Warriors need to rebound on road
If anything, the University of Hawai’i basketball team is now fully aware that it needs to be ready for every game in the Big West Conference. The combination of a UH home loss to Long Beach State and a UC Santa Barbara road win at UC Irvine last Saturday was more than enough notice.
“Just staying together right now is the big thing,” junior forward Aaron Valdes said. “It was a frustrating game for us. We just have to stay together out there. I know the guys are talking; everybody’s good right now, so we’re excited to get back out on the road and get another win.”
Hawai’i, which is 16-3 overall and 5-1 in the Big West, will get a chance to bounce back from its worst loss of this season when it plays a road game at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday. The Gauchos are coming off a 76-60 upset of first-place UC Irvine.
The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. (Hawai’i time) at The Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, Calif. A live video stream will be available on www.bigwest.tv.
The Warriors beat UCSB, 65-57, at the Stan Sheriff Center on January 9. The Gauchos are 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big West, but their four conference losses were against first-place UC Irvine (once), second-place Hawai’i (once) and third-place Long Beach State (twice).
Sophomore guard Isaac Fleming scored 22 points in UH’s victory over UCSB last month, but he will not be available this time due to an ankle injury. Valdes played just the first four minutes in the UCSB game before leaving with a turf toe injury.
Valdes struggled in a limited return to action as a reserve against Long Beach State last week, but is expected to be back at full strength – and perhaps in the starting lineup – this week, in Fleming’s absence.
“They’re very poised,” Valdes said of the Gauchos. “They hold the ball, they don’t turn the ball over that much. They got good shooters in Vincent, Green and Bryson … we just have to attack them defensively and move the ball.”
Junior forward/center Stefan Jankovic continues to lead the Warriors in scoring (15.1), rebounding (6.3) and field goal percentage (.558). He had 19 points and nine rebounds in the previous win over UCSB.
“Overall, they’re just a well-coached team,” Jankovic said. “They run their offense, they play good defense, they have a good 4-man (John Green) who was out against us and is back playing, so they’re an improved team, and a tough team that we can’t take lightly. We’re playing on their home court, so that’s even more boost for them.”
Senior point guard Roderick Bobbitt is averaging 13.1 points per game and leads the Big West in assists (5.4) and steals (2.3); junior forward Mike Thomas has been averaging 9.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game since conference action started, and senior guard Quincy Smith is averaging 9.7 points and 3.2 assists per game in Big West games.
UCSB features the Big West’s leading scorer in 6-foot-4 senior guard Michael Bryson, who is averaging 19.2 points per game. He scored 16 points in the first game at UH, but shot just 5 for 12 from the field, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range.
Gabe Vincent, a 6-3 sophomore guard, is averaging 13.3 points per game and leads the team with 47 3-pointers. Sam Beeler, a 6-10 senior forward, is averaging 6.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, and has an impressive .744 field goal percentage but a not-so-impressive .231 free throw percentage.
John Green, a 6-5 senior forward, is averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He did not play in the first game at Hawai’i due to a knee injury.
The Warriors will be looking to rebound in more ways than one. Long Beach State out-rebounded Hawai’i, 47-28, last week. UCSB leads the Big West in rebounding at 38.0 per game, while UH is second at 37.1.

Although UH is 2nd in rebounding if you count all games, they are only 6th in rebounding in conference only games.
UCSB is 1st in both overall and conference rebounding stats. LBSU is 7th in overall but 2nd in conference rebounding. LBSU had a tough non-conference schedule including currently ranked or receiving points teams, UCLA,Oregon, Arizona, Virginia, Duke, and San Diego St, so i would think rebounding stats are affected by playing those teams. UH played Oklahoma . ..
I’ll be honest…I don’t expect UH to win this game. Despite the record, they have not been playing the best ball as of late. Valdes is still coming back from injury, Fleming is out, and Santa Barbara seems to be healthier than the last time we played them. Prove me wrong, Bows! Either way, I fully intend on tuning in via bigwest.tv and cheering the team on. Keys to victory: Take smart shots, don’t make dumb fouls, hustle for rebounds and take care of the ball. I definitely feel like we could pull off the ‘upset’ but it really just depends on how hard the team is willing to go. Let’s GO BOWS!
Win the Rebounding battle by good margin, AND all guys going to line.. every single guy has to hit 85 percent or better.. UH got exposed.. they don’t hustle , and box out.. battle for every rebound, they lose,.. they miss 12-14 FT’s .. FREE points at the line, they can lose by 14..
That is the exposed UH team.. If They cannot rebound, and hit FT’s good percentage, any team from LBSU to CSUN can beat them.
Who wants it. .should make for physical match.. PLUS. still CONCERN.. 4 guys coming off the bench for UH.. are not really even honorable mention, . all USA top 300 DI talent.. after that first 6 athletic guys.. UH is still so very thin.. no leader. and scorer in crunch time..
And Ganot, his rookie eyes are showing, getting an ulcer.. Have to , by committee with staff. get guys to buy in .. to win. that bickering, cussing each other out.. Ganot.. sees that happen again amongst himself or the team.. during the game.. Bench those guys for remainder of game, send them home.. or even Eran.. step back and let Adam take over more of the on court Coaching. AND the discipline of players.. so critical.. that is WHY the staff was brought in .. NO PROBLEMS>. just win !
Rebounding is a very over rated statistic when comparing teams so no need look at those numbers. Rebounding is different for every game due to pace, defense and other factors. UH is a good rebounding team that had only one very very bad game on the boards and that was against Long Beach. They not terrible rebounders all of a sudden.
Lets hope and pray Valdes is back with his true hops so he can help on the boards and be ready to play extended minutes with Fleming out.
Some people jumping off the ship already after just one bad loss! This team going lose couple more games just like every other team in the Big West but just have to ride it out and hope you still winning the race at the end.
Another tough road trip for the Bowz and Isaac will be missed.
There is no real outstanding team this year in college ball, but Oklahoma sure comes close. If we can play with that kind of desire and determination, we can beat anyone.
Was it just me or did anyone else get the feeling that interview with Niko and Janks was aboard a boat!? That would be the Jock Sway.
GO BOWZ
“In the ice bath taking care of his little buddy.” Is that what he said?? Hahaha!
Off-topic,Rolovich thanked many involved in the recruiting process including the sponsors like the hotels, restaurants, car rental company, coaches, the current players, strength coaches, trainers, the band, cheerleaders, Matlin and yes, Amanda and he named the whole compliance staff by name.
He named the student-athlete services and academics people in the department.
Darn! Irvine hits a 3-pointer with one second left to send the game into overtime, then outscores Poly 15-9 in OT to win 78-72. Poly could have won in regulation, but hit 1 of 2 FTs with four seconds to play, allowing Irvine the opportunity for a game-tying 3.
Football has to go .500 or better, no matter coach , athletes or staff..we are tired of losing football team..
Winning brings happiness
Mx. Paterson had very good counsel. And friends.
MBB.. going to take on new dynamic look..different type of athletes..

