Warriors rebound in win over Marist
Less than 24 hours after its largest loss of the season, the University of Hawai’i basketball team rebounded well in a 62-55 victory over Marist in the consolation round of the Gulf Coast Showcase at Estero, Florida.
The Warriors improved to 5-2, including 1-1 in this tournament, thanks in part to a 42-28 rebounding advantage. Marist – which is located in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference – dropped to 0-4.
Hawai’i will face East Carolina (3-2) for fifth place in the tournament on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. East Carolina defeated Fresno State, 58-52, earlier on Tuesday.
Garrett Nevels scored 18 points to lead the Warriors. Aaron Valdes added 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Mike Thomas contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, and Negus Webster-Chan scored nine.
The Warriors led by as many as 21 points in the first half, but had to hold off several second-half flurries from the Red Foxes. Marist got as close as one in the second half before Hawai’i secured it in the final minute.
“We came out well in both games, but we just don’t have enough legs right now,” acting head coach Benjy Taylor said. “We ran out of gas in the San Francisco game, and it almost caught up to us again today, but we reached down and pulled it off. Our core group is really answering the call right now and they’re going to have to do it again (Wednesday). It’s going to take a yeoman’s effort, but these guys are up for the challenge.”
Both teams started out cold – Hawai’i shooting 1 for 8 to open the game, and Marist shooting 1 for 6. But the Warriors heated up soon after that and quickly established the momentum.
Redshirt freshman guard Niko Filipovich got his first significant playing time of the season, and it sparked the Warriors in the first half. He scored five points during a 15-0 run that gave Hawai’i a 25-7 lead with 8:43 remaining in the first half.
Another reserve player – sophomore guard Dyrbe Enos – contributed three points and an assist during the first-half Hawai’i surge.
“It worked out (with the score) that we could put some of those guys in and they did the job,” Taylor said. “I wanted to play them more in the second half, too, but it got a little tight and I stayed with the core group.”
The Warriors increased the lead to 31-14 after Valdes dunked in a missed shot with 4:12 remaining. Valdes, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, had more rebounds by himself (10) than the entire Marist team (9) at that stage of the game.
By the end of the first half, Hawai’i had 25 rebounds, and Valdes grabbed 13 of them to match the Red Foxes’ team total.
Marist closed the first half with an 8-0 run, and Hawai’i took a 35-22 lead at intermission.
The Warriors shot 1 for 8 in the first four minutes of the game, and 0 for 5 in the final four minutes of the first half. In the 12 minutes between those cold stretches, they went 14 for 18 (77.8 percent).
Hawai’i led by as many as 15 early in the second half, but the Red Foxes used a 17-5 surge to get as close as one, 46-45, with 10:19 remaining. The Warriors responded with nine consecutive points on their next four possessions to regain control at 55-45. A 3-pointer by Webster-Chan with 6:42 remaining capped the 9-0 surge.
Marist made another late run at the Warriors, getting as close as 58-55 with 1:11 remaining. Nevels scored a basket with a minute left, then Roderick Bobbitt hit two free throws in the closing seconds to close it out.
Hawai’i converted 45.3 percent (24 of 53) of its field goals during the game, while limiting Marist to 32.1 percent (17 of 53).
Taylor noted that the East Carolina game on Wednesday will start at the same time as the Marist game did on Tuesday.
“We’ll do everything the same and hopefully get another win,” he said. “East Carolina is good, they’re big, they play in Conference USA so they’re used to playing big games. It’ll be a tough game and we’re looking forward to it.”

Agree with Runbows’ point —
IF CAN Beat E.Carolina that ‘really is’ a 3-1 “Road-Trip”
It would be NIT-Picking to lament that The First Leg of the Trip was less than a hundred miles (just like Most Big West and WCC ‘Road’ Trips, at least had to board multiple planes, buses and time zones overall, versus just One Bus…)
No One Would be Satisfied, But 2-2 is now The Worst Case…
GO ‘Bows!
