Photos: ‘Ohana Hoopfest

The Upper Classmen prevailed over the Freshmen, 30-21, in the intrasquad scrimmage to highlight the Hawai’i basketball team’s ‘Ohana Hoopfest on Friday night.

The scrimmage was limited to eight minutes of running time, so it was mostly a run-n-gun exhibition. Christian Standhardinger led the Upper Classmen with 10 points.

Earlier in the evening, junior guard Garrett Jefferson won the slam-dunk contest. Freshman Aaron Valdes — who was cleared by the NCAA to officially join the team earlier in the day — placed second.

The Hoopfest served as the introduction of the UH men’s and women’s teams to the public. Both teams performed dance routines to start the festivities.

Here are some photos by WarriorInsider.com photographer Brandon Flores from Friday night’s ‘Ohana Hoopfest.

More details and videos will be posted later on Saturday.

  1. Look forward to your video hilites Dayton, thanks in advance!

    Nice Photos Brandon Flores!

    Looks like, from comments, and articles in media, the guys had intense 3 hr practice earlier in day, and what were they doing primarily, you got it, getting after it on Defense, defensive drills…guys can play outstanding defense from upperclassmen to freshman, will keep them in a lot of ball games, in fact, since they can shoot the ball offensively, their D could actually win close ball games or be able to win by bigger margins hopefully..With Gib, Riley, John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Larry Brown, Coach K., it really starts with D!

  2. dayton…one report was that aaron valdes was given a two week free look to participate with the team while the ncaa continues to scrutinize his transcripts.

    i noticed that you stated that he was cleared.

    does this mean that he is now officially a rainbow warrior?

  3. Offense Wins Games….
    Defense Wins Championships…

    Was glad to get additional glimpses of Aaron Valdes;
    Glad that Coaches/Administration went ‘The Extra Mile’ of getting another NCAA (BM reported 2 Week) Waiver
    so AV and the fans could Practice ‘D’ and Participate in Festivities,,,

    While i’m starting to hear More of a Buzz from the BB Cognoscenti (Youz Guyz, Artie, BC, Jackson, et.al.) the general and fan/student population was smallish, but loud & supportive of both Na Wahine and The Warriors…

    Go Warriors!
    UP The Intensity, UP The ‘D’
    (Sounds like That Message Got Through Yesterday:
    Three Hours of Practice, 2-1/2 Hours of Defense;
    A Bit of What Oahuan was lookin’ for?)
    Fill in The Blanks and The Gaps
    To Become a More Complete Team in the Next Four Weeks and in the course of The Long Season

    Plus Two More Warrior Commits RE: ALL Three still haven’t had and grown through their Senior HS Seasons & Summers … i’m sure Coach is Projecting Improvement “Along a ‘Good Curve'”

    A Good Day
