Warriors have one more tune-up before Big West
Before the University of Hawai’i basketball team can turn its attention to Big West Conference action, it must first host a visitor from Washington, D.C., and it’s probably not the one you’re thinking of.
The latest who-da-guys on the UH schedule is Howard University, which is a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team based in D.C. The Warriors and Bison will meet in an earlier than usual start at 5:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Hawai’i women’s team will host Penn at 8:00 p.m., and all fans who attend the UH-Howard men’s game can stay for the women’s contest.
Hawai’i is 10-2, including 10-1 in the Sheriff Center. Howard is 7-7, including 3-6 on the road.
The Bison made a trip to Las Vegas last month for two games, but have otherwise not ventured past the Central Time Zone. They will come to Hawai’i after playing a game in New York (loss at Columbia) on December 28. The Warriors, meanwhile, have been at home for the entire month of December.
As cited in the previous post, the Bison have the nation’s leading scorer in 5-foot-11 junior guard James Daniel III.
Although he takes most of the team’s shots, he is not the only weapon. Damon Collins, a 6-5 junior forward, is averaging 11.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game; Solomon Mangham, a 6-7 junior forward, is contributing 7.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
It should be noted that the Bison will be without two key starters. Marcel Boyd, a 6-10 center who is averaging 8.5 points and 9.4 rebounds, has missed the last three games with a fractured finger; James Miller, a 6-4 guard who is averaging 15.0 points per game, also has a fractured finger and has missed the last eight games.
Hawai’i is expected to be at full strength, and will offer a more balanced attack. Aaron Valdes is averaging 15.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game; Stefan Jankovic is averaging 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game; Roderick Bobbitt is averaging 12.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game; Isaac Fleming is averaging 10.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
The Bison’s seven victories have not come against any significant opponents, but it has played several notable road games, namely losses at then-No. 11 Purdue (93-55), UMass (85-79), Rutgers (82-70) and Central Michigan (72-52).
After this game, Hawai’i will have just three days to prepare for its Big West opener against Cal Poly on January 6.

Let’s Go Bows! Let’s Go Bows! Let’s Go Bows!
May 2016 take Hawaii to play at where the sweet 16’s do!
Looking forward to another dominant performance by our boys. 2016 is going to be a good year for UH basketball. Let’s go bows!
score: UH 165 Howard 75 a real rout.
Daniel III.. shooting guard form Bison? he will only score 18 points
Bison go back home…earn lot of money for 18 road games though..
Aaron Valdes needs to have a haircut. I think he plays better when it’s short.
TO Warrior Insider ‘Ohana:
The Best-Connected, Most Committed And Knowledgeable UHMBB Site…
HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU!
HAVE A GREAT, Happy, Healthy And ÜBER-SUCCESSFUL 2016 Year AND SEASON!
——————
To Be Clear…
For ME, that Would Mean:
1) As A Minimum: QUALIFYING For the NIT:
Similar to Na Wahine Finally Breaking Through to WIN,
Better, DOMINATE, The Big West Conference
[I Hope We Get a GOLDEN Invitation to Join The WEST COAST Conference
Where Big Boys Play AND PAY Their Own Way.
Not Pick-Pocketing Free Trips to Hawai’i —
Just Like when We Used to be Fully Equal Conference Members
[Merry Belated Christmas, Dave Matlin!]
2) Of Course — Better Will Also Mean
Beating The HOTTEST BWC Teams Three Straight
So WE ARE The Hottest
Then Carry ALL These HOT UHMBB Players Past The PROGRAM’S FIRST, Second, etc…
NCAA TOURNEY WINS … How Deep A RUN ?… So DEEP We Embarass The NO CLASS AT ALL Old Boys As Much as UHWVB Did (Or Better) … So THEY Take REAL Heat (CBS, ESPN, Our Hawai’i Congressionals, etc, — So Far In-State Politicians Next-To-USELESS–for Recommending Post-Season Ban and Recommend (Almost on their Own) to Back Off of That B.S. P.S. Ban ..
WE CAN Dream….
AND Maybe This Team & Staff CAN Stand and Deliver
——————
They Seem Determined Enough
They Look Talented Enough
They Play SMART Enough
They Are Improving Continuously [Mahalo, EG & Staff…]
Compared To “HOWARD”
That Also Reminds US
That Maybe We Are Also LUCKY Enough
NO Major Injuries
NO Lost Players
(It Has Been Years Since we could say that)
…..
SAID Before, But Bears Repeating…
Mahalo To WI Staff, Sponsors And Contributors Who Keep This Good to Great Site Going…
NOW Let’s GO Have a YEAR To Remember
One than Even Washes Away All That UNClean NCAA Stuff
HAUOLI MAKAHIKI HOU
LIKE REALLY ‘NEW’!
Not sure if this has already been noted by others, but I recall that Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry was very close to be one our assistant coaches a few years ago. I believe he was mentioned as being influential in recruiting Josten Thomas to Hawaii before he took the job at Howard. I think that decision may have opened up a spot for Benjy Taylor as the last hire to the staff that year. Interesting how that series of events shaped the recent history of the Hawaii program.
Maybe Dayton or someone can confirm (or correct) this info.