FINNISH STRONG!
Well, “a win is a win”, I guess. Probably will go down as the ugliest win of the season. Marist basically handed this one to us on a platter, and we nearly refused it. How we blew a 21 point first half lead blows my mind. Blame ‘travel fatigue’ and ‘heavy legs’ if you want, but the way I see it, it comes down to the coaches putting in the right guys and making the right plays at the right times. This team doesn’t know how to play with a lead, as previously seen against High Point and even San Fran. Big leads get turned to dust and ends in disappointment. Credit to the hustle players to keep the team in the game. Tomorrow should be interesting, definitely winnable but I’m going to temper expectations.
Anyone know why Fleming only played one minute of this game after averaging 24 minutes a game?
Eagle: The doomsayers, the negative nancies, I mean everything to destroy, or disrupt, MBB team, from what went down. Now interim coach Benjy, and if Ben J. is smart.. think about mid season or going into BWC.. if UH is doing well…to lock him into 2 yr deal with current staff provide stability for next year too. That is just my opinion..
However, Benjy and the TEAM , totally exhausted. however what a great first half run, up by 21 pts, and held on, with their experience in close games so far to close out.
And you and I and thousands of other Insiders not the Outsiders. WE KNOW how hard this challenged team, has to battle to win at SSC.. Now Maui neutral court, NOT SSC,.. and these 3 .. over 6000+ miles away from Hawaii, incredible if UH goes 4-1 away from SSC center, and having gone 6-2 over 8 games in 13 days, across 6 time zones, Incredible. shout out and kudos to This WARRIOR basketball team, Benjy and great staff. Lot of Heart. and MT and AV and Nevels stepping up, Stef Jovanovich, playing Big man role.. NWC spending so much time on defensive end affect his shot.. and I know his ribs are not totally healed.. credit to NWC for hitting layup and big time 3 at end, Nevels floater and Valdes runner in lane.. to help UH seal the deal.
Yeah.. Eagle.. UH , Who in the nation NCAA DI ball, despite, that nogood poster, gibn.. has to do what UH MBB has to do.. and the commentators for Florida Gulf the radio team from USF and Marist give a lot of credit to Benjy and team, overcoming adversity.. as well as Kanoa and Espn crew did High Point game.. The College coaching fraternity and shout out from Andy Katz, the incredible win over highly favored , and I do hope they win the Maui Classic.. Katz kudos to UH, because of and despite of the , What went down, with the Downers of UH MBB.
Team, and Eagle and Fans.. Back the Bows !!
Waaay to Go True WARRIORS..
One More.. go get the Pirates of E. Carolina !!
I feel teary eyed again, one of the feel good stories of NCAA DI ball so far this 2014-15 season for sure..
Benjy and MBB team, the 1-14 great, great job.. GET YOUR REST and Sleep , by 3rd day, hope to make one more run for victory.. hey even if ONE WIN.. that is great.. come home 5-3 and play the last 8 games pre BWC , 7 in Honolulu and one road game against BYU in
Salt Lake City Utah Jazz Arena
Eagle.. from the beginning, UHF, hoopsa, now RunBows..
we stay with team no matter who heading the team.. Go Bows !
🙂
FTR: GREAT FOR NIKO & DYRBE…z
Listening to BYU Dis-mantle Chaminade (Smart)…
TOO BAD we couldn’t Catch BOTH PITT & BYU Down Here instead of @ Provo
What? Missouri, too? Any More “Trades” This Season?
We Done ‘Good’ on The Deals…
GO ‘Bows!
Finish (sp) Strong!
Hey Isaac.. Just stay POSITIVE. with all the Crud flying around team a few weeks ago.. They deserve all of our praise, And to akuhead2, Benjy and Que, Loyd and Autry, doing a heck of a job helping team to win.
Fleming.. a Benjy call.. .. Isaac Fleming a 20 year old freshman, he is a great young BB player and smart guy, he will be good this year, no question. team concept ..
bigdaddy, Isaac Fleming, well coached, AAU and prep, and by family.. He will be alright..
