Mike Thomas scored 14 points and Isaac Fleming added 11 points off the bench tonight as the University of Hawai’i held off stubborn Prairie View A&M, 76-68, in non-conference men’s basketball action.

A crowd of 3,292 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched Garrett Nevels, Quincy Smith and Negus Webster-Chan each added 10 points the Rainbow Warriors complete their non-league schedule at 12-4. Prairie View A&M fell to 2-11.

Webster-Chan also grabbed six rebounds, but left the game with an apparent leg injury with 17:30 remaining and did not return.

Stefan Jovanovic swished a baseline jumper two seconds before halftime to give UH a 38-36 lead at the break, and Thomas’ two free throws pushed the edge to 49-43 with 13:39 left in the game. But the Panthers clawed their way back and eventually took the lead back at 56-55 on Montreal Scott’s 3-pointer with 9:30 showing on the clock.

Thomas later broke a 58-58 tie with two free throws at the 7:06 mark, igniting a 10-0 run capped by Nevels’ runner which made it 68-58 with 3:27 remaining.

Prairie View A&M closed it to 70-66 on Scott’s 3-pointer with 1:32 left, but Fleming answered with a driving layup and Aaron Valdes effectively sealed the game with a spectacular alley-oop slam dunk off Roderick Bobbitt’s assist from near the halfcourt line to make it 74-66 with 55 seconds remaining.

The Panthers made 10 of 22 attempts (45.5 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc, including five by Scott, a 6-foot-3 wing who finished with a game-high 27 points.

More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.

  1. Good test against a quick team.

  2. Poised team. Poised coach. Stuck with the high percentage shots down the stretch. Toughed it out and shined through injuries. Still think they will only get better !!

  3. Strongly AGREE — WILL Continue to Get Better
    ALL Season Long…

Coach Benjy says Negus said he was O.K. and could re-enter the game, but it didn’t look like the team needed him to…
“this is just one different generation…” said the coach… (similar to original sprain from BYU game where Negus waited for DHC games to return… “Bigger Games” he said…)…

Garrett Nevels still scheduled for thumb ligament surgery tomorrow… on post-game show, as you might suspect, he indicated he might play sooner than some think… he’s having the surgery because it should be better for him and the team in the long run… as displayed tonight he has adapted and obviously can function effectively as-is…

JMHO, but i do object to the “attitude” that we are playing ‘junk’ teams… maybe it’s o.k. for “entertainment fans” to think like this, but i’m glad the team is more mature and shows R-E-S-P-E-C-T to ALL their opponents… even “Our Worst” UH Teams were able to knock off Ranked Teams on a Given Night and there’s NO Particular Value to talking down the opposition, other than it puts you in the same ‘class’ as the Portnoy crowd’ — the talkers and Non-Players… The Coaching and A,D, Staffs struggle just to get a Full Schedule And Southern And PVAM HELP UH Prepare itself – IF We’re Smart Enough to Apply Ourselves and Take Advantage of The Competitive Opportunity — to Prep and Put its Best Foot Forward when BWC League play starts Next Week… i Don’t know what ‘people’ or BB Fans consider ‘entertainment’ BUT a few weeks ago we were excited just to watch “Open Court” Highlights… Now we can see our guys in Real Action Versus teams Trying Their Guts-Out Best to STOP U.H. on OUR Court… THIS TEAM is Extremely watchable BUT We Have Less than 4,000 in house and ONLY Eight Home Games Left… DOES Hawai’i “Deserve” a Team This Good?

PVAM Held Court for 35 Minutes — Better than some UH Teams of Recent Vintage — and put on a Very Good Shooting and Rebounding Clinic — WHERE ARE The fans? Are “Hawai’iI” fans ONLY Spectators who wanna see Wichita or Pitt? BUT they don’t show UP in Maui either…

I’m thinking maybe Hawai’i’s NOT that Smart of a Basketball Town…?

Nice to See Benjy & Staff earning some Respect — but not yet a job? —
GIB probably deserved that Respect as well …BUT the same UH Admin is Botching the Opportunities to ‘Show Class’ as well as Build and Recruit Smartly…
