Aaron Valdes scored a season-high 34 points and Stefan Jankovic added 15 points tonight to help the University of Hawai’i race past Cal State Northridge, 83-68, in Big West Conference men’s basketball action.

An appreciative crowd of 5,513 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Isaac Fleming add 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, Roderick Bobbitt contribute six points, 10 assists and eight steals, and Stefan Jovanovic pitch in with nine rebounds as the Rainbow Warriors improved to 13-5 overall, 1-1 in the Big West heading into its first conference road trip at UC Riverside on Jan. 17. The Matadors fell to 4-13, 0-2.

CSUN took a 44-43 lead after Stephen Maxwell’s two free throws with 17:34 remaining in the game, but Valdes answered with two free throws 50 seconds later to start Hawai’i on a 24-10 run capped by Fleming’s layup to put the Rainbow Warriors ahead, 68-53, with 8:03 left.

After the Matadors closed it to 70-60 on Aaaron Parks’ layup with 6:04 remaining, Valdes bookended a 9-0 run with a free throw and three-point play to essentially seal the victory at 79-60 with 4:32 remaining.

UH closed the first half with an 8-2 run in the final two and a half minutes to take a 39-37 lead into the break.

The Warriors’ next game will be a Big West road game at UC Riverside on January 17.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. UH first half scratching their heads. But second half unbelievable. Even Kentucky would be reeling. Never seen that kind of defensive intensity. Man when Bobbit is feeling good there’s no stopping him from stealing the ball. Aaron Valdez what can you say: superstar? Flemming freshman growing pains?; but boy is his future bright. And Jankovic with his versatility in the open court will be unstoppable if he can play like that every game.

  2. I’m happy hawaii took care
    Of business tonight.now they
have 13 wins and 1-1 in
    the big west.next game is
    on the road against riverside
.they need to win on the road.
Hawaii will finish in top 3 of
    Comference.and get 24
    Win season.hopefully go
    To ncaa’s.go warriors.

  3. Jamie Smith to be back for the next home game, Jan 22 , per Benji.

20 Steals by UH; 8 by Bobbitt, 5 by Valdes, 4 by Smith . 21 assists, 10 by Bobbitt, 4 each for Fleming and Thomas .

  4. What a second half! Exciting, enjoyable and just fun to watch. These guys are just great.
    Go Warriors!!!

  5. That was a real treat to watch. Way more fun than Wednesday. Nice one.

  6. great game tonight, it was close in the first half but Defense won the game, kudos to Valdes , on fire tonight , the road trip to Riverside next week wont be easy , defense must show up, Warriors are awesome when turnovers are created and the crowd was loud tonight .

  7. Go Bows… great comeback win…again, so far this season, have Not lost 2 games in a row.. good to go on 3 or 4 game winning streak. Still , if Hawaii has 14 more BWC regular season games, and can make it to Championship game of BWC tournament..can UH MBB get 22 or 24 wins, and Make This a Great season through Adversity.. it ain’t Crazy… it is insanely Good Team play, and Great job by Benjy and Staff.
Just dreaming high goal for team. If and When Nevels, Jawato and NWC can be back healthy and contributing towards March, UH will be getting better.. However, ALL BWC teams, have the Western Cali, great shooting, penetrating, Cali wings and guards, Williams, and Irvine, big teams.. LBSU big and athletic.. However. think that UH can beat anybody and lose to anybody.. can UH go 9-7 or 10-6 regular season record.. absolutely.

Janks and Jovanovich have to rebound, especially Janks.. work hard, he plays like a SF.. NWC.. in funk, ankles? Benjy says, if his 3 ball not falling, he wants him to work as hard as Nevels.. play D and rebound tough.. then shots will fall..
AV unreal, he keep up level of play on Cali road games, He is legitimate All BWC first teamer.. Bobbitt, the glue.. Fleming, has to keep emotions in check,.. Benjy good to sit him down, and keep him quiet , those technicals could cost UH a regular or BWC tournament championship.. Fleming just stay cool, awesome slasher.. like how he, Q… great, great hustle guy, 4 steals.. and Bobbitt, just up the tempo, turned over Poly 18x and CSUN 28x..

Defense, when teams break the pressure, or go to rim, the guards, just find a Bennett or Maxwell for easy layins.. UH has to shore up their half court and paint D..Benjy has to figure that out for team.. Half court D , if cannot get steal on gambles, and REBOUND better.. Nevels.. a Great rebounding 6’2″ guard..

Anyways. that 5500 in attendance, sounded like 10550, in attendance, next home stand on Jan. 22 2015, Benjy says OFFICIAL.. JAMIE.. aka Jimmy the Brit, will be back with Manoa Maniacs and UH BB team !! Awesome
Hopefully NWC, JAWATO and G MONEY will be ready Too !!

What can I say? the naysayers, after Gib,Akana fired and Reyes ,and Fotu departed, say UH would be fortunate to win 9 games, well they have 13 and counting..

    Go Rainbow Warriors.!
Keep getting better on the boards and guarding the Paint.. then you guys will challenge for BWC titles !!

    🙂
    great effort, and stay healthy
NWC…just have to grind.. rebound, assist, stealsz, and D up in halfcourt.. other things to help team win, the 3 ball shot and mid range game will come around. I like the team. TEAM.. all the 14 guys, JUST THE WIN is most important.. They have exceeded My expectations.. Wow !!
