Warriors rout Tennessee State in opener, 85-55
Christian Standhardinger scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Isaac Fotu added 16 points and eight rebounds and junior college transfer Garrett Nevels contributed 13 points and three rebounds tonight to help the University of Hawai’i men’s basketball team open its 2013-14 season with a convincing 85-55 victory over Tennessee State.
The win came in the opening game of the 49th Annual Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic.
The Rainbow Warriors jumped out to a 41-20 lead by halftime and opened the second half with a 9-1 lead to stretch it to 50-21 with 16:21 remaining. The Tigers could not get closer than 24 points the rest of the way.

Weʻll Take 10 to 30 Point WINS Every Night….
UH HAS The Better Starters AND Bench…
What a team. Great win. These guys are fast and play as a team. Shamburger is the point guard they needed.
Go Rainbow Warriors!
Eagle and Palolo Warrior: Great to see team in action against another D1 opponent. Rainbow Classic good test for new and old mixture of Rainbow Warriors! Tenn. St, has some athletes, UH with PG supreme, Shamburger, just ran them to the ground, AND ran half court sets, to near perfection, I mean, 9 turnovers, with pressure D for nearly the entire game? Alright!
Next, Western Michigan, those grind out, 3 point set shooters, half court, good fundamental teams. as Standhardinger said on post game radio show with Dickman, UH will grind, and keep on running, with 10-11 guys contributing.
Impressive, WITHOUT Spearman, team was rolling, even after, a little slow start. Q, brave guy , 8 minutes total, poor guy too, that back will stiffen after game, so Trainers have to really watch his minutes and rehab back after game. He and Shamburger, Nevels in the game, with those 3 guards, great fluid game, on D and O!
Dyrbe Enos, about 10 minutes plus of game time? Wow. Dyrbe handled pressure pretty well, tough 808 dude, and we all know Sham and Dyrbe can shoot the ball.
Still, Western Michigan, Gib has to do good scout and tell team, still have to take care of ball, play solid D, Rebound, shoot well and run good transition to win.
Impressive for a team with 7 new guys who played, of the 14 on the bench, and 13 who saw minutes, 11 scored! That is team work!
One game, ONE OHANA, One game, ONE WIN at a time. guys get rest and comeback with similar game plan, if WM goes slow down, grind, well UH with Sham running point, grind it with Fotu, and Christian and Davis, going to work!
Valdes: 9 pts. 6 board, blocked shot, steals, 3 pointer? Really filled in more than adequately for Spear!
Spearman, rehab well, I tell you , WE NEED Brandon Spearman, he is the glue besides Sham, Great win UH BB team and Gib, love the fast break game, and finishers, NOW go get win number two!
Great audience too, for early Friday nite! Rockin the SSC!
TribeV, Aaron played very well, whole team, even the guys on bench, Niko, Negus , Spear and Caleb cheering team on . ONE OHANA!
Go Rainbow Warriors!
😀
Sorry, correction to my above post, 10 or 13 guys scored, and the 3 who did not, still contributed to win, by attitude and battling till end. Stefan great pass to Mike T.
Team, get better, and better, and better, competition will get stiffer, on road and in DHC, then BWC, yet you guys are off to great start, like Fab Five, run and gun and Tom Henderson Artie Wilson, run and gun teams too!
Go Rainbow Warriors.
And if Davis Rozitis, can contribute that agile quick 7 foot point zone, press, trapping wild man, BB crazy 9 pt , 9 rebounds, running the break and great assist, every game that energy for a 7 foot plus 240 lb point Center, wow, UH will be a handful for BWC !
Go Bows!
😀
Eagle and Palolo, I loved the work and competitive spirit of team! They worked really hard off season, and it shows. One concern: To play that hi octane style for whole season, they are going to need at least 10 or 11 solid contributors, the second five with Shamburger out for a rest, Q or Enos running point, have to keep team running smoothly, Hey, it is just first game, and from Open gym, Exhibition game with BYUH till this first win, looks like Gib has team on same page. Sure is different not having a great guy, however reluctant shooter and penetrating PG from last year, and that Vander, the ball get stuck in his hands Offense of last year. Pretty sure, a lot of teams will ZONE Hawaii, so 3 ball shooters get ready, including Standhardinger and Fotu, If those two are hitting 6 three pointers per game between them, when teams jam up the low box, UH will have field day. Pick your poision.
Reality check : Still only first game of season! However GREAT first GAME.
Game On Rainbows!
Go Bows, and win 2 more! for RBC champs!
Uhfanzonly1.
A really impressed old timer UH MBB fan. Very fast and athletic UH team, just wait until Spearman comes back and Quincy’s back is better!
Keeping the opposing team to 55 points is an indicator that we got a tight defense. And when Spearman and Smith is healthy we will really clamp down on teams. That’s what an athletic team can do and what it takes to be a great team.
