Got a question for the coach?

Gib1_Banquet

The youth camps are complete for the month, the 2013-14 schedule is almost complete, and the key recruits have been signed. Still, there are questions to be answered at this time of the year for the Hawai’i basketball team.

If you have a burning question you would like to ask head coach Gib Arnold, please post it in the Comments section below.

We’ll pick a handful of questions in the next day or two and have Coach Arnold answer them in a video interview later in the week.

You may post as many questions as you wish, but only one question per person is eligible to be selected.

  1. Dear Gib,

with one apparent scholarship available do you plan to bring in another student prior to second summer session or do you plan to save it for next year.

  2. Coach Gib,

Will you play more uptempo offensively? Run more.

  3. Coach Gib,

Do you have the athletes to play more full court pressure defense?

  4. Coach Arnold,

With injuries to Jawato and Spearman last year, Will your returnees be 100% healthy to start the 2013-14 season?

    Mahalo.

  5. Coach Arnold,

Any possible walkons to UH MBB team for this coming season? Local, Mainland, or International High School or other college transfers? Michael Harper is a good example!

  6. Coach Arnold

When your dad coached the basketball team at the university, I remembered that during the preseason, he had setup intrasquad scrimmages at various high school gyms throughout Oahu. I remember attending one of the games at Moanalua High School. There was no admission charge and I thought the exposure to the community was priceless.

  7. What are the “Biggest” Player Improvements that we may be able to look forward to this year?
(Newcomer Skills, Returnes changes in Approach, skills, etc.?)

  8. Coach,
How much has your contract situation hurt recruiting. I’m sure players want to know that you’ll be there for the duration of their careers at UH.

  9. Overall, I like what you’ve done with your teams. What has been of concern is the late season performance seen from the teams the past few years. What might that be attributed to? How is this being addressed?

I love the hustle & intensity Standhardinger gives you. It seems he gets back downed because he doesn’t have a lot of weight & is blocked rather often. What is his ideal weight? What area(s) does he need to work on to be a NBA level player?

What are the areas you’ve asked your returners to improve on over the summer? As individuals & as a team.

  10. I enjoyed what Jamie Smith brought to the “party”. What is his status for this coming season?

  11. Here, Here! on Jamie Smith (Call OUT Upper Campus “Failings”- ?Total Dysfunction?)

IF Not Jamie, are there other Real Solutions for Real Student-Fan Continuing Improvement(s) ?

  12. Coach Gib,

Will this year’s team be a good shooting from the 3 point line? Who are the 3 point threats?

  13. Coach Gib,

Will this year’s team be good shooting from the 3 point line? Who are the 3 point threats?

  14. Coach Gib,

Please provide your evaluation of the shooting guard and small forward positions.

  15. 1) Our Defense was rather lackluster last year. Have you put any added emphasis to the players this off season to work on their defensive abilities.

  16. Coach Arnold,

In the future, would being part of a PAC 16 conference be a good fit for MBB?

  17. Coach Arnold,

Are your Point guards and shooting guards good ball handlers? Able to control and close out games, with limited untimely turnovers?

  18. Coach what’s your take on the coming season? Do you feel you’re missing any piece or pieces needed to get the team into the Championship Game of the BW Tourney or just outright leader @ the end of the regular season?

of course almost every coach is not satisfied with the caliber of players on his team but you’ve had 4 years at the helm recruiting your players of choice to come and play @ the University of Hawaii. What’s your take on how much longer is it going to take you/staff/team to be where you want to be @? It seems UHbb has not improved since Coach Wallace got the boot, again, when can we expect to be the leader in the conference? Coach’s have goals and I assume you had a time line of how long it’s going to take your team to get us to the top. There had to be that Goal when you took the job, realistically how much longer do you need to get UHbb there? And if you don’t get there in that time frame… then what?

  19. ^^^ my long winded post above really is a single question. Coach had to have goals to be the top dog in the Conference, is he/staff/team inline time wise of being there?

  20. what percentage of play-calling will your PG enjoys at a close game?

  21. Coach Gib,

With your retunees , plus the 5 additional(so far), recruits: Will this year’s team be able to win BWC regular and tournament titles?

  22. Coach Gib,(apologize for double posts, typo errors!)

With your returnees , plus the 5 additional(so far), recruits: Will this year’s team be able to win BWC regular and tournament titles?

  23. Coach Gib,

This will be the first year under your tenure that you will have a legitimate scoring point guard at the helm, along with team quickness from positions 1-5. Will this allow you to finally tap into your full playbook (offensive and defensive schemes) and how much offense (scoring) do you expect to see from the 1 spot?

  24. Will your shooter (including trey) has to be a designated one regularly or, on your called-plays?

  25. What is the best advice you can give to incoming freshmen that dream of taking their game to the pro-level.

  26. do you think this group will pack the stan sheriff center not just because of wins but the entertainment value?

  27. Coach Arnold,

This is your first DI head coaching job and in what ways would you say your coaching style has changed from your first year here through your last?

  28. Coach Gib,

I love the fact that you made sure the student athletes you have had in MBB from year one, were served discipline, put academics first, and played as a team. With carryover players and a walkon, Miah Ostrowski, that team always won 20 games! Loved the team effort and defense of the guys who listened to you and staff.

Being that said, Question: From year one till your 4th year, how have the student athletes changed, emotionally, academically and socially? Are they truly Ohana , team first players or are the All for One and All for None?
Hopefully , this group of 16 will be great students, athletes, fellow brothers, and represent UH , the MBB program, the coaches and fans and the great 808 Aloha State!

  29. Coach Gib, apologize, had to re-edit the above Question:

    😀 !!

  30. Thanks to all who submitted questions. Gib Arnold had to tend to some personal matters this week, so his “answer” session will be pushed to next week.

  31. SORRY to read (HSA) that the coach & family’s residence got robbed…

    Tough on the kids…

NEED Good Alarm Systems and Better Societal Values…