Irvine win huge on road win against Poly..tonite..
Good comeback win after Irvine home loss against UCSB..
love it!! BWC , any given day, any team can beat the other..
Warriors gotta get 2 wins stay close to Irvine in standings..
🙂
Let’s get back to that ‘starting strong’ and maintaining, and just get used to playing with and having enough of a lead that games don’t come down to last second shots.
Go Bows !
Sounds like I’m a Poly fan. No. Not saying that CalPoly needs to start fast. Just the Bows. Just remembering what Coach Ganot mentioned a few times earlier in the season about our team. I’m still not worried about this team, but that of course leaves little to talk about. So you provided the chance to worry about CalPoly, and I jumped. Don’t want to get in that situation.
I see I posted that at 4:25AM. It’s PM here where I am, not AM. Go Bows !
I agree with the last post start fast go inside or attack the basket put teams on their heals early .
I triple the out of the gates fast! Aaron being at his best would really help with that. Isaac said we’ll be fine without him but we sure we’re a better team before we had to start going so many minutes as deep as we have to our bench. I hope Sai didn’t make any “doctor visits” this week and had his head in basketball instead of in, you know, his future! Lol. Go bows!
Can Gauchos coach Bob Williams, scheme something to slow down Janks? I think that is UCSB greatest concern, not too many, if ANY teams in the league have a guy that size with that skillset to stop Janks down offensively. Unless, like LBSU. have those smaller guys pester and frustrate Janks, just get a body on him, hit his arms , wrists, bump him, and get him to complain and in foul trouble,. Janks stays OUT of Foul trouble, and out of dog house with Ganot, Janks will go off for 28 points, 14 rebounds 4 blocked shots, 4 assists , 2 steals etc.. and lead UH to victory. For me, Janks is the key, the big, the only real big time difference maker.. Otherwise. Niko goes off for 30? Or sheriff? maybe.
Chuck, what do you mean rebounding is an overrated statistic? Teams with good rebounding statistics will be better more consistently. UH had one bad rebounding game, and let’s hope that’s their fluke of the season, as it ultimately ended up being their downfall. UH was their own worst enemy last game:
FG: 35% (46.6% season avg)
3PM: 24% (6 for 25!!!) (32% season avg)
FT: 58.8% (67.1% season avg)
Outrebounded by 19!
And yet, they still had a chance near the end to get back in it. UCSB is a confident team but if the Warriors play like the team they’ve been most of the season, I like our chances!
Let’s GO BOWS!!!
IsaacM, what I mean is that it is not good to compare the season rebounding stats when teams play each other and think that one team is better at rebounding than the other just by that statistic. Teams that play slower can get less rebounds because there are less shots but that does not make them a bad rebounding team.
If you looking at just the stats for one game then rebounding is important like how UH got beat up on the boards by Long Beach. Like I said before every game is different so hard to say that one team is better rebounding than another if you only looking at their season stats.
Do you know who lead the country in rebounding? Quinipiac! Do you know who is second? Texas Arlington! Maybe I am wrong but I don’t think those teams are ranked or will make any noise in NCAAs.
Looking for Valdes to come through tonight and help make a difference. Appears that there will be no live streaming available from the Big West website. What a small line conference we have. No streaming No live TV only radio.
If you use the conference only games stats, you can get an idea of the relative rebounding ability of the Big West teams against each other because they play each other instead of looking only at the overall stats which reflect the different non-conference schedule opponents that LBSU and UH have, for example. LBSU had a far tougher non-conference schedule.
Quinnipiac plays in the Metro Atlantic which includes Monmouth who is rated No.7 in the Mid-major poll. Texas Arlington, in 4th place in the Sun Belt, is ranked 20th in the Mid-major poll. The Sun Belt has Arkansas Little Rock, ranked 4th in the Mid-major poll.
Quinnipiac and Texas Arlington both had stronger SOS’s than UH.
However, you can’t always tell how a team is doing by looking at rebounding stats. Virginia is ranked No. 9 in the AP Poll but is No. 323 in NCAA rebounding at 32.4 reb. per game and is No. 13 out of 15 in ACC conference games at about 28.
Jjay… thnks for the info. So only can watch the Wahine on Big West TV today ?
The streaming link is still up on both the UH Athletics schedule and the Big West TV page.
(It may be the primitive single-camera coverage, but better than nothing!)

