Happy New Year 2013

Bench2CSUN

The 2012 portion of the schedule for the Hawai’i basketball team is now complete, and the Warriors are looking for bigger and better things in 2013.

Most notably, the Warriors still have 17 Big West Conference regular season games to come in 2013, and then the conference tournament.

“What am I looking forward to?” junior guard Brandon Spearman said when asked about the upcoming new year. “Winning the Big West Conference and enjoying the Big Dance with my team.”

The Warriors got off to a good start toward that goal with a 74-71 victory over Cal State Northridge in the Big West debut for Hawai’i on December 29. The Warriors will host two more conference games this week – Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and UC Riverside on Saturday.

  1. It’s a cliche to say that a team is close, but the chemistry on this year’s team appears to be genuine. The players enjoy each other’s company, and they all seem like great student-athletes. Kudos to Gib for focusing his recruiting on players with skills and good character. Looking forward to a great year on warriorinsider. Thanks Dayton and sponsors.

  2. Thanks Dayton for all your hard work and I agree the team look very happy together!

  4. Happy New Year to the WI fans and followers!

    Another great video that made me smile! Here’s to a great 2013! Cheers!

  5. Happy New year everyone, hope 2013 will be a good one. Aussie mum, enjoy the rest of your time in Hawaii, hopefully the team will get it done for the next two home games.
    God bless everyone.

  6. Nice video. A happy new year 2013 for Basketball Team. You have 10 weeks, including this weekend, to win that Big West Regular Conference Crown, and then get top seed for Big West Tourney. Do you best guys, and you, the University and fans here, and worldwide will be dancing for the NCAA Dance!

  7. Great video. Happy New Year folks!

  8. It is heart-warnming to see all these young men smiling happily ~ a perfect beginning for the 2013 year.
    It is the final stage of Coach Arnold’s Basketball Season Plan: Make Perfect!

    Fans enjoyed seeing the Isaac’s surprise visit by his family; My secret wish is that his siblings love Hawaii liked he does!
    Fans waiting to see an Aussie Mum & Dad interview video (of course Michael too!).

    We appreciate the Schmidt Family, Dayton & Gang.. making all these possible!

  9. The Tonganator,

    Happy New Year!

    Don’t think I need to tell you how well Isaac is doing with basketball!
    Don’t think you had subscribed to the Print Replica of the Star-Advertiser (eEdition of the Honolulu newspaper).
    Do like to inform you of that Brian McGinnes wrote a wonderful report on Isaac in Tuesday edition, which you might be interested besides.
    Many more of the same will be forth coming. Plus all the BWC games articles..

    Get together with Isaac, I’m sure he will take care of the rest.

  10. Unless UH barfs on itself (and they did vs Northridge) they should sweep this weeks games. Hopefully UH blows out Fullerton to send a statement to the rest of the Big West. Riverside is one of the worst teams in D1 so UH should cruise in that one.

    Next week’s road trip will be the real test of this season. At Irvine and at Long Beach St. Irvine has been very inconsistent this year. They beat UNR, USC and should have beaten UCLA, but have lost to some pretty mediocre teams (Sam Houston St, USM and Pepperdine) and were blown out by Weber St.

    Long Beach isn’t as good as the pre-season polls predicted but they aren’t as bad as their record. They have played a ridiculously tough schedule and now have a couple transfers that are now eligible and the team will look different going forward. Although they played a very tough schedule, they weren’t competitive vs the quality opponents, so it’s hard to get a good gauge on LBSU.

    Should be a fun few weeks.

  11. Tonganator,

    Isaac is also a very charming person as well as a great basketball player – you should be very proud of him on all fronts.

  12. Happy New Year, Manroop Clair. You are 18 now. You are a man! What’s your New Years resolution(s)? Draw more fouls. Drive and penetrate more. Improve ball skills. Whatever it is, I’m rooting for you.

  13. Thanks Aussie Mum and n2o4joy for your kind words about Isaac. We had the game last Saturday on the big screen during our Family reunion here in New Zealand and everyone really enjoyed the game, and espacially when a lot of Isaac’s cousins and uncles plays rugby ( a few times I had to explained the rules). Everyone are really proud of what Isaac achieved so far, and looking forward to watching him for the next 4 years playing for UH and beyond. Would be neat if WI or Fro-duction run a piece on Aussie Mum visiting Hawaii!!!!

    GO THE WARRIORS!!!

  14. ok Game tomorrow night ,Bring all the students back in , it’s been too QUIET , time to get crazy again, Fullerton another good ,quick team, Warriors practicing hundred’s of free throws ,right! Take care of business Warriors and send the Titans back to Orange County with a Sour Face.

  15. Nice forum here WI. Question: Who is Aussie Mum and Dad? Ozi Mum and Tonganator? Family or sponsors?
    Thanks in advance.
    Newbie.

  16. Hi playhoopsa,

    I am Michael Harper’s mum – number 24 on the team. My husband and I are currently visiting Michael in Hawaii and enjoying ourselves immensely.

  17. Hawaii is nice place to be. Enjoy your stay.

  18. These guys always crack me up! Let’s clean things up gentlemen! Still a long season. Love the common goal in winning the Big West and getting to the dance. 11 years is too long especially since AC / Alika and the boys should’ve made it in the late 90’s. Looking forward to the ret of the season. Happy New Year to everyone one.

  19. Hoopsa;
    Aussie Mum introduced herself;
    Ozi Mum is Ozren Pavlovic’s Mum;
    Tonganator is Isaac Fotu’s Dad
    Memphis is Hauns Brereton’s ohana;
    The Tavitas also visit and voice periodically…