Should be good game. Have missed a lot, and hope I’ll catch this one. Go Bows!!
should be EASY as anything.. holidays over, school on break.. Saturday 530pm HST start for UH vs Howard.. UH on hot streak against Bisons and the nation’s leading scorer?
What is to stop near 8000 in house fans from being at SSC ? unless home bound, and sick or job?
Nothing..
Will be a shame if even 7500 are not at game tomorrow to support the Bow/ Warriors/
Go Bows !
🙂
who cares dad
2500 to 4000 ‘Care’
The Rest, Lack of Interest?
AT Least Enough Interest To Choose In OR Change Plans
Probably One of The Best Backcourts in UH History
SEE IF They CAN Shut Down ‘Howard & D-III
BUT 8 More Games And They’re Gone
UHMBB/Hawai’i ‘Basketball’ “Fans” May Never Know
Gotta ‘Presume’ the Rest Up to 6, 8, 10,000 (e.g., DHC)
Are Really About (Interested in) the Other Team — The Opponent?
Got TV for that…Every Day
LAKERS (Really Too-Late-for-KOBE) SELL-OUT?
[WE SAW Him When He COULD Play)
TRUTH: He’s Already RETIRED (Still Collecting Checks)–Just Doin’ the Farewell ‘Tour’
(It IS Good to Honor The Departing)
I suppose THIS (2500-4000) is Better Than The Core of 500 to 1500
That Riley used to Refer to…
Maybe: Because MANY Get Cause and Effect Backwards
If They WERE Showing Up we woulda already had a Better ARENA AND TEAM Sooner
Like a TRUE BIG-TIME Program
MAYBE Through The Oft-Criticized, and Maybe Under-Appreciated
EFFORTS of a FEW….RILEY-GIB-ERAN…(among others unrecognized)
This will become a BIG-TIME Program One Day
[I Think That Has to Include WINNING @ NCAAs…]
[REF: SHOJI, JUNE, LES, Maybe LAURA, Bob Coolen, Charlie Wade…Rolo?
NOTE: Dave Aranda — TOP TEN Defense Past Three Seasos Just Hired By LSU
BOTH Rolo AND Aranda — NOT Retained By Chow — were Considered “Geniuses” and Grinders, Like ERAN…
Mike Kryzyzewski (sp?) started small, UNKNOWN And Losing Several Seasons…
This is off subject but whatever happened to Canda? Still ineligible?
Intelligence ineligibility – perpetual or eventual disqualify.
Cando is can’tdo ; Not Hawaiian ohana!
The road loss at Texas Tech doesn’t look that bad. They just knocked off Texas at home and are still undefeated in their own building. They are a solid team that is tough to beat on their home court. Glad to see UHF1 son chiming in, haha.
UH has to surpass Otto and the Bows magical run.. against all odds, including toxic, BOR hoopsbalker and former assistant, whom know nothing about basketball.
And no support at all from UH admin/ chancellor and Amanda Paterson.. real formula to kill Otto and the Bows. and make Eran Ganot hire seem well Golden..
Well, I appreciate the guys. and so do my family. sons. about 50 years of age, so you are old number 3 son ! and grandkids, UH grads 22, 24.. 26..
they don’t like UH admin, Amanda, they stay clear of.. and they have stopped all monetary and in house attendance, instead buys with their families and taking care of less fortunate.
Until
admin . / chancellor/ and Amanda, clean their own noses. then. we , our ohana support UH leadership.
I agree with Governor, Ige, let Athletics row their own boat, don’t help UH Manoa, they have lost trust, and as highest , and brightest source of academia, and leaders of University.. they could not even assure that agenda, driven, ego driven,. Complaince custodian, could not help UH MBB program Avoid post season ban for next season? now UH has to spend even another 5000 dollars. waste of money..
however UH will do it.. what will be their line of reasoning? we did enough self sanctioning? NCAA will be prepared.. yes, WE READ already and seen what you have done.. We feel in ruling. You all could have done more, that is why we did not slap UH MBB and Compliance/ Admin with 3 year ban of post season, and 3 years of 3 scholarship loss, plus a 5 year probation period. got it.. ?
Hope it doesn’t come to that. however I don’t blame Ganot, Benjy or Gib.. it starts at the top Admin. and they not knowing how to Manage, and mitigate, work together. i.e. FB HC and program,.. and what should have been a nice 2 or 3 year run in NCAA’s for GA and Otto’s team
Big decisions for Junior , seniors to be.. be part of mess or move on.
Either way.. you Juniors are awesome, Ottos Warriors.. never left the campus. and still fighting hard.
do I think Eran has done good job, managing, some volatile guards? yes.. he is good at resolution. still untested against good BWC teams on the road.
Wish the best to team.. they play well, National Title contenders.. even if Dana Dias was coaching them, Dana, classy person.. still is..
Mr P or should it be Ms P? Am I a son of UHF1? If so that is good. Thank you very much. UHF1 might be an oldie but goodie fan but he must of been a great person to be around with in his younger days. A man that would have your back side protected. Best to everyone in 2016.
Amen to that !
🙂
Watching this game Isaac is not happy but playing his role due to NCAA rules we lost a yr.
