Bobbitt looking for more steals and wins as a senior
Roderick Bobbitt made quite the debut with the University of Hawai’i basketball team last season, leading the nation in steals and establishing several school records for steals. He would like to top all of those marks and more for an encore.
“Of course, win the Big West Championship first,” he said of his goals for the upcoming season. “I’m still trying to lead the nation in steals again. I got family and friends telling me that they want me to try again. Of course, I’m going to try and break all the steals records. Just create for team, make my teammates better, make myself better.”
Bobbitt was the only player to start all 35 games last season, and he finished with averages of 8.9 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game, to go along with his UH record 100 steals.
The Warriors will be employing new schemes under first-year head coach Eran Ganot, and Bobbitt said expectations remain high.
“All we had to do was listen and focus in and we’ll be able to get it quick,” Bobbitt said of learning the new system. “We all know what each other can do. That’s pretty big.”
As the returning starter at point guard, Bobbitt said he likes the offensive plays that are being implemented.
“We’re going to space the floor a lot, set screens, pick-and-rolls, drive-and-kicks,” he said. “We’re going to have a lot of space on the floor to make plays.”
Just like last season, Bobbitt will have to overcome an injury prior to the season. A year ago, he missed summer workouts due to an arm injury; this summer, he missed time due to an injured jaw. He was cleared last week to start participating in full practices.
“Fantastic,” he said, when asked how his injuries are healing. “I’m feeling good.”
Hey Rod:
You are #1, then #2… right down to #15, got to be healthy, strong, bigger, faster thru the season.
This is the best news, as a new process, TEAM, expectations taking shape.
Mahalo to you all!
Rod is a positive person. Offense will benefit everybody. Injury healing fantastic.
Bobbitt has the raw talent to do it but I’m not sure the Coaches will be able to set him up for success. Coach Taylor and co. definitely took advantage of his skillset so it’s yet to be seen how these coaches plan on utilizing his abilities.
I’m confident Coach Ganot and company will utilize Bobbitt’s skillset and strengths.
Bobbitt set the pace of the game last year, he was the catalyst how could one not look to him for the same this coming season? Janks probably being groomed by Ganot to be a beast inside.
Can’t wait for the season to start. Let’s Go Bows! Let’s Go Bows! Let’s Go Bows!
If Eran KEEPS that pressure, the doubles, traps, the scheme from last year, other defenders making Rod’s man handle ball, bring it up.. yep, Rod could approach 100 again, as a Team National Leader in steals.. Just have to shoot better from field, FT line and mid range to 3 line.. Team will be exciting. that is one thing about, athletic guys.. and last year, the whole bunch, including banger, our ONLY Big, would dive to floor, try to guard rim.. play with Power, Stef Jovanovich. so important as that last line of Defense, if top guys, the wings and guards get beat. MT, AV, Janks, Sai and Jovanovich, have to protect the rim,, NO easy layups or getting Dunked on.. or AND ones.. even keeping body between ball and man, ..
Rod, I hope so.. you have help, if they play smart too, Quincy with hops, very, very quick… Fleming, long athletic. play smart can get deflections and steals.. AV too, MT also.. and I don’t know about Sai.. he can play passing lanes too, at same time protect that painted area.. Sheriff.. maybe he too, get those steals, loose balls, help out rebounding.. by hustle and LOVE the run outs for dunks, or spot up mid range shots or dunks.. should be exciting.
Scary thing MAJOR fans.. NOBODY.. none of the top 8 get hurt. really devastating to depth of this year’s team, like last year..
If Rod NOT stat driven, however as HE SAID, I loved that attitude, ANYTHING TO HELP team win, and go far , if that is what is needed of him, turn steals into points. HE will do it.
Push with Poise.. I like that.. NOW team has to execute.. !
Getting excited.. hope that first game comes here fast !
Go Warrior Bows !
🙂
Is there a scrimmage for fans to watch? Its time to see what this team look like.