🙂
Isaac Fleming, Quincy, Nevels, and Bobbitt, running show with MT or AV, that is a small but hugely athletic team.
Agent Zero “0” will be back..
Any road win is a big win when you come from Hawaii! This Marist team came from New York which is still on East Coast time. UH had to make major flights and adjust to five hours of difference.
I hope they are adjusted because East Carolina is also a East Coast time team that didn’t have to go that far to get to Florida. I really wish UH could of played Fresno State so we can give them the double whammy for basketball and football this week!
Great win guys now go get the next one! I wonder too if Isaac Fleming hurt because Niko Filipovich got some time and did good. Bigdaddy, any news you can share about Isaac?
Hey after UH comes home, Dec 2nd SSC against Delaware St., then BYU Sat. Dec 6th, in Salt Lake, I think that game is on the BYUTV network.. HawTel, Dish or Oceanic, we have it.. , Then THE RESPITE, R & R and very impotant make sure finals for classes are good, actually doing home work on road, and come home Thursday, and hit the books for Mid term finals coming up.
After the BYU road game on the Dec 6th, UH will not play again,(tears.. .. oh no..!! however, they need the rest)until that “road game” to Blaisdell Center, I think because, UH will have Dec 19th graduation at SSC , or something.. against Chaminade…. So UH will have almost 2 weeks to get finals in order, rehab and get ready for DHC.. Hopefully the buggah, the Toronto Serbian Bro, with the stretch game, and HUGE addition, and hopefully Jawato..Both ready to do some damage.. I tell you Dyrbe, Niko.. Jankovich AND healthy and hitting 3 ball Jawato, will add so much more for DHC and BWC run…interesting.. Eagle HERE COMES THE CALVARY and Benjy Did Go to Niko and Dyrbe No Hesitation..
Remember It Takes A village to Raise A Child? IT WILL TAKE A WHOLE UH MBB TEAM and Staff, and The fans, to raise a championship Banner.. as NWC and Janks said last Year? Why not Us (UH MBB).. Doing it, and winning Without Bro with the Fro, Brother Isaac Fotu, whom I am sure is happy,
Same as Gib and Akana.. The team real Warriors !!
🙂
Hey I should write articles for SA and Midweek, and whatever.. The Positive Spin Zone !
Go Bows !! Respite on the way.. Get ONE MORE.. go 3-1 away from the Stanley HUGE.. and Ben J. think about it, just my opinion.. see how Benjy and team do heading into BWC , play and think, it would not cost too much, lock in 2 year deal, this year and next with Benjy and staff for continuity..
Go Warriors.. We backing the Bows !!
🙂
islandman.. that person or youngster, co ed, gib… n…. will jump in and go negative.. such short blurbs.. a person, with No Positvie quality at all..
Go Bows !!
It seems like USF, Marist and E. Carolina all have the same type of athletes.. good size and athletes..Well, the David vs Goliath scenario as another post said:

44 Kanu Aja Forward 6-9/245 JR Baltimore, Md. (City College of San Francisco)
Good win ! Every win is a good win !
Missed the game, but saw that Marist has yet to win a game this year.
East Carolina on the other hand beat Fresno and was 3-2 before the tournament. Starting to gel.
Speaking of BYU, the guard Haws is supposed to be a good shooter. However, today vs Chaminade who got wiped out by BYU, Chase Fischer of BYU shot 10-13, 3pt FG’s for 30 pts. He was 9 of 10 in the first half ; broke Jimmer Fredette’s record for most 3 pointers made in a game.
Any reason why Fleming only played 1 minute?
Two Great Weeks of Bball: the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Conference Championships!
Die Hard Fans have to agree.
These two weeks always render several 3 day, 8 team tournaments that become a battle of Attrition, not only for the players but for the officials, as well. Legs are always the first to go which affects shooting, passing and mental decisions.
