Warriors race past Delaware State, 75-60

Valdes2_Del

Aaron Valdes scored 19 points and Garrett Nevels added 15 points tonight to help the University of Hawai’i race past visiting Delaware State, 75-60, in non-conference men’s basketball action.

A crowd of 2,997 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Negus Webster-Chan add 11 points and eight rebounds as the Rainbow Warriors improve to 7-2; the Hornets — who were coming off last Friday’s 72-65 upset at Wake Forest — fell to 3-4.

UH led 35-23 at halftime and broke it open with a 13-2 run to start the second half, capped by Isaac Fleming’s layup to make it 48-25 with 15:20 remaining. Delaware State could not get closer than the final score after that.

Hawai’i jumped out to leads of 10-2 and 14-5 sparked by Webster-Chan’s pair of 3-pointers, but Delaware State closed it to 18-14 on a pull-up jumper by Tyshawn Bell with 7:20 remaining in the first half. Webster-Chan then sank a free throw to start the Rainbow Warriors on a 10-0 run capped by Valdes’ 3-pointer, slam dunk and layup which made it 28-14 with 4:26 left.

Kendall Gray answered with a three-point play to cut the margin to 28-17, but Stefan Jovanovic drained a jump hook from the right baseline and Valdes threw down a breakaway slam dunk to push the lead to 32-17, and Nevels later swished a pure 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 35-19 with 2:02 remaining.

The Hornets closed out the half with four straight points to make it 35-23 at the break.

UH made four of eight 3-point attempts in the first half, while Delaware State went 0 for 6.

The Warriors are scheduled to depart Honolulu on Thursday for Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will play Brigham Young on Saturday.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. This team is so much fun to watch, so far. Like when they go for the steals and run. What’s Jackson W going to laugh about now ? I think i saw him on the internet stream in the crowd.

Good to see Jawato hit his three. Was that Fleming who threw that long football pass to Valdes ? Very smart to double and triple team Gray.

  2. Great team work and lots of energy. They play with passion and looks like they having fun. I should have been there tonite. Just couldn’t make it. This team deserves a bigger audience. Such an exciting team to watch.
    Go Warriors!

  3. Nice tune up game for the Bows. Now they get another big test in an unofficial road game in Salt Lake City vs BYU.

Gonna be tough, but if they continue to get after it defensively and make it a scrappy game, UH will always have a chance. The only real concern is the low 3pt % and FT % this year. The FT issues are going to cost UH a few close games in the Big West.

  4. FUHA: Actually I think Nevels and NWC are good free throw shooters, just the focus, taking a deep breath, repetition , bend knees , relax and shoot it without thinking too much. Who was good, Shamburger, No Bounce, just got the ball shot it, and it went in.. Know Who is the leading FT shooter for team? You got it, Stef Jovanovich, I think he is now 11 for 12 from the line for about 92%, excellent shooting.

That is a thing that can be addressed in practice, and guys just relaxing shooting FT’s. The 3 ball, Valdes , Fleming, Nevels, NWC, and maybe the Best 3 ball shooter Jankovich for Chaminade game, and Jawato getting his stroke back , they will be ready, Only 9 games in, still 23 more before BWC tournament, so time to improve. This Team, they love playing for Benjy, some emotional guys like Bobbitt and Fleming, however, they are Win First , Family First… just have to have under control.. as the guards and forwards go, the team goes.. Love how NWC and MT who are really 3’s, are battling for Rebounds.. it takes a Village to raise a Child.. It takes 15 hard working, One Ohana MBB team to raise a BWC championship Banner… jumping overboard with hope.. as NWC and Janks said last year.. WHY NOT? UH MBB.. with loss of two coaches and an elite PF … team is really becoming a Team.. And Benjy on post game radio show, said, the Scary part(21st century lingo for Really Good, or Baaaaad-great, )The Team will only get better, he did allude to a healthy Jawato, and the dynamic of Finally having Jankovich, who can stretch that 5 spot out to 27 feet, and go inside.. I can imagine, MT, Jovanovcih, and Jankovich, if they want to Go Really as Big as Possible, for down the road, BWC play.. or just play Cal Poly peaking BWC tourney ball.. This team, the upside, really the Story so far for the fall UH sports teams season, unless WBB and WVB, all go to Post Season, and do damage..

This Team, I really like, and they are going to finish pre BWC play, the first 16 games of season, I am sure they are shooting for 11-5 or 12-4, which would be huge. One game at a time.. against BYU, if UH gets a big win in Utah Jazz Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah…. what a huge lift .. for Chaminade and DHC, and final two pre BWC season games.. AWESOME JOB BENJY… just let the guys play, and help them with Que, Loyd and Autry, develop them into a fun loving, hard playing and winning team on and off the court, the D effort, and push the ball, 5 guys handle and run and finish is incredible !!

