with an impressive 7-1 road record – the program’s best road mark in 37 years of conference affiliation.

Aaron Valdes led Hawai’i with 19 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Roderick Bobbitt added 17 points and six assists, Quincy Smith scored 13, and Stefan Jankovic contributed nine points and 13 rebounds.

The Warriors rallied from a 13-point deficit in the first half, and led by as many as 11 poins midway through the second half. Hawai’i had a nine-point lead with less than six minutes remaining in the second half before the 49ers rallied.

“Obviously, I was very proud of our guys to fight back, and not just to fight back, but have a 20 plus point swing there,” Ganot said. “The (rebounding) again hurt us, especially early.”

Tummala3_LBS_Haraki

Long Beach State grabbed 41 rebounds to Hawai’i’s 35. In two losses to the 49ers, the Warriors were out-rebounded by a combined total of 88-63.

“We’re not very good when we lose the boards,” Ganot said. “We’re 22-0, or something like that, when we win the boards. They took the fight to us. And obviously, settled again for too many 3s … One of the best things we do is get to the (free throw) line and we shot half as many free throws as they did.”

Hawai’i was assessed 27 fouls to Long Beach State’s 19. Most notable, the Warriors were called for 18 fouls in the second half to the 49ers’ eight.

As a result, Long Beach State went 21 for 32 on free throws, while Hawai’i went 12 for 16.

The 49ers raced to a 28-15 lead with 8:57 remaining in the first half, but the Warriors later went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 30-27.

Long Beach State eventually took a 37-36 lead at intermission, but the Warriors opened the second half with a 14-5 run to take a 50-42 lead.

Hawaii had a 69-60 lead with 5:48 remaining, before LBSU rallied in the closing minutes. Two free throws by Faust capped an 8-0 surge by the 49ers that cut the Hawai’i lead to 69-68 with 3:57 remaining.

Hawai’i took a 72-68 lead on a jumper by Sai Tummala with 2:56 remaining, but the Warriors would go scoreless the rest of the game, shooting 0 for 5 from the field during that stretch.

A driving layup by Faust tied the score at 72 with 1:17 remaining. Both teams had turnovers on their next possession, and Hawai’i had possession of the ball with 35.5 seconds remaining after LBSU’s Gabe Levin was called for an offensive foul.

Valdes missed a jumper from the baseline, and Tummala was then called for a foul with 9.3 seconds remaining while going for the rebound.

Jovanovic1_LBS_Haraki

Hammonds responded by hitting two free throws to give the 49ers a 74-72 lead, then Jankovic missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key on Hawai’i’s next possession. Roschon Prince missed two free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining, but Hawai’i could not get off a final shot after that.

Faust led the 49ers with 19 points. A.J. Spencer added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Justin Bibbins had 11 points and six assists.

“They were hurt. I’d be more worried if they weren’t,” Ganot said of his team. “There’s an expectation, and we didn’t come here to have some moral victory. We’re disappointed; perspective is everything. We came here to get this done and we didn’t.”

The Warriors will remain in California for next week’s Big West Tournament at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Hawai’i is scheduled to play Cal State Fullerton in a quarterfinal game at 12:30 p.m. (Hawai’i time) on Thursday, March 10.

  1. Great effort. Best college basketball game of day. Congratulations to coach of year and 3 year great run warriors. Big West tourney up for grabs. Team rest up recharge get. 3 wins and dance ncaa. NIT second mission.Big West going be dogfight. Hundreds we wish can go to Honda center. We will cheer from home!! Great year not over guys. Good job Eran and staff!!

  2. Tough game today. There were a lot of crazy calls by the refs….AV was just on fire!! Interesting how the season played out with us beating Irvine twice, Irvine beating Long Beach twice and Long Beach beating us twice. I still like our chances next week. Coach Ganot will get the boys ready for the Tournament. The team will bounce back and take us to the promised land AKA the NCAA Tournament!!! On to Anaheim!

  3. Shake it off fellas.. We all know you can beat everybody in this conference.

I like are chances going into the tournament.

    Bows will always bounce back!!

  4. Another tough loss to take, but good to see we’re hitting from distance once again. It gives us something going into the tourney, but damn this L really stung being up 11 in that second half.. I was wondering if the box score is available to see the free throw and foul differential, they were in the bonus with 11+ mins remaining. Oh well, lets pay em back in the tourney!

    Go ‘Bows!