By the 12:50 mark in the second half, all five of our on the floor Warriors were already holding their waists! They had just enough strength and desire to make this a favorable outcome.
What a refreshing sight it was to see positive play from both Niko and Dyrbe! Valdes is amazing as he not only can jump but he actually has great foresight…16 boards, Wow!
Most game three of a tournament becomes ugly. The outside shot will not fall, TO’s abound and usually the team that can take the closest high percentage shots will win. I hope our BOWZ are up to the task tomorrow to do just that. As pointed out here, they would return only losing one on this Killer Road Trip.
Just remember Bowz…your opponent is going to be almost as tired as your are tomorrow.
GO BOWZ…Very Proud of You!
Re: Fleming, a guess is that he didn’t follow the coaches direction late in the game vs. USF. Then he may have not followed some in today’s game. I could be wrong.
Also, Negus did not start today, Stefan started the game. NIko and Enos subbed in the first half ahead of Quincy. But Niko and Enos did not play in the 2nd half . Quincy played 5 minutes in the 2nd and 1st halves each. Stefan only played 2 minutes in the 2nd, 11 in the 1st .
Isaac, hold down the excitement a bit! A win is a win “you guess”? C’mon now. Don’t worry about your 12 win prediction. Enjoy the win. The team worked for it. Not like Marist offered to play 3 on 5. Any W is worth savoring. I know the team won’t be giving it back
islandman : Probably correct on all accounts. Benjy HC , and has to manage team. NWC has friends , family? maybe at game or following from Canada. Isaac perhaps too. NWC, I still think banging inside, his ribs are still hurting.. he is not a BIG Body..however , the guy does what coach wants.. and NWC however or whatever, coach decides… IT IS THE WIN OVER SELF OR STATS..going to need, Nevels, NWC.. Dyrbe, Niko, Valdes, Thomas, Jovanovich, Jawato, Janks, the Whole Team, working together, to get wins.. this Team, though small, they are outworking athletic and Bigger teams.. only bodes well for BWC time.
We, even the faithful WI MBB several dozen, maybe hundreds on this forum,, do we really Appreciate what Benjy and the MBB are going through.. amazing how Benjy said before first game, IF this young team, with new guys, and HC, can learn and at the same time Win games that would be great.. I think that is exactly what they are doing.. That 2 week break before the Chaminade game Dec 19th at the Blaisdell, UH can heal up, and FINALLY get Jankovich in action. Will help, and once Again if Jawato gets up to speed.. UH should be ready for BWC run..
Benjy doing good job managing team, so very far from home arena.. and making sure guys stay Together.. from day one, when he took over as acting, and NO HE is not acting, he is Coaching. for real.. great job.. that Everyone give effort, everyone, wants part of team.. Be a Team.. That is great HC philosophy, I can bet that Senque, Coaches Loyd and Autry having great say, in helping guys stay together..Only wish them the best.. They come home at 5-3.. that is fantastic.. They win consolation championship and come back 6-2.. whoa.. Awesome.
Either way.. love the Don’t quit, smaller team, the David vs Goliath attitude, they are learning to win as young student athletes playing for a University NCAA DI BB school in MId Pacific. and WE are so proud of them.
AND SHOUT OUT TO SCHMIDT OHANA, Valerie Schmidt, Ameriprise, Pacific Risk Solutions, and Dayton and WI staff.. Without this UH MBB fan and family friendly positive, yet objective site doesn’t matter what drink, water or guava juice… get on board the MBB train.. on a great ride
Just BACK THE BOWS.. Waaaay to Go Warriors !!
🙂
AD B Jay said he has an idea of the allegations, but can’t say what they are yet. But something about that the only player who would be affected is 42. Hope that is true .
