Matlin named new Athletics Director
Here is the official announcement from University of Hawai’i Athletics:
HONOLULU–David Matlin has been named the new athletics director of the University of Hawai’i. UH Manoa Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman made the announcement on Wednesday, March 25 at a press conference at Les Murakami Stadium.
“I believe, during these challenging times for UH Athletics, that David has the proven executive leadership experience, vision and passion to stabilize and grow the program,” said Bley-Vroman. “We were searching for someone with the ability and agility to lead us through this complex and important period in the evolving national collegiate athletics landscape, and I am confident that we have found that person in David.”
Matlin said that he is honored and humbled to have been selected as UH’s next AD.
“This is honestly my dream opportunity and I understand that there are many challenges ahead,” said Matlin. “I am confident that with the support of the athletics department staff, UH leadership, and the entire state, we will be successful. I humbly ask the people of Hawai’i, and UH fans all over the world, for their support to ensure that UH Athletics not only survives, but thrives.”
As a former employee of the UH athletics department, an MBA graduate from the Shidler College of Business, and a local business leader with more than 20 years of sports management experience in Hawai’i, Matlin has a deep appreciation for the significance of the role that athletics plays in the success of the University and in the lives of the people of Hawai’i.
Matlin’s last 13 years of affiliation with ESPN and managing the Hawai’i Bowl, Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, and the Hawaiian Islands Invitational has allowed him to build relationships with NCAA conferences, athletic directors, and national organizations. He is one of nine members on the Executive Committee of the Football Bowl Association, which is the national organization established to promote, protect and ensure the quality of the student athlete experience for all college bowl games. Matlin is well respected among local and national constituents in the field of sports, specifically within intercollegiate athletics.
The recommended salary for the new AD will go before the UH Board of Regents for final approval at the April 16 meeting.
“I’m deeply appreciative of the tremendous feedback from campus and community members on this critical leadership position,” said Bley-Vroman. “Please join me in welcoming David as he takes the helm of the state’s NCAA Division I women’s and men’s athletics program and our 21 major sports teams.”
Matlin has over two decades of sports and entertainment marketing and management experience and has been involved with various entertainment events highlighted by the Major League Baseball World Series; the 25th Houston Astrodome Anniversary; the Miss Universe Pageant; NCAA men’s volleyball Final Four; and the NIT Basketball Tournament. He has been the Executive Director of the Hawai’i Bowl and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic for the past seven years. He was also involved in other productions, such as Christina Aguilera, Howie Mandel and Ray Charles concerts, as well as the Broadway musicals “Annie” and “Annie Get Your Gun.”
This is Matlin’s second stint at the UH Athletic Department after serving five years (1994-99), as an information officer primarily working with the ticket office, while also enrolled in the school’s MBA program. While working at UH, he was instrumental in developing and integrating information technology to assist with sales and distribution of individual, group and season tickets for all of UH’s ticketed programs. He also implemented a point-of-sale ticketing, credit authorization and remote phone sales system which increased ticket sales from 300,000 to more than 600,000 in a two-year period. He helped to devise a strategic three-year plan which included online and remote outlet sales as well as interactive voice recognition for telephone sales.
Matlin graduated from the University of Michigan in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts. Soon after graduating, he started his career as a marketing operations manager for the Houston Astros. In three years, he created operating procedures for the stadium information systems, promotions and special events. He was also in charge of divvying up over $3 million in local, regional and national sponsorship programs. In his fourth year, at the age of 26, he was promoted as the youngest Director of Sales in Major League Baseball. Matlin oversaw a staff of 16 and handled renewals and new sales of both group and season tickets, skyboxes and luxury suites. In just two years, new season ticket sales increased by 35%, and he was instrumental in developing the Diamond Level seating area which netted an additional $700,000 in ticket revenue in 1993.
After six years with the Astros, Matlin moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he was the assistant general manager/director of marketing of the Arts Center Enterprises and The Majestic Theatre. There, he honed his marketing skills in advertising and promoting Broadway shows, musical concerts and comedy acts.
Matlin became the vice-president of m2c and the director of operations for the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl in 2002. He has also provided management consulting for Panda Travel, Sodexo, and AIO Group. He focused his efforts on business development and client training. In 2008, he created DAKM Enterprises, Inc. and was named the Executive Director of both the Hawai’i Bowl and later the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Matlin is also the president of Value Travel Hawai’i.
Matlin is married to the former Dana Hatate and they reside in Honolulu with their two children, Kisa and Ross.

National Basketball HC posting up today? Hope Benjy has a shot. Hope that chancellor and new AD know what they are doing, get good counsel.
One thing, some say, administrating, personal issues, handling discipline of team and program key issues, true, however, Those matter have and will be addressed.. KEY like any sports, graduating and retaining athletes, good APR/GPA.. good student athletes in community.. AND bottom line for FB and MBB.. WINNING.. that is the key mantra, or high on resume for Benjy Taylor, took a rudderless, MBB program, and WON 22 games one shy of NCAA tournament.