  5. The team came out after half-time and showed signs of their mid-season brilliance tonight, I thought. But after about six minutes we seemed to hit a wall. I don’t know if fatigue set in, or frustrations with the refs. Sometimes I get frustrated when this staff allows other teams to go on long runs and our team clearly gets dismantled and we don’t call a timeout to slow it down or make corrections. I also hate when, at the end of the game, we play the equivalent of a prevent defense in football on offense. We slow it down and run time off the clock and wait til 13 to 10 second to set up for one shot…and then we miss the shot! Argh! That’s how they got back in the game! BUT…I’m not a 24-5 Division 1 Coach of the Year, that’s for sure! If it worked, I still wouldn’t like it but I wouldn’t say anything, ha!

Moving on…Anaheim. There’s only one game that matters and that’s on Thursday. We gotta win on Thursday. That’s all we need to talk about. Focus focus focus. Go bows. From here on out. Just like next man up. Next game up. The game in front of you is the only game.

    Go Bows!

  6. Well, Gary Dickman has repeatedly said that UH loses only one game every month. I’ll definitely let this be our March loss.

  7. Matlin should give Eran and staff hefty raise. Eran several year extension. Very good . excellent year for young coach with good veterans and united team. They be ready. 3. Wins more warriors!! 49ers thought they would collapse. Good effort too. Set DVR or get on plane to Anaheim. Get it warriors! NCAA prize invite. Believe!!

  8. Take your wife and 2 teens.

  9. You pay the tab? We go. About 20 of us. No just kidding. We watch frome home take time off. Team can win it! Wahine senior nite special come on down fans send off soecial wahine . Laura. Another great year ncaa goal too!

  10. Aloha to great wahine seniors!

  11. 24-5 . Nothing to be sad about. Warriors win next 4 games in a row set all time win mark modern era at 28 and maybe more. That is big time!!

  12. islandman,

    haha!

  13. Eran and staff onward to the tournament. Hope coach checks out CIFchampionship playoffs tonight at the Honda Center. Chino Hills got some potential Warriors. Number 0 and 3 and 2. Also a freshman number 11 to keep an eye on.

  14. Team 1st were are the bloggers I’m still waiting Ganot recruits did nothing to impact the game.
Folks are bias talent win ball games in the clutch . I forgot this is a UH blog.

  15. WOW this was just sick to watch, I’ve been to 6 road games out of 8 and every one of them have been horribly officiated!!!! But tonight this ones a Black eye to the league, it seems to me that it’s a $$$$ thing, there is No-way a team can go 18 minutes with only committing 5 fouls, I mean the total count for second half was 17 fouls Hawaii 7 fouls Long Beach unbelievable, at DAVIS earlier this week I checked the foul count at halftime of that game and it was 12 fouls Hawaii 5 fouls Davis! now somethings wrong with that picture. Then on top of that a fan comes over to the HAWAII side and jumps on top of one of our fans and starts trying to hit him, The police did nothing Long Beach security did nothing !!! Crazy Just Crazy! Bring on the tournament and pac 12 refs !! 24-5 regular season I’ll take it!! Just Win Bows!!

  16. Pac 12 refs for Tournament? Good to know! Yeah, you try to say refs making bad calls both ways and refs don’t lose the games and we had our chances, etc., but COME ON! At a certain point it becomes RIDICULOUS and it does change the whole complexion of the game. Like those maninini calls against Bobbitt last game that put him on the bench for so many minutes. How can you say that doesn’t change the game? However, I think our kids did GREAT with it, maintained their composure, fought hard. These kids deserve to WIN!!!

Big Daddy, Sai is playing with a lot of heart and definitely contributing, and he is Ganot’s recruit. Love your kid, could use him for sure, but glad to see he’s still rooting for his teammates.

    Go bows!

  17. Hey BD , people make choices in life. . If you got nothing good to say don’t say it. You don’t need to come to this blog , go on another if you want to whine and complain. Many student athletes transfer every year. Good luck in finding another school. You no longer have to be compelled to come on this site. Aloha means good bye.