Anyone surmise that Fotu was playing in the pro league and may have accepted a meal or towel or something? Maybe travel?
islandman: Pretty sure Ben Jay has definite idea, who are the main subjects of allegations.. you know why? Here we go Chuck C. , If BOR, Jeff P. and how dis guy Jackson knows, the leaks.. , However, Ben working with UH general counsel, and THE BEST IN THE LAND dealing with proactive action, to lessen hits, Alabama Special Legal.. Must be, that our good young athlete might have been involved. one way or another… If Two coaches gone, and Now 42 playing Pro, then that might have been what NCAA was looking for, that UH took it that seriously.. Still wish that everyone will eventually be cleared.. No felony, however.. ncaa rulebook so massive and extensive, hard to know what to do and what not to do.. they should loosen reins some..
islandman, you must have heard, I was not available, the call the AD with Bobby Curran, if it is 42 only that would have been disciplined, suspension or so forth, that is good news.. works out well for UH MBB program moving forward, maybe some lesser things, practice time, a scholie, maybe we don’t know.. However Ben Jay has Good Idea what it is.. He just might have saved UH , to let them play post season, like St Mary’s 4 year deal, .. Hope so..
Stay tuned.. could be that AD did the right thing.. for student athletes and coaches not part of ncaa whatevers.. it will come out soon I guess, then Public will know.
In meantime, UH MBB and Benjy and staff, doing fantastic.. More motivated..without 42, people say they will be 9th place in BWC, I don’t think so, .. UH will fight hard to be in top 4 for sure.. what have they got to lose? Nothing.. Everything to gain, and they , UH MBB team and Benjy have tons of respect for keeping program and team going And winning, despite what went down.. shoots you could write a movie script about this.. If UH ends up going to the Dance.. Whoa ! that would be something..
JMO.. however if only 42, and lesser hits.. That IS GOOD NEWS !!
🙂
Go Bows, Warriors, battle a very athletic and big East Coast team in E. Carolina, win or lose, you guys are Champions !!
And of course best wishes to 42 on his pro journey, Isaac Fotu, Hawaii loved you, in several years come back, and give back.. the poke bowls await.. and UH MBB program will hopefully be great for years to come !!
🙂
Past is the past now.. UH MBB move forward, cannot control allegation letter, let the legal special team do their team to help UH MBB.
Islandman stop seculating fleming not playing had nothing to do with the previous game to my knowledge.
Runbow I wish I was in Florida were expecting snow today
bigdaddy:
Real cold, used to live east and northwest.. (too cold for me,. nice fresh fallen snow, however when get icy, and wind chill , brutal weather)very, very cold.. Isaac, as I say, he will be back, your son has real desire to WIN… I saw him smiling a lot when team got to big lead, and he was applauding when Nevels, NWC and Valdes put away game in last minute or so..He is part of team, he ain’t No quitter, this bunch, the 15, they are family. Florida, heard from game radio broadcast crew that UH MBB team and other 7 teams in really nice hotel..
Wish you could get off and go down to Florida, however, you have to do what you have to.. love having, like Valdes Dad, before, a father giving really good BB insight, as A coach, I believe you have lot of experience, more than most on board, about the game.
Cream=Team will Rise to the top.. they, including Isaac are getting better game by game.
They are so tired. hope for One More victory, tomorrow against a tough E. Carolina team with those big athletes.. UH defense, and getting their shots, including mid range, and drive the paint, and get looks for bigs.. UH can win the Consolation Title.. they going do their BEST !!
I hope that Flemings isn’t hurt. I can’t think of any logical reason why Niko and Dyrbe would get minutes before him. Bigdaddy can you clear the air and explain why the decrease in minutes?
Fleming probably didn’t play just so Dyrbe and Niko could get more playing time. Fleming, who’s only a freshman, has been playing loads lately, so it’s probably right to give him some rest ahead of the very long season.
NOT Sure IF Any Other Frustration/Emotion Issues — ALL Natural — like Kicking the Bench —
BUT With Bench ABLE to Help Drive a 20-Point First-Half Lead (And also Burn it Away later)
It May have Been Smart (even if Not Intentional) to “Bank-Roll” Some Fresh Legs for Game 3…
There was also an issue with Turnovers (Not Naming or Blaming — could be Team Mental Fatigue)
Hope Jawato CAN ADD Some Fresh Legs and Threes…(Like Dyrbe & Niko)
Go ‘BOWS!