    Go Rainbow Warriors !
    🙂

  5. I’d Say the Team is Warming Up…

Is it Fair to say they look better than Two Fridays ago Versus Pitt?
That was the Last Time they played in Hawai’i
And They Looked Just As Sharp
    IF Not Better
Based on Fresher Legs, Better Health and Depth, More O & D Team Schemes
And Benjy’s Evaluation that they Are Improving
    AND WILL ONLY Get Better…
    Jawato Back Tonight..Three!
    Janks Soon
And Maybe Sammis, Even IF Only Half is Good And Impactful As I.Fleming (Famous Name)

Agree that UH “Should Be” [WILL BE] Good Free Throw Shooters by the BWC esp. IF and when they need it…
I’m Pretty Sure It’s Focus and Concentration, (Earlier Maybe Tired Legs as well)
BUT We KNOW they are ALL (Or Nearly ALL) Good Shooters
Some i was worried about — But Awkward Form — Bobbitt Hit Nine in a Row when Needed
ALL the Rest have Near-Perfect Shooting Form
Jovanovic, Valdés and Thomas are Just Impressive (say Even in Comparison to Previous, Standhardinger and Rozitis)
ADD Jankovic and They Will BURN Teams on their Fouls…

I “Think” Three-Shooting Will Take a Marked “Step Up” with Janks & Jawato going Mainstream….
I’m Looking for it To Go ‘VIRAL’, Infectious, As They Hit Smoothly and The Team Relaxes, i Expect the Other Three-Capable Shooters — There Are Many even after Fotu-Loss — Will Relax and Become More Effective…

Hey, Didn’t UH UPSET RANKED Utah State in Salt Lake City, too?
    Or At Least , Nearby…

    SURPRISE US AGAIN, ‘BOWS!
    With Another Great Road Trip
It IS What YOU Do, Right?

    Go ‘Bows!
    Blast Strong!

    P.S. Nice Exhibition Tonight…

  6. Eagle: You are correct on that. Trevor Ruffin led team beat BYU in Utah WAC tournament , quite incredible game I will never forget, with about 8 minutes remaining, I think the Cougars were up by 14, Jarin Akana got hot from 3, then John Molle Jr., then Kalia McGee hit one, then Trevor Ruffin hit a couple more, soon, UH was leading in last few minutes and held on for historic win and the NCAA bid !!
Loved that they beat the Reid twins !!
Also, Riley took up a team, with Troy Bowe as a PG/SG his first year as soph, . non qualifier, Troy got hot from 3, hit about 3 or 4 in a row, turned a close game in Provo, into a win for UH , I think it was the Reggie Cross led team and David Hallums, they beat the Cougars 3 times, once at Blaisdell and twice in Utah, once at Provo and once at Salt Lake City for WAC tournament quarter finals. Remember Gib’s year with Zane Johnson hitting a bunch of threes against the Jimmer BYU team.. Zane was keeping them in the game, until the ran out of gas.

UH playing their quick game, and outstanding defense, get out and transition and take care of the ball, they have chance to beat BYU Utah Jazz Arena…Hey, how many of us thought that UH would beat Pitt? Except for Benjy and the Team? They want to win.. Just go for it guys.. nothing to lose, NWC, Nevels, AV, just start hitting 3’s and the transition game, Jovanovich playing Big, MT getting better all the time, Q and Bobbitt running the team on O and D, Fleming the energizer off the bench.. if need to score, over BYU, Dyrbe and Jawato to the rescue.. Would not be surprised if UH got BYU.. either way, it should be great game.. after that 5000 mile unreal road trip to Florida, and 8 games, 6 wins in 12 days, a shorter trip to Salt Lake City should be not as hard, will be cold though.. team stay warm , hydrate keep hands, moist hold onto ball..

  7. Atta-Coach!

ONE THING I DO BELIEVE IS…

    AN IMPROVEMENT With Benjy…

HE Has a Good Sense for The Fatigue and Freshness of The Team…
GREAT TO Have A MARINE BOOT CAMP Approach …
RUN ‘EM into The Ground ‘Til They Toughen Up…
BUT A LOT Of Marines DIE On the Beach
OR At Least their Legs Burn up from Over-Use

THE TEAM IS STRONGER, Sharper, Has Quickness to Make The Steals –#4 In The Country
Has the Quickness to BEAT Bigger Guys to The Rebounds
    AND 50-50 Balls…

AMONG COACHES, THIS Was Considered One of DICK TOMEY’s Greatest Strengths…
That he had a Sense of The Team’s Fatigue … YOU DON’T LEARN and Practice Well When You’re Too Tired
The MANTRA IS: PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
[Alternatively, Lousy Practice Creates Bad Habits, Sloppiness…]

    ATTA-Coach!

  8. Eagle: Benjy given a chance with these recruits the 15… he is doing a great job, across near 10 games, about a little under third of season.. Fantastic, that tactic, of not going hard in practices, let the guys get their legs, and mental reps, film breakdown, and shoot around. work on installing more sets.. the 13 day break will be great for team make run to finish off the first half of Pre BWC tourney season, hope they all go 12-4 or 11-5 … can they do it? why Not.. The team believes, and Benjy is letting them have fun.. let them play.. and they are buying into Benjy Ball. I hope Benjy has a great season, then let Mr Ben Jay or is it the Chancellor ? make call….on new , or 3 year contracted HC for next season.. Benjy , I know you read some of our posts.. YOU doing great job, families and team and fans really appreciate you, Senque, Autry and Loyd, Awesome job.. Don’t wear out guys, have them ready for BWC play, and historic season, a Season of Hope, a season of Redemption, a season .of Finish Strong, and Play Looooooong time in Big Dance. Why Not UH ? as NWC and Janks say.. aim high.. reach for the Gold !!

Go Bows.. Eagle, you and warriorhaw, and the faithful.. how did I know it would be about 2900 in attendance, history, work nite, school nite, and team UH playing, however, UH keeps winning playing exciting ball, 4000, 5000 will start to come out DHC and BWC time guaranteed . with hopefully Jamie Smith Back !!

    Go Rainbow Warriors !!
    🙂

  9. Does anyone know if Janko will be eligible to play against Chaminade. The game is scheduled on 12/19/2014. Fall semester officially ends on the 20th. Having him in the paint and Filipovich @ PG adds depth and 10 players available for game rotation. Juwato is another 3-point shooter coach Taylor appears to to want to insert and bring along slowly. Hope his legs get stronger with more play.