  18. Bigdaddy sounds like a bitter parent of a former player. Be positive or stay home.

  19. I think HAWAII had over 150 fans show tonight ! Great Job

  20. Good effort. Now let’s get ready for the Big West Tournament.
    Go Warriors!

  21. There was a lot of home cooking in this poorly officiated game.

  22. “My freshman year, I wanted to start. I felt like I deserved to start, but I didn’t. And then, you have a lot of people in your ear, telling you, “Oh you’re better than this guy. He might be ahead of you, but you’re better. You’re way better.” But [the coaches] are not playing you because you’re not ready to play. That’s the truth. You have to trust in your coaches and keep working to get better and get ready to play. … But don’t listen to people, your family members, your friends … they want what’s best for you, and like that’s the worst thing. You can’t have family members telling you things that you want to hear. … But the reason why the coaches don’t play you is you’re not ready. You have to wait for your opportunity to come and take advantage of it.” – Buddy Hield

  23. Free throw totals: 12-16 UH, 21-32 LBSU, they shot twice as many free throws and we lose by two…Man, I’m still bitter! lol Hopefully this loss lights a fire under us for the tourney!

    Go ‘Bows!

  24. I’m at the Wahine game and we’re kicking butt; up by 25 with 2:42 left in 3rd Qtr. So the ladies will get the bye and play on Friday! Also, they were all out of the black Large Big West Championship Shirts already! Only had white. Said they might get more tomorrow. Why black and white? No green in either of them. Trying to decide what to wear for Thursday’s game.

  25. Pono ,lol never bitter wish the best for the team analogical speaking wish the best for team.
Convince me they can win the tournament without him Ganot choice.

  26. bigdaddy, I miss Isaac as much as the next person but to sit here and say that his decision to leave was ALL Ganot’s fault is a bit misleading. Whatever they disagreed on, no one was willing to compromise and one side just left the discussion altogether, did he not?

There’s no doubt Isaac is prob more talented and exp. then Drammeh, but he made his decision and he’s not here anymore so…Why should you even care? To drag your personal vendetta into the public?

  27. Team1st, taking your son and grandchildren ?

  28. From a UCSB poster on another board : “You do know those aren’t just Big West refs, right? They also ref in the WAC, MW, WCC and Pac 12. We all have the same crews.”

  29. Team should go to Disneyland or Universal studios theme parks. Get mind off loss for awhile. I do not think they will stay in hotel for 5 days. Last time I think they got refocused for 3 game run .True need 8 guys score 5 to 18 points. Maybe 5 guys in double figures. Have to , have other players step up Big West Tournament time gut check time. Seems like all 8 teams go for it!! Great venue!! Just joy of hoops!

  30. Looked at boxscore last 2 games. True about that. SD and NF have to makeup loss of near 10ppg. Eran can acheme. Needs players to score and get stops. Probably why last 2 games so close in scoring either win or loss. Go Warriors. Cliff is right . Tough athletic teams can push and score challenge for warriors. Team fight back!!

  31. No one can replace Fleming. Give his 10 ppt and D and we win this game. Any of you fools say we can replace with the other two backups got to get your eyes replaced. I am not a homer just because big daddy is on this forum. I just call it like it is. Does anyone realize we playing 50% ball the last two weeks? It isn’t any big surprise why ok. Team clearly headed in the wrong direction. Coach too stubborn to realize it. In this day and age coaches live and die with their talent. Fleming and Janks the most talented players hands down. If you don’t agree then check your eyes or you don’t know bball. Not a Ganot fan right now. Hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt it. He’s doing this all with Arnold and Benji recruits. Am I wrong? Didn’t think so…

  32. Start Fleming and his ppg goes to 15. Wish him luck in going to a high major or better school and making a difference. He isn’t no Shamburger. He got legit talent and mark my words we won’t win the conference tourney because coach let him walk. Dave Reardon would agree…anyone hear him on BC’s show?

  33. the808 you mean Fleming the guy who abandoned the program when we needed him the most? Yeah, that was so clutch! lol I’m sure he, bigdaddy, and you are relishing in this defeat, talk about team players…He’s gone, he don’t give two s__t’s what anyone here thinks! Using his departure as a reason to hate on Ganot shows you care more about one individual getting red carpet treatment than the program as a whole. I guess to each their own though..

  34. the808,

Ganot has done more for this team than Fleming. Everyone, even Fleming, improved from last year. Fleming’s ppg, apg, and rpg were all up and he only got one technical this year as opposed to almost one every other game from last year. Fleming is definitely talented and could have contributed, but it was his decision to leave, not Ganot’s. Fleming may have more talent than Shamburger but they both have selfish attitudes, little patience, big egos, and little foresight. In any case, I’d rather have players who are 100% committed, respectful, and coachable than players who are 100% talent and nothing else. Hopefully Fleming can mature during next year on the bench. I expect him to be playing for a Duke or UConn next year, and for him to make a huge impact his junior year of college at the age of 23.

