Shamburger1_716

The Hawai’i College Basketball Summer League is heading into its stretch run of the season, as there is only one more week of regular-season games before the playoffs begin.

Two more games were completed on Saturday night at Manoa Valley District Park Gym, and once again, players from the University of Hawai’i played key roles.

In the first game of the night, Clark Hatch Fitness increased its winning streak to four with a 95-83 victory over Central Medical Clinic.

UH junior point guard Keith Shamburger had another fine all-around game for Clark Hatch Fitness with 14 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals. Incoming UH freshman forward Michael Thomas added 12 points and three rebounds. Former Chaminade player Leon Ballard led Clark Hatch Fitness with 24 points. UH sophomore Brandon Jawato did not play due to injury.

After losing its first four games of the Summer League, Clark Hatch Fitness is now 4-4 and in a tie for third place.

Former UH forward Bill Amis led Central Medical Clinic with 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He controlled the post with 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots, but it wasn’t enough as Central Medical fell behind early and could never make up the deficit. Central Medical cut a 21-point deficit in the second half down to six (86-80) late in the game, but Clark Hatch Fitness held on in the closing minutes.

Incoming UH sophomore point guard Quincy Smith did not play for Central Medical Clinic due to injury.

In the second game of the night, UH redshirt freshman Aaron Valdes continued to dazzle in the Summer League as he finished with 27 points of 10-16 shooting, 11 rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals to lead Grantco Pacific to a 104-99 win over Wealth Strategy Partners.

Fellow redshirt freshman Caleb Dressler did not play for Grantco Pacific due to injury. Former HPU star Llewellyn Smalley added 25 points for Grantco.

Former UH star forward Julian Sensley led Wealth Strategy with 30 points. Wealth Strategy got as close as thee points (100-97) in the final minute of the game, but Valdes and Smalley each hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory for Grantco.

Summer League games will continue on Tuesday, with two games at Manoa Valley District Park.

  1. Didn’t enjoy yesterday’s first game and left a few minutes prior to end of game. There was an incident on the court, “almost fight” that led to “name calling.” In the stands there was a number of young boys watching the game and sitting behind the bench. What message(s) were they receiving by watching and listening to this? Believe all the players just want to play hard and tough, so why when the calls or no calls go against “you,” why react negatively? At the end of the day, playing sports reflect “real life” and “values,” thus, participation in sports can be valuable. Yesterday, in my opinion begs improvement at ALL levels of participation.

Even though I didn’t enjoy the game thought Keith S played a good game.

  2. Would like to apologize for swearing on the court yesterday. Was immediately embarrassed for doing that due to the close proximity of fans in manoa. Game 1 was very physical and frustrations got the better of me. Sorry to the young fans!

  3. Class & Smarts

Iʻm ʻsureʻ you contain most of it, to the player or ref right next to you…

Good that players are being made aware of fansʻ and kidsʻ proximity…

IF they learn it here (during the summer) should help prevent more embarassing frays when the cameras are rolling…

  4. so much injuries

  5. Worried about the injuries. Hope the guys heal up fast.

Bill Amis, you’re a class act. Very thoughtful of you to post that apology.

  6. Thank you Bill (yes, that really is him … he has posted on this site previously).

I did not attend Saturday’s games, so can’t provide any thoughts or details. From what I have heard, though, there were several individuals involved from both teams.

The words and actions of the players for a moment of frustration on the court can’t be erased from the minds of the young fans. However, this apology certainly is a step in the right direction as to the proper way to handle such matters off the court after an incident.

A very mature and thoughtful response by Bill to make a public apology, which is never an easy thing to do.

  7. MAHALO Bill!

Just to clarify: The concern was more directed at the other team. The biggest people set good examples, mahalo again, for setting a good example,

  8. Been watching a lot of video, open gym, summer league, of Stefan Jovanovich. He seems to have a great understanding of the game(someone else posted similar thoughts). Offense, where to be, how to receive pass, make passes to open cutters, shooters, shoot with either hand, position on rebounds, Defense, pretty good timing on blocked shots.

Every time I watch, him, he appears to be a very skilled young center. Great that UH MBB did offer to Stefan. I believe, he is going to be a good one. Only has to get stronger, a little bigger. Tremendous BBIQ. He and Dressler will be good Bigs for UH, smart ones, for years to come!

Maybe Stefan play this year? He has to show Gib in workouts and practice. RS or active, he will be good addition to team. He is definitely a Team player. Does what a big should. Well coordinated!

Good job Stefan! Keep up the good work!