I think HUGE mistake if Chancellor MId England dance and Linquistics instructor BV chooses another JC or BWC coach for MBB.. See what the fans liked, and Give Benjy Taylor a shot to retain on or two key guys, plus recruit, in a VERY late season.
Give Benjy, who WON 22 games a chance..
No June Jones or Football out there, to turn 22 wins into 32 wins.. Benjy Taylor, given chance, to have same guys and a few more recruits can do it.
I my Heart I say hire Benjy Taylor.. however.. in my mind.. you know what? Par for the course, DO NOT BE SURPRISED if UH hires a fired mid major or JC assistant/ HC.. someone, as Jackson W. likes to say,.. using BWC MBB team as a Stepping stone to better program and Conference.
Hope , the emails the petitions, the Local Media, support, Benjy give him a chance, If Theus, wan’t the baggage with that? Campbell,.. the recruiting angle. .. Benjy knows the guys. give Senque and Benjy one season, even mid summer to recruit 2 more JC guys , a Big and a shooter..
IF IT WERE PONO.
otherwise, thankyou Benjy Taylor, you deserve the job, however my former employer and bosses don’t get it.

Does This Mean Senque and Benjy, locked in SG? mean they might have inside track to MBB jobs for next season.. WE wait.. if a JC big commits next.. that is good sign.. shows admin, that UH with Benjy and staff, can Recruit.. DI talent.. yes, remember Pope, was high on Gib;s recruiting radar..
Hoping Benjy gets the job.. now Another Big 6’10-1-11″ 265 banger.. to commit.. would be awesome for RESUME for Taylor, the Papa Bead and Que..
Go Get it !
Really I let a friend of Big Big Island, a U. Mass grad. Assistant HC retired.. What do you think ? Will Benjy have a chance. ? Absolutey. Team in October after Head Coach, fired, and assistant fired. The top PF , Fotu, indefinitely suspended wen pro. And a coveted, whom many, many schools were chasing late, change his mind so many times. however left transferred in a good way back to JC in florida..Things happened, in Hotel room Irvine, he says that is internal matter, rules conduct, and LAPD, never arrested anyone.. just the hotel bill to clea the drapes, No drugs found. and if no release of guys drug tests then that if it showed none. or even trace, according to Student Handbook. there is a 2 or 3 strike and you are out. deal. Like Joey Iosefa and his DUI which could have left to death of himself and a innocent driver.
Shout outs by National Media, might put Benjy Taylor over the top:
1)Andy Katz -several times shout out to Benjy and the job he has done. tremendous, the Pitt, Nebraska and Colorado wins
2)the athletes, though small , and injured, short roster, played at high level in DHC..
3)Despite illness and 3 ankle , rib, concussion injuries, and back, UH still wen 8-8 and coach that recruited majority of team could NOT EVEN GET HIS team to win ONE game in BWC tornament in first round. Benjy got the Bows to win 2 games over higher seeds, including beating top seed all year long Davis.. Two Times. and 3 minutes, away from NCAA tournament.
4)Hugh Durham Mid Season Mid Major Coach of the Year Award, HUGE ONE.
5)fanbase of 4800-6200 every night give team ovation.. they LOVE BENJY BALL>
6)That means, Benjy his style Created excitement.. not like football program, and just about covered their expenses.
7)just about to sign SG;Wing Pope 6’6″ and a 6’11” 263 big.
8) HIs analysis, and dozens of black coaches of America, watching what UH with Benjy as interim and ACTING HC..
Benjy should be HIRED SOON BY DAVE MATLIN.. the posting of job, search team might go over for this week, and See that Benjy has been there, seen it, done it.. and can take the team further, and win championships.
My friend, ex U . Mass grad, former BB assistand, and other college assistant/HC retired, from East, and Midwest.. Benjy more than deserves the job.
Simple question for Matlin and chancellor BV? You Want UH MBB and UH WBB to continue to give fans joy.. AND not like FB team.. WIN, and win championships?
HIRE BENJY TAYLOR AND KEEP LAURA B>
My friend..they kind of don’t get the slooowness and not seeing the forest through the trees, in Benjy Taylor.. he is here, and just got commit 6’6″ leftie guard, long defender, creator. and about to get commit of 6’11” 256 big.
Sign Benjy.. Benjy, Benjy, Benjy, Benjy for MBB coach.. I think, or my friend thinks, since all the key components are in Place for great 2 to 3 year run for MBB team.. would be foolish to fire coach, and go elsewhere. we shall see reasoning by Chancellor, Matlin, if they go to Theus of Nichols from Mary Smith JC in Mass. crazy,.
We want Benjy, We want Benjy , We want Benjy,..we Want Benjy for MBB head coach !!