  35. But yes, after two years of playing for a top-25 team on the east coast, Fleming will undoubtedly be much sought after by the NBA just 1 month shy of his 25th birthday in June 2019.

  36. IIRC, nearly everyone who posted on this blog thanked Isaac for being a Warrior and wished him well in the future. In journalism, every story has a shelf life and his expired after several days in which emotions were running high. For better or for worse, and we’ve heard arguments on both sides, he isn’t coming back. Time to move on.

  37. clyde,

I agree but it’s only right to defend one’s team from people who make negative remarks on it. and i should add that i defended isaac’s perspective right up until the end. he wasn’t getting playing time and didn’t feel like he could get his way with Ganot so he decided to leave. can’t really blame him for that. but the timing was wrong and his decision not only impacted Ganot, but his teammates as well. and now you have isaac’s dad just affirm that Isaac’s decision to leave two days before the end of conference play was to make a gamble and basically say ‘watch, this team ain’t gonna make the conference tourney. they probably won’t even beat davis or lbsu without me.’ i feel like isaac made that decision thinking it wouldn’t really affect him because he’s posted on social media that ‘too many schools want me’. anyway, it’s especially shameful one reflects on all the support isaac has received from Uh and its fans: 2 years of college tuition paid, travel expenses, the life long experiences… pretty shameful.

  38. Clyde, I agree as well. I just can’t stand the amount of criticism levied upon the coach and program. We have a 24-5 season and go 7-1 on the road in conference and are BW co-champs, and some people here are blaming Ganot for literally everything that goes wrong. The amount of shade thrown on coach would make you think we went 8-8 in conference and have lost 12 games overall like we did last year, lol smh

Loyal to the soil, Go ‘Bows!

  39. Both parent and player never bought into the program and team concept and it’s probably why things ended up the way it did. Fleming is an “Iverson” type.. and Iverson, as good as he was, ended up abandoned by the NBA because of his unwillingness to take a backseat for the good of the team. Fleming’s a great talent, but he may be someone who just wants to score 20 points a game regardless of record. As for BD, there was always expression about him not supporting the coach, his staff selection, diversity, style of play, and how he would’ve told Fleming to come home even before the first game was played. Well, you got your wish… maybe there’s a good east coast team that’s looking for an isolation ball in his hands type of player.

BD, as a TEAM, we’ve done pretty well, so I think, as others have mentioned, you may need to just stop watching your son’s former team that you never truly supported. No need to throw any kind of disrespect trying to backhandedly say we lack “talent” without your son… or Ganot didn’t want him. He stopped following the team gameplan (which got him those 10 ppg) and that’s why he’s gone.

Yes, it’s time to move on. Could Isaac have helped the team yesterday? We’ll never know. Why are we not killing teams? Heck, the more you play, the more you get scouted… they’re adapting just as we adapt to them. You can’t attribute it to just Fleming or Ganot. In fact, Ganot and the teams’ ability to adapt after poor halves is why we’ve seen success on the road up til yesterday.

I’ve seen a few negative comments about Sheriff (one of “Ganot’s recruits”). I think he’s one of the key reasons we’ve defended so well over the last month. He’s not taking or making shots, but the charges and positioning on defense have been great for the most part. Sai, also key. But hey, who cares who recruited who… they’re all Rainbow Warriors, Big West Champs… and that’s all we need to be in order to become Big West Tournament Champs.

  40. Aloha Warrior Insider ! Interesting posts from the game vs. LBSU in which I was there personally !

Bottom line UH played their asses off against a talented team in Long Beach State. 49ers are athletic with their bigs who can go out and create their shots while being deceptive around the basket. Valdes and Faust put on a show of GREAT plays in crunch time situations. Only difference between both teams is that LBSU has a deep bench and can give up fouls in which UH can’t. The game was exciting and lived up to it’s billing of two outstanding teams going at it every minute on the floor. What helps UH considerably they don’t have to deal with LBSU as they are in the lower bracket with Irvine. Regular season is over and it’s now tournament time as Fullerton is what it’s all about with 3 days to prepare!

UH got a taste of what big west tournament officiating is going to be all about. Some good calls and a lot of bad calls. The bottom line you have to play through it as it is going to get more PHYSICAL when the tournament starts next week. At this time of the year all teams know each other with the superior talent stepping up and rising up to the occasion. Survive and advance is what it is all about in 3 days !

    Go Bows !

