Warriors score overtime road win at Fresno State

Tri-captains Zane Johnson, Vander Joaquim and Miah Ostrowski led the Hawaii basketball team to a 74-68 overtime road victory over Fresno State on Thursday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

Johnson scored 24 points, including six 3-pointers; Joaquim dominated the post with 23 points and 16 rebounds; Ostrowski did not score but dished out a career-high 11 assists.

Hawaii improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Fresno State dropped to 7-11 and 0-3.

The Warriors out-scored the Bulldogs 16-10 in the overtime. Joaquim scored 10 of Hawaii’s points in the five-minute extra period.

Each team scored twice in a frantic final minute of regulation to force the overtime. Fresno State took its first lead of the second half when Jerry Brown hit a jumper from the wing to give the Bulldogs a 55-54 advantage with 43.3 seconds left.

After a dunk by Joaquim put Hawaii back in front at 56-55, Fresno State’s Steven Shepp drained a long 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 58-56 with 14.5 seconds remaining. Joaquim’s hook shot from close range with 5 seconds remaining sent it to overtime.

The Warriors appeared to be in control early, racing to a 16-3 lead at the start of the game. Johnson drained his first four shots of the game, including two 3-pointers to spark the opening surge.

Fresno State responded with an 11-2 run that cut the Hawaii lead to 18-14. Kevin Olekaibe scored all 11 points for the Bulldogs during that surge.

Hawaii eventually took a 32-23 lead at intermission, with Johnson scoring 15 points in the first half.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 10-1 run to tie the score at 33, and the game stayed close the rest of the way.

The Warriors will stay on the road for another WAC game on Saturday. They are scheduled to depart for Reno, Nev., early Friday morning, and will play at Nevada on Saturday evening.

WAY TO Go When it Matters, Warriors !
Vander playing like a Champion makes key shots down the stretch to Earn the Overtime and with Zane lead the 7-0 O.T. start, Then Hits Free-Throws to open/maintain the Lead … Playing like a Champion …

    Hawai’i doesn’t win very often @ Save-Mart …

Fresno fought back hitting threes to Challenge in Regulation and Overtime …

But Hawai’i holds up its end for an (Ugly) Road Win… A Conference Road Win …

GO Get Another This Week, Warriors ! First Win @ Reno Coming Up !?

You CAN (and probably Need to) ratchet it up another level or two !

  6. A win is a win is a win!! Awesome! Keep it up Bows!