Suck it UP — FIND/GET The Legs to Overcome Pirates
FINISH STRONG! Fight Through
WIN One More Today!
REWARD: Go HOME Happy…
Eagle:
Hoping UH can find one last push, this 8 games in 13 days, and the travel from Maui to Florida, brutal, .. if UH played USF in Las Vegas, for this type of tournament, I bet they would be 2-0 and playing for championship game. To put into proper perspective, EVEN NBA teams don’t have 8 games in 13 days.. and have to fly over 6000 miles across, Hawaii Time , Alaskan Time, Pacific Time, Mountain Time, Central Time, and Eastern Time Zones.. UH pulls off a 2-1 record.. you would think..Sporting News, ESPN, CBS sports, NBC sports, CNN, Sports Illustrated would have writeups about this Hawaii team, they , UH MBB roll into DHC with a good record despite all the trials.. they will have national recognition. Incredibly good job by Benjy and staff and these 12 Road Warriors !!
Go Bows, Warriors , One More for Consolation Title!
🙂
I don’t buy that. You don’t sit out a guy to rest him when he is a contributor at 25min per game.
Match ups, rest, whatever. Team notched a W. People need to let Benjy coach. If there are people on the board who think they know how to coach then please apply when the search begins for permanent head coach. Team means W is more important than pt. isaac will do just fine. Kind of like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. No need to explain to fans why Isaac sat out. Team won and that is bottom line. Focus on next game. Get back to school and their own beds. Keep warm Bigdaddy. That cold front moving up the east coast looks brutal.
I’m sure Fleming will get time today if not then something’s wrong
A battle of the East vs West; Teams seem to be even.
Was close till about the last 8mins TEAM increased the lead to 9.
We playing very methodically with composure!
East playing patiently, slow game.
Score at intermission is 38-29 Hawaii.
Leaders G-money got 10; NWC just 1-less. Airon&Rod steady!
Rebound, West led 17-12!
Will take all of the above for the 2nd half for us.
Dyrbe and Stepteau getting meaningful minutes today.
Yea Fleming has not even entered the game?
HUGE WIN GO BOWS !!
🙂
Rainbow Warriors, Real Warriors ! defeat E. Carolina Pirates to win Consolation championship, go 2-1 on the road, 6000+ miles away, dead tired
UH-74 E. Carolina- 71 final UH wins!!!
🙂
yeah !!!
GREAT WIN…
GREAT TRIP, ‘BOWS!
75-73 Hawaii
Mahalo to 15C&4QLuck!
The announcers were praising you!
Without some guys.. Dyrbe and Niko were huge part of close wins against ECU and Marist College.
As BM says, quite frankly, remarkable, however WI UH MBB, not WBB nation which is for their OWN site, twitter ,facebook.. We believe.. UH just give effort, stay together. get healthy AND listen to coaches.. quite Amazing
Welcome Home Warriors !! The plane ride.. hey maybe you don’t need Plane, just flying sky high.. very tired. and drink lots of water, sleep, don’t get sick and hit the books for fall semester Finals !!
Great Win, the first chapter of a Great Novel, the Wounded Warrior MBB program, Healing and getting Better !!
Go Bows !!
🙂
Yes main thing they won
sorry fanof15C, or joy? UH-75 ECU-72.. well whether 2 points or 22 … a Win on the road, far, far away.. by everything that could destroy them.. Now have to get. IF, BJ, Stef Janks, healthy and on board the train for MBB heights..
Now back to ground zero.. UH good job.. tremendous odds against you.
Benjy, Que, Autry, Loyd , and staff , great , great job keeping the guys on ONE PAGE, and Eagle, THEY FINISHED STRONG !!
🙂
WOW alot going on in Florida. Good win for UH 6 & 2