  41. The Beach boys tried hard to give the W to us but –
The Supreme-court judges wanted to show that “Who’s The Boss”!

    Last chance for “Money Time”?

  42. Who Does Hawaii play 1st Round as long as it’s not Uc Davis, Irvine or Long Beach we have an easy sail to the chip….. If we play them oooooo god

  43. Tavs, slow down fella to much emotions with know facts. Asuming is for ……..!!!!!
Isaac love UH he may walk on and play football as a defensive back.

  44. Isaac an may now stay at UH and play football? Now I’ve heard it all.

  45. Quincy does not mince words: “They just outplayed us,” Smith said. “A lot of their guys played really good. They hit tough shots, got rebounds. We couldn’t get (any) calls, made stupid plays at the end. A lot of things didn’t go our way, and that’s why we ended up losing by two points.” (SA, 3/6/16)

As regarding Fleming, IF it is true the coach was going to ask him to stay back from the road trip, then that’s not Isaac quitting at this important time so much. Reading some comments, maybe he didn’t follow some rules though like being on time, etc. and that’s why he received less playing time. Earlier, he was playing quite a lot .

  46. Report from fbiwarrior on another board who was at the game:
” I was there and only witnessed one incident where a LB fan grabbed a wig off a Hawaii fan. Hawaii fan put him to the ground to get his wig back. Female police officer was there quick and escorted the LG guy away. I thought the LB fans were great and they had a good atmosphere. The refs sucked ____ and played a big part in LB coming back and winning the game. “

  47. Isaac too talented on the bball court to waste that on football imho. But just imagine him as a wideout with those hands…Rolo – you reading this?

  48. Regardless team now needs to replace that punch hat Fleming brought off the bench and the best they can do is Drammeh. Bigs we got some talent off the bench but we in trouble at guards. Tournament will be interesting but honestly because I believe the team is in a downward slump I am not expecting much. Smart move to put in a bid to host the NIT.

  49. “…also was a two-time all-state cornerback for the William Penn football team…helped lead the team to the state football championship game as a junior” per Isaac bio on hawaiiathletics.

  50. According to football recruiting sites Delaware puts out zero football talent. They only have one 3 star recruit in the class of 2016 and only 5 rated players in the whole state according to 247.

  51. The purpose of this blog is to support the UH Men’s Basketball team. Am I right or wrong? I want all of you to ask yourselves right know, if the team had only 4 victories and 25 defeats would it even be an issue to scrutinize the coaching staff, the players or the fans? The last time I checked, this particular site was for the fans… true fans! Like the fans who travel near & far to see this team play. Fans who sport around in their Rainbow Warriors gear regardless of the season. TRUE FANS!!

Regarding the team’s play, looking back on how this team began the year, there wasn’t any difference how they both started the season. Both coaches had to overcome obstacles to no fault of their own. Ganot has stepped up to the plate and rose to the occasion. His record speaks for itself. Regardless of who recruited who, Ganot has proven his style of coaching suits the players. Congratulations to the 2016 Big West Champions, Isaac Fleming included.

  52. Plus one Oakland , see you in Anaheim , thank you for being a positive force for the program and their student athletes . Comments spewed by disgruntled parents who should know better are unfortunate. Support the team , if you don’t like the program, choose another school to support or attend. That also applies to Cp 3 alias Team 1st .

  53. Here’s another way to look at it. Ganot is Big West Coach of the Year and we’re not done yet. IF he could’ve figured out how to have somehow brought Isaac Fleming into the mix, dealt with his style and ego or whatever, MAYBE he would be National Coach of the Year and we’d be a top 25 team. MAYBE. Ganot is 34 years old. I’m pretty freaking happy with our record and what Coach Ganot has done to reign the team in and with court strategy (mostly, lol). I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t leave Hawaii for greener pastures soon enough, and he will remember this team and these players Isaac included) as the greatest launching pad and learning experience a coach could ever have to a career. MAYBE.

  54. KellyO.. Coach or player, who the heck would ever want to leave Hawaii lol

  55. Coach of the Year, etc announcements due on Monday, i think.

  56. and the voting was done around March 1, i think, so yesterday’s game should not have affected the voting.

  57. To play devil’s advocate:

It’s nice to have the regular season championship and the great record, but we had a powderpuff pre-conference schedule overall (especially compared to last year) and the team hasn’t gotten wins when they truly matter (post-season), YET.