Uhf1 … these are the players (with the stuff) that the former coach recruited, like you always say.
islandman:
Shake my head? Ganot brought in clean house, new mindset, new offense, new atmosphere and clean image, team bought in , flirting with top 25 ranking.. after only ONE loss at home. then team has problem with a few guys? key guys? I don’t get it…Ganot HAS FULL support of admin, and chancellor.. Well, IF GA and BT guys cannot toe the line, with new HC. then move on. at my age. I just WANT the guys who want to win. for Hawaii here. just get to ncaa dance, and all this pilikia goes away !
Apparently, you can’t just rely on recruiting “talent” to win or be successful.
If Eran Ganot actually told Bobby Curran that he told two guys on the team “there’s the door” than Eran Ganot is an idiot. After Ganot came out and basically said part of being a leader is taking responsibility and we were exposed and I take responsibility…and then he tells a talk show radio announcer he called out two guys…how does spreading that kind of vague information help the team? People start speculating and naming players and don’t know who those two people are and create stories and belittle certain players and negativity builds. That stuff needs to stay in the gym. If he’s trying to get better control, great, good for him. Spreading stuff around the media is the worst way to do that. Again, if I question anyone at this point it’s Ganot and his maturity. The kids may have had a breakdown last week because the coaches haven’t done their job of reigning them in…part of a coaches job when dealing with college kids. These kids have proven themselves to me over a year and a half. UHfanzonly1 “has full support of admin and chancellor”…ha! What? Coming from you? Come on, man…that only means he’s a puppet, that’s not a GOOD thing!! Lol.
And there’s a lot I like about Ganot and I don’t necessarily believe he actually said this to Bobby or didn’t say it off the record. I don’t know so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope it all comes together for the team’s sake. Go Bows!
I heard Curran on the radio this morning, and he didn’t use those words “there’s the door.” He referenced that Ganot had spoken to a couple of players, only a part of which was basically to remind them that he is, after all, the head coach. If I recall, Curran (through Ganot) mentioned a couple of incidents from Saturday’s game in which a couple of players were upset that he subbed them out. I was at the game, upstairs behind the bench, but I did see one player turn toward Ganot and said something before taking a seat. BTW: This same player was re-inserted into the game later.
Frankly, Curran should be careful of what’s shared between he and Ganot. It’s very unprofessional for a media person to share closed-door information to the public. Maybe it’s time Ganot cut him off; I would if I were the coach.
I heard the interview with Bobby Curran this morning, and while I could be mistaken, my impression was that the tough-love “There’s the door” wording was Bobby Curran’s paraphrased interpretation of what went down, rather than a direct quotation from Coach Ganot.
I hope someone else will step in and clear this up. (Ripcurrent, the master of meticulous transcription?)
No where does it say that Eran told Bobby that. In the other forim, it only relates what BC said the coach said to the players.

Chill Pill time.. hey I am on YOUR SIDE.. it is Sarcasm.. Ganot hand picked, part of agenda, or whatever, clean house, get rid of Gib and get In Ganot..
Would take team to next level, and in a good? way..
That is the admin, President, BOR, hoopstalkers, Chancellor, AD, etc, Power that be.. they have problem with MBB? It FALLS SQUARELY on UH admin.. they are reaping what they have sown.
Remember Benjy? NO support from UH admin and Powers.. he almost takes team to NCAA tournament. Ganot WITH full Support of Admin? Now what.. team going to IMPLODE?
Doesn’t make sense.. kids are alright.. the Power/ the UH admin. AD have made and new Coach huge mistakes. still can go to NCAA dance, however going to be tougher.. have to BE like Benjy and the Bows.. Team against the world.. TOGETHER.. one Ohana
KellyO , I like how you express what is on your mind.. my thoughts. I like the team, the upper level . people. have made some mistakes. maybe a lot.. ..

Sorry without Isaac I meant*
Tough win on the road tonight. Warriors prevail. Some blogger and he knows who he is continues to throw eggs on the program and then ask for mercy from Val and Dayton. No mercy. Execute him from the Insider.
