Warriors hold off Spartans, 82-69, to open WAC

Joston Thomas scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Vander Joaquim added 20 points and 14 boards tonight as Hawai’i held off San Jose State, 82-69, to open its 33rd and final Western Athletic Conference season.

The Warriors led from wire-to-wire, going up by as 38-23 late in the first half and 51-31 two minutes into the second.

The Spartans woke up with an 18-4 run that closed it to 55-49 after Calvin Douglas’ 3-pointer with 14:57 remaining, but that was as close as they would get as UH pushed the lead back up to 13 several times, including at the end on Thomas’ slam dunk with five seconds left.

Wil Carter led San Jose State with a career-high 21 points and 20 rebounds.

  1. Joston Thomas for WAC POW!!

  2. Nice job. Some rough spots, but they held Shamburger and Kinney in check. Way to go Warriors!

  3. Hawaii09 can go suck an egg now, Warriors win, and Shlumburga sucked and sulked his ass all the way to da bench.

  4. Why continue to waste time on Hawaii09? Obviously trying to push buttons.. UH won. We should just celebrate and hope it continues..

  5. the word on the street was that shamburger wanted to leave sjsu prior to the season but somehow he didn’t pull the trigger on that.

warriors played well for most of the game. the new 1-2 punch will have all teams concerned. now if only zane, hauns, and shaq can be just a tad more consistent from outside. and if miah ever gets his mid to long ranch shot in order………….