Last year we were 2 minutes away from the big dance. This year, we have an upperclassmen dominated rotation (most talented under class man left), and the expectations are that we make the big dance by winning the bwt tournament; we haven’t accomplished the most important, and season-defining goal yet. Until we get there, I’m not going to drink too much of the Ganot Kool Aid just yet. Learned that lesson from Norm Chow.

I believe that Gib or Benjy would have been very successful with this upper classman heavy rotation as well, but I’m going to reserve my opinion on Ganot’s coaching ability until after the results are in.

The proof is in the pudding. Can Ganot lead the team to the promised land?

  58. One thing stands out. Warriors make run in tournament either couple of key guys carry team or 8 or 9
As a unified group get wins. True BD. new coach guys not huge scorers yet impressive as Team they got 24 wins so far. My concern.depth? Frontline guys getting worn down. Tournament time Other guys step up. Cliff is right with calls and Physical nature of confetence tournament. It will be Really Intense. Only strong survive. Warriors miss Fleming and near 10ppg scoring and Defense? No question. However 2015 run they went to “ship”with Negus playing 4 and 5 spot. Warriors all up to them. How hungry? Good tournament! Anyone can win it all!

bigdaddy. Football for Isaac? Better start training now! UH fans appreciate all present and past warriors and rainbows who gave their all. Thanks again. Go Warriors get the “Ship”!!

  59. You taking your teens or your son ?

  60. Warrior08.

That was fair summary. These recruits tremendous athletes. Been together either 2 or 3 years 20 win seasons back to back. I think Ganot knows that. A real headstart to his first year. Whomever they had as coach. With veteran team in Big West would win. Ganot is appreciative. We shall see. NIT home game good. Guys want NCAA dance. For sure. March Madness. This is most talented 7 or 8 we have seen in years. Ganot lead them to promised land and one victory? Historic!
    Love March NCAA games!!

  61. Recruiting? Did not know 4 juniors being openly recruited by other schools. Tough with appeal in limbo. Just enjoy ride fans. Special team!!

  62. Already won the Big West regular season championship, better than last year. First regular season championship in 14 years.

  63. 4th seeded UNI won the MVC tournament. Wes Washpun, most outstanding.

  64. 8-8 this time last year!!! I’ll take the 12-4 1 seed this year
And remember now the coach was offered the job last year but he wasn’t thinking bout the kids or the school when he said NO. He was thinking about his pockets. So to me I think we got the better deal.

  65. Thanks Oakland510 for being a true supportive parent of a student-athlete.

RC: your post sums it up well.

Islandman: lol. Your posts always crack me up.

  66. We appreciated Nevels and Jawato. They were the added extra firepower last year. When both suffering from injuries during conferece play probably cost warriors similar 12 or 13 wins league play.. and top 2 seeds. Just think. Team just fought held on. We thank allparts. One share. 22 or now 24 wins is good!
all the program past years did great. Hope team just concentrate on getting NCAA bid. No distractions. Enjoying season. Go Warriors!

  67. Yes Oak510 ! Right on !

  68. Yes, thank you (again), Oakland510. Perhaps some people’s lives are so miserable they’d rather wallow in the past than live in the present. It’s their choice.

BTW, Rod’s defense on Bibbins after the first four minutes really helped turn the game, and gave the Warriors a chance. They had so many open shots in the final four minutes — a couple of uncontested 3’s, a layup off a fast break, a tear-drop runner in the lane, a pullup jumper on the baseline (when a foul could have been called) — and none of them dropped. But that’s how cruel this game can be sometimes. Gotta regroup and move on, which I’m sure this team will do because it has done so the entire season.

Here’s why I feel the regular season title is undervalued when compared to what’s at stake in the conference tournament. Stetson could win the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament today by beating Florida Gulf Coast but not represent the conference in the NCAA tournament because it is not eligible.

Then, in an odd twist, regular season champion North Florida, which lost to FGC by 33 points in the semifinals, might get the NCAA berth over FGC. Totally bizarre.

  69. I don’t know how people can write that Benjy or Gib would have done the same this year. We’ll never know but I DO KNOW that Ganot has done an outstanding job with deck he was dealt. All you can do is play the hand you’re dealt the best. 12-4, first conference championship in over a decade is quite an accomplishment. On top of that he is one of the youngest coaches and gets paid a salary that ranks in the middle of the conference. We have one of the best up and coming coaches and he wants to be here in Hawaii. You also can’t compare EG hype to Norm since Norm never won in any season. Ganot has accomplished a lot in a short period of time. I agree whole heartedly with Oakland all the people throwing out these hypothetical scenarios about other coaches are not true fans. Why can’t you enjoy what we have which is a BW championship team entering the tourney with the #1 seed and we have all our players back healthy.

