Nevada stays in first with win over Warriors
Deonte Burton scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half to lead Nevada to an 88-79 victory over the Hawai’i basketball team on Thursday night.
A “Blackout” crowd of 6,893 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Wolf Pack rally from a three-point halftime deficit to remain in first place in the Western Athletic Conference.
Nevada is 20-4 overall and 9-1 in the WAC, including two wins over the Warriors. Hawai’i dropped to 13-10 overall and into fourth place in the conference at 5-4.
Nevada dominated the boards from start to finish, and then went 8 of 12 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes to seal the victory.
Joston Thomas led the Warriors with 18 points. Hauns Brereton added 17, and Miah Ostrowski scored a season-high 15 to go along with eight assists. Vander Joaquim contributed 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Wolf Pack led by as many as nine points early in the first half, but the Warriors rallied to take a 39-36 lead at intermission.
The Warriors got a huge momentum boost going into the locker room at intermission after Joaquim led a fastbreak and dished to Thomas for a slam dunk just before the horn sounded to end the half.
Hawai’i held the halftime lead despite getting out-rebounded 23-9 in the first half. The Wolf Pack finished the game with a 46-27 advantage on the boards.
The Wolf Pack used the rebounding advantage to storm back in the second half and take a 68-59 lead after Jerry Evans Jr. drained a 3-pointer with 9:44 remaining.
The Warriors got as close as 71-67 with 5:38 remaining, but Nevada then went on an 8-0 surge to take control for good. Burton and Malik Story hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark the surge.
The Warriors will remain at home for another WAC game on Saturday, when they host Fresno State. The Bulldogs lost at San Jose State, 79-71 in double-overtime on Thursday. Fresno State is 11-15 overall and in seventh place in the conference at 3-7.

Failure in effort by Vander and Josten on the boards, gib got outcoached too, back to the drawing board..
I think Gib was a bit too emotional in his comments after the game. I do not think the team was an embarrassment and I do think they played hard. They beat us bad under the baskets, and Zane seems to be lacking his swag on offense, as he had several open shots that he chose not to take.
A ‘pack attack in the house tonite. Talk about getting out muscled on the boards…..tonite was it, man. 🙁
Zane = No Show!!! Honey badger nickname is a joke!
Trevor M.I.A influence team..they were coming together…Then…
I think , what Trevor did was wrong., not listening to coach, however, Joston went in out, of games when Gib told him too, so did Shaq, even when Gib had Salter, Coleman and Barnes , they had gripes , but don’t air it out on the court. The State of Hawaii is giving you a free ride Tre, your mom wants you to get a degree. You could get stronger, more focused, more basketball savvy and playing overseas ball for six figures for years to come., Just ask Phil Martin..
Tre, the team, your coach, the fans, your mom you owe it to man up. At least finisth school, and transfer to a division II prI II school…maybe warrior insider will have an interview away from the University and you can give your side of story…yet even if the team lost to Nevada, your hustle could of evened out some of the hustle plays, though you are not a good fundamental box out boarder. You seem like a nice kid with a great mom who cares about you.
Hey swallow your pride, maybe come back next year, you might have screwed the chemistry of the team. Even if you were not starting and your minutes were going down,,hey you can be a beast on Scout…bring super intensity like Christian, Jace , Pii etc. Tyler Brown bangs in practice..
Trevor grow up , man up, we will wait for the truth to come out, if it is grades, and insubordination, many you are on death row…if not be an adult….Cali is watching you…are you a quitter, or a supportive sitter, and ready willing and able to help team in anyway possible…maybe in SanJo you wanted to show your homies what you got..
He Tre…it is the TEAM, the University of Hawaii Team not Cali pac west.
I only say this, because , when you first came on board last year, maybe Gob’s 1st pr 2md recriuit, your were all hustle and we appreciated that..Don’t give up, make amends, maybe it is Gib too ..make peace and play ball get your degree whereever you end up.
WE COULD HAVE USE THE OLD TREVOR WISEMAN, BIG TIME…MAYBE WE WOULD HAVE HAD 6 OR 7 MORE DEFENSIVE BOARDS, COULD HAVE BEEN A WIN FOR THE WARRIORS.
THINIK ABOUT IT TRE…ALL THE GAL FANS LIKE YOU, BUT THAT IS MOOT…THINK OF THE STATE OF HAWAII PROVIDING A FREE SCHOLARSHIP RIDE AND YOUR MOM…