  70. Hey fans. Present or before. The wins are great. Young ones . our family. Yours. Team or fans happy. Football has to match Basketball in excitement. Does not matter the driver owner of car. Destination goal reached most important. We been spoiled. Maybe Fulerton prep next topic. Or team funny videos. Much respect for bigdaddy and Oakland. All parents. Sons produced great ride to Dance so far! We happy! Not complaining. ! Go Warriors!!

  71. Just wasting bandwidth discussing Fleming and family. Time for the Fleming family and UH program to move on.

  72. The facts show that 2 years ago our conference record was 9-7. Last year 8-8. This year 13-3. Truth is we have been middle of the pack for many years with the only chance of a postseason bid was to win the automatic bid. Good coaching for the most part, Senior leadership, and overall team play has us where we are. Long Beach and Irvine are pretty good teams, and with the exception of the one game they were all competitive. I agree that we should enjoy this great season. We still have unfinished business! For the constant complainers about coaching, schedules, players……… sit back, relax ,and enjoy the ride, and let the kid enjoy this season. We are not 5-24!!! ,

  73. Go Bows!

  74. Fullerton guards . concern. I like Titan’s coach. Interesting to see chess match between Ganot and Taylor. As Rainbow Cliff mentions athletic push teams give warriors problems. Fullerton has those 3 or 4 bigs who are muscle. Not scorers. Bangers! Wish game was tomorrow. !Warrior time!! Stop Tre Coggins and the other 2 guards!

  75. We lost because Long Beach shot the ball better from 3. they outrebounded us by 6 and they converted more free throws. We again got in foul trouble. Tummala was 0-5 from 3. He makes one 3 and I think we win that game. His year percentage is over 40% from 3. We needed to get the ball inside more to Janks. In the end, we didn’t get the one key play that would win it, but I’m not unhappy. This team came back again like I thought they would and they almost pull it out, again!!!!

I don’t like us starting out so slow lately. That’s been a trend. We can’t always pull it out in the end as we have seen. Now, the team has another chance to do something special or settle for the NIT. We have to cut the turnovers down, be smart with the fouls, rebound well, and make shots. If we can do that, we like our chances. Let not make excuses that Issac isn’t here. He’s gone, done, no need to talk about him anymore or the prior coaches, can’t even remember their names anymore. What matters are the coaches and players, and rabid UH fans that are continuing to fight and support each other towards a common goal, which to to make it to The Dance. Just take care of business, 1, 2, and 3. It won’t be easy, but everybody has to be on the same page. Stephan Jankovic needs to establish and be engaged early inside, Valdes need to make a highlight dunk or 2 to light up the bench, Tummala need to make a couple of 3s, and Thomas needs to stay away from several stupid, cheap fouls. Everybody needs to contribute that plays. Now is a good time to start dominating like they were at the beginning of the conference schedule.

  76. Derek…don’t know who saw my post at end of last article so I’m gonna repeat. Plays like…

Steal by Q…pass to Bobbitt who dribbles down court, behind the back pass to Q who dishes to Sai for the DUNK!

BAM! That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout, baby!!!

    GO BOWS!!! BEAT FULLERTON!!!

  77. I like where this is going! Go Warriors!!!

  78. After warriors do some damage in ncaa or nit dances. Wish coach Ganot and staff give hint who they targeting recruits for next season. Four twenty win seasons in a row? That is good any level. Hard to do at UH. Thst is why Hawaii basketball getting national recognition.First. win against Fullerton. Yes inside out rebound finish play smart. Still live loha. Play warrior! Eran is one of very few young great tactician coaches in ncaa. One day he might have son play for warriors. Keep this train moving. Big West Tournament. Have to love. Any given team any given day .ncaa invitee! Warriors year!

  79. Dream, dream, dream, that’s all I have to do!

    TEAM rebounded… winning 3-1 by March 11, 2016 –
    #1 Fullerton.
    #2 Santa Barbara
    #3 Long Beach.

    Double-champs:
    move-on forward ???

  80. Not too fast on giving the hc and asst coaches raises. This team was not their team. The only player currently playing that he recruited is SD.

After this season, the proof will be in the pudding to see how well he and other coaches can recruit and rebuild after loosing 2 seniors, IF, and possibly 3 out of 4 jrs. Not t mention the reduce is scholarship.

All the talk about IF and most of you don’t really know the real story. So speculate all you want. Yes it may appear that he abandoned the team and it also appears that the coaching staff could’ve done a bit more to positively coach this player. The idea of getting the players involved with taking him under their wings could’ve saved him.

Otherwise, this team has been struggling of late and will need to find ways to get back in the groove. Starting games by being down by 9 to 11 points can have a psychological impact and hard to recover from. They have done it all season and can get back to that winning form.

Big game Thursday. Sure that the Bows will be ready to play. Many Hawaii fans will be in attendance.

  81. Just my opnion, I don’t think Long Beach can beat Irvine. I see Hawaii getting by Fullerton, and I see us playing Santa Barbara 50-50. That game can go either way. SB is playing very well now. If we get by there, it will be up for grabs again with Irvine. It’s hard to beat anybody 3 times in a season.

  82. Mr Bill.

I guess we get too excited. Team did well several years culminating with Big West regular season co-championship. You are right I think Sai Tummala was looking for grad school to have 5th year and apply for medical school. I guess technically through contacts like asean schroeder with football grad transfer. Wondered about that. Sheriff only freshman or jc transfer actually recrited by Ganot and staff. Cornelisson a walkon. Purchase D1 RS transfer. Team could look really different next year. In effect big coaching recuiting test for Eran and staff. They did well!! Well enjoy Anaheim.and stay hopefully till Saturday. Warriors no question swagger. Will be ready!! Warriors just win.Ganot guide them well coach!!

  83. Derek

8 wins in a row for Bob William’s Gauchos! They are hottest team right now. Going be really exciting games.
Irvine just got by riverside. The conference tournament all teams 0-0. Warriors get it!

  84. We cannot hide it. Deny it . Eran playing with house money. Someone got called away from poker table. Took over his hand holding royal flush. Great recruits veteran team tough winners ready to double down bet.
Eran he always mentions appreciate team he has and how hard they fight. Recognize what he has. Okay no raise yet. That is good. Glad he guided so far team to great things. Okay wr wait. Go warriors!

  85. Is BD really asking this team to prove to him they can win the tournament without his son? Does he support this team or not? I’ve defended Issac on the few times I’ve posted here and also on the Hawaii scout board. But the more of read BD’s posts….the more TURNED OFF I get! Smh

  86. Issac and BD,
You got what you wanted when you announced leaving….you got the fans, the press, the front page of the sports paper on you. Whatever happened between you and the staff….it is what it is. Its time to say Aloha and A hui Hou and let it be already. Move on cause we are all ready to do so at this point.

  87. Mr Bill …. Sai counts as a recruit for Eran too. He’s currently playing and we’re losing three seniors. Did you lose a wig on Saturday ?

  88. Dayton can we reign in Team 1st / UHF from taking over this board again with his numerous posts back to back. He’s doing what you asked him not to do.

  89. Islandman – I got it back.

    You should’ve said hello.

  90. Crash the boards, stop relying on 3 point shots..Take it when we have it..and feed Janks on the bottom..He’s a weapon down there..When we were winning it was because we were feeding him more…They double then kick it back out…We need a strong start in the beginning and not fall behind by so much….Also we need to defend outside of the three line better and stop giving up 3’s….Box out too! .I have a good feeling that we will be ready for this tournament..Go Bows..I have all the faith in you guys!

  91. lets not criticise the players doesnt matter who recruited them, they all have a role in the team. look at the Hawaii 50 group as an example, little or no court time but full commitment boys have done very well and all 15 (inc isacc) should be proud of what the TEAM has achieved

  92. After a long season and UH teams being the most traveled, fatigue of the mind and body does affect one’s ability to perform at its optimum. They may have the best mind over matter kind of attitude but the reality is that their road travels at the end of the season and post season if any is quite unique. Not using this as an excuse the basketball team has this battle to deal with that no team on the mainland has. Thus find a way to reenergize your mind and body to focus at your optimum level and win the next 3 games.

  93. Mr Bill – I got mine back too. I hope that all of you who can will be there for these next games. I got on this board to see what it was all about. Give these guys a chance & they will grab for it. We got some really bad call & no call at the LB game, but did good. It sucks that they have to travel so much, but for the most traveled they have the best record ever. I hope to see lots of fans there on Thursday. I wish I could make the other games, but I have to work. GO BOWS!!!
